Sam Hurd.... (1 Viewer)

This was posted on yahoo.

Sep 18 Dallas Cowboys WR Sam Hurd could replace WR Terrell Owens (finger) in the lineup. Hurd plays the same spot as Owens and excelled in training camp this season. WR Patrick Crayton's experience could lead to him holding the job at first which would allow Hurd to be eased into the mix."

Would Hurd really get the nod over Crayton? Anyone know anything about this guy? He worth anything at this point?

He might be worth stashing. There were wide reports about him being Owens's "protege" of sorts in camp and he showed some flash in the preseason. I would imagine that Parcells, though, will likely lean toward Crayton (more experience) as the Z and let Hurd work his way into his big boy pants as the slot receiver.

I also wouldn't be shocked to see less 3-WR sets and more 2-TE sets where Witten/Fasano line up in the slot.

Brake, can't help but think "did you read what you posted"?

With Dallas having a bye week, chances are that Owens misses no more than one game, with an outside shot that he misses none. Parcells tends to lean to guys he trusts at some level in these siutations, so I would bet on Crayton seeing the most action although Hurd would see the field. In a redraft unless I was desparate I would not act on this situation.

As a Cowboy homer, I have already posted that Hurd would play IF T.O can't go.

Crayton is not familiar with the position. Parcells said so in his PC yesterday. Feel free to search for my recap of the PC.

I guess I'm crabby this morning, sorry Brake.See to me, you missed the word "could" and that Crayton's experience "could" lead to him holding the job at first. TO is out 2-4 weeks with one being a bye IIRC. That leaves Hurd with very little time to beat out Crayton. It is possible he won't have to and in Parcells' mind he did in camp. Banker guy posted Parcells press conference here yesterday which if you read with the notion that Parcells is a crafty speaker, it's a very good read.Crayton is very much a hot and cold WR. In the past Parcells has been unhappy with how he returned last year to be "cold" and seemed to lose all progress he made earlier in the year. Hurd has been the darling of camp for the Boys. Parcells is all over this guy with praise. The Boys also have 2 other rookie WRs but I don't believe they've been active lately.Parcells has spoken about using the two TE set alot this summer. IMO his initial reaction to TO being hurt was to use that so that would increase Fasano's stats for FF. I'm sure Parcells wants to see what his rook WR, Hurd, can do. IMO It's Crayton's job unless either one stinks, Parcells often leans toward veterans. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this this week, as most will.Keep in mind this is not a replacement for a long time

Agreed. Glenn will be the go-to guy like last year.

:goodposting: The one game TO will miss will be the Titans, so I would expect to see a healthy dose of Julius and MBIII. In a redraft, unless you are in dire straits I don't think it would be worth picking up a guy for one week.

Agreed.

Cowboys coach Bill Parcells told the media Wednesday that WR Patrick Crayton would not start in Terrell Owens' place at Tennessee in Week 4. "It won't be Crayton," Parcells replied when asked about if Crayton would take Owens' spot in the lineup. Parcells said he would rather go with one of his younger players, presumably either Jamaica Rector or Sam Hurd.

This leads me to believe that BSH will be starting on Sunday (week 4).

Can anyone else verify the starting WR,

if Hurd breaks out, then he will be a nice buy and hold

for dynasty leagues.

Good news for Hurd. With the bye, Parcells had time to get Crayton back into playing that role if he wanted to. Pretty sure Bankerguy called this right, kudos to him.

I'll still wonder about the two TE offense and about Crayton getting some time

I've got to think Hurd has the advantage over Crayton and Rector at this point.

My update:

I am of the opinion that T.O. likely plays against Tennesse (80% chance).

*IF* T.O. does not play the line up will look like this.......

Base Offense

Hurd**********Witten****************Fasano*********Glenn

3 WR Sets

Hurd**********Witten******************Crayton (Slot)****Glenn

I believe some people are taking my comment of Hurd in for T.O. meaning Crayton won't play. I hope my crude diagram explains better what is likely to happen.

Recent interview with BP.

"Once you put the plate in there's no risk of it being displaced again," Parcells said. "So now it's a question of when you can withstand that trauma or pain of catching the ball. Once he can do that, he'll be good to go. So we'll just see how quickly that comes along."

Parcells seems to be leaning toward undrafted rookie Sam Hurd taking Owens' place, if T.O. can't go. Parcells would prefer to plug one person into Owens' split end job rather than move Terry Glenn or Patrick Crayton, then have to use someone else in their place.

"I'm not going to screw up two positions," Parcells said.

I don't think we're disagreeing here

I think we've collectively gotten very close.

1) TO might not miss any games. Its up to him whether he can stand the pain.

2) Crayton will not be moved into TO's spot. He backs up Glenn in the base offense, and he plays the slot position in 3 wide. According to Parcells, he does know how to play TO's spot, but as bankerguy quoted, Parcells is "not going to screw up 2 positions".

3) Parcells was very evasive on who would play in TO's spot if he could not go. Hurd is a likely choice. But don't count out Rector or Austin. Parcells has pulled enough surprises that none of the three young guys would surprise me.

So the bottom line is that TO has a reasonable chance of not missing any games. And if he does, its unclear which of the three youngsters would fill in for him. The only thing definitive is that Crayton won't.

I can't believe people are giving consideration to any fantasy value of a slight possibility of one start from a player who's never played in a regular season game.

Could Sam have a decent day if he gets the start ? Yes. He showed enough preseason talent to make the team over Terrance Copper.

Should you pick up Hurd?? Absolutely not! A waste of a roster spot, who might not get any starts.

I also totally agree with Bankerguy that when Parcells says that he doesn't want to mess up two spots, that means Crayton's and Glenn's roles remain the same. This does not however equate to Hurd becoming TO people.

I'll be a bit surprised if TO misses the Tennessee game. But I can't see him missing the next game in Philly whatsoever because of some pain in his hand. That's very unlikely to happen.

I'd say welcome to the shark pool, but you're member number 288 - how would this be surprising to you at this stage of the shark pool's life? :hophead:

Heh. You have a good point, as I've long noticed you usually do. I guess just two weeks in from a nice vacation away from FBG during the off-season this year, I was anxious to let someone know to don't overreact, make a stupid move and fall for the bait here. On this similar topic of SP influence, this latest experiment of mine not letting the SP have any possible influence on my drafts this year has actually been fairly successful so far. (4-2 overall) Enough about me. I just wanted to point out why I was absent from the off-season here this year if case anyone actually noticed. Now that my drafts are decided, it's nice to dip back into the pool again. Sometimes.

Ahhh vacation, that explains it. I should take me one of those, sounds kinda nice.Your message (unfortunately) is well reiterated as there seems to be an actual increase in seeming panic mode posts and decisions on the boards every year.So - welcome back!

That depends on which format you are playin'. Redraft? Don't worry about it less you see TO's hand fall off. Dynasty? Different story. Hurd is showin' the right stuff for being a pretty good WR in a couple of years. A regular start (even as fill-in) is very good thing for his development.

It seems to me that if everything T.O. and his publicist said is true- then he was so sore from Tuesday's practice that he needed a couple of pain pills, and then accidentally or not, a couple more later. Since 10/8 is such a big deal to him, and TEN supposedly an easy team, his hand throbbing, T.O. sits this one out? The guy has been doing 10 reps, then 8 reps- He wants to play October 8 against McNabb and Reid.

It seems unlikely to me that T.O. could imagine a world without him smack dab in the center of it.

This is not a WDIS, I'm starting him. I picked up Hurd this morning (post-suicide, pre- just groggy), I have 3 receivers that are not on bye in a start 3 league- and Hurd is one of them. Luckily it is an early game so I can make a move if T.O. is going to play.

Anyone else going to roll the dice with Hurd? IF he plays, and IF he starts, he should see single coverage, but will probably be Bledsoe's second or third option on most plays.
