Samsung Galaxy S3 Discussion Thread (1 Viewer)

I consider myself fairly tech-savvy but these last few posts have me :shuked:

I love my S3 and the default OS it came with seems fine. I mostly play time killing games, listen to spotify, and browse the web on it. Would rooting my phone and installing jellybeans or whatever be worth my time?
Not if you are happy with your device right now. If you are curious, I would suggest just reading this forum: My link

For a while, then decide if you want to dive into flashing and rooting. Bear in mind, this is for my carrier on Verizon. They have the other carriers on that site as well.
Thanks! Will check it out.

I rooted and unlocked my GS3 and installed the Jelly Beans ROM of XDA. I love it. It has BEATS audio and all kinds of good stuff. But...I STILL HATE ANDROID TRANSFER, KIES, AIRDROID... ETC.I know Sammy and Apple hate each other, but even in Linux this device in a PITA to sync. I tried to move files in VM Ware with XP, but I still have to tweak those settings out to recognize the USB. Fragmentation is a #####.
You can get Beats on the S3? That would be great. The sound sucks on this thing.
Jelly Beans ROM has it. They also have another DSP on it called MusicFX, but I dunno if that's a DEV thing or a Google Play app. This things flies with the ROM. I tried 2 others out, like CleanRom which I can still flash to via GooManager, but this ROM has been stable as a rock so far, with good battery life. I don't regret flashing to ROMs now. I was holding out, but with Verizon holding this device back, I said screw it. Best thing about Root is that I can use Root apps like DroidWall.
Looks like you just needed to wait like 1 more day, pretty sure Verizon has now rolled out the official release (at least, everyone that has one at work that I know now has JB.) Not saying there's anything wrong with flashing ROM's or anything like that, and no love for Verizon, but it is definitely out and available at this point. I haven't rooted my HTC One X, and it is supposed to get JB in early January. Hard to resist the temptation, but they didn't actually crack the bootloader until recently so the ROMs for that are still a little rough I believe.
One of the reasons why I rooted and unlocked it was because I wasn't sure if the new VW update would have made the bootloader tougher to unlock, and then I would have to wait for the Devs to find a new hack. 4.2 already is being leaked, and who knows when VW gets their stuff together for that update. I've been rooting my old Android device for years, and it still works great with the limited hardware with the ROMs that are out for it. XDA Devs are the best. I was scared at first customizing my GS3, but it's easier than I thought. I got a full backup, use a great new recovery that makes it a lot easier than CWM, and have loads of ROMs to flash. Even if I bork it, I can still Odin back to stock.
Makes sense. I may still be Rooting my HTC One X, but wanted to check out the stock version first (if it ever comes out, sigh....)

Just got the Samsung Note 2. Love the look and size. I have rooted the phone already, but haven't a clue where to go next. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good website for rooted android phones. Also, any must have apps?

Does the rooted phone work anything like the old iphone, whereas you could jailbreak the iphone and get free apps. Thanks.

http://www.xda-developers.com/XDA, specifically the forums for your phone, are probably the first place to go.

Anyone found a nice cover for the Note 2? I have had otter box in the past, and will go with that unless someone can recommend something else. Thanks.

Why did You root it? It already has Jellybean. Just wonderIng if I Should Consider it. The only benefit I see is getting rid of the annoying bloatware VZ and Sammy put on the phone.

Can you put 4Share apps/4Share music and such on the phone without a root? I am asking because I also had an iphone forever and used a jailbreak to get apps/music.

Today was the day I could junk my BB Torch and I got a Galaxy S III.

Really like it like 10000000x better so far.

One thing I need help on...

On my BB, when I rec'd an e-mail, I was given the option of deleting the e-mail (I use gmail) either just off my BB (it would then later load on my laptop) or delete the e-mail off my BB and GMAIL (and it would not wind up in my laptop inbox)

Is there a feature like that on SIII? Just gave a brief glance and can't find it...

Anyone had difficulty getting your laptop to recognize the phone? Any time I plug it into the USB port, it says does not recognize device

If it's a Mac, you're kinda SOL. Android Transfer, the application for Mac's, is buggy and never works. Linux itself has a hard time recognizing the full file path and structure. In Windows, it should come up for both the camera and storage. Just set the device to media or MTP when you plug it in. I have USB Debugging set (in the Developer menu in Settings), but I don't think that is necessary. Samsung did something weird and did away with the "Mass Storage" option in the newer devices, I think because it reads the device storage (not the external storage) as SDCard. The external storage will read "External SDCard". In Windows, it's 'phone' and 'card' respectively.ETA: make sure you have the Samsung drivers. Just do a Google search for them.

Do you use the Gmail app? It used to have a setting where you could delete form the server as well as the app. I don't see it on the latest version though. K9 mail, which is a great app and free, might have that option.

I rooted my GS3 because you can use root apps such as Droidwall, AdAway, and Titanium Backup. They only work with rooted devices.

yes on GMail app. There is no option to delete from server and app. Also, don't know how to get rid of "conversations". Have never used or wanted to use e-mail that way. Any ideas? TIA

What I have found out is that the GMAIL app "is" all of my Gmail e-mail, and not just downloaded to a device and then processed like on the BB.

Try K9 mail. I like it better than the native Email app in Android.

Wow... Just downloaded ISyncr app to transfer my I tunes to the phone and it worked perfectly via wireless.

Is there a better music player than the one on the phone? I like to "random" my tunes when I listen and I can't see where to do that on the music player that came with the phone.

Had not used Google Play for music til now as I got a $50 gift card and bought some songs.

Is there a way to get the songs fully downloaded on my phone and not just available to stream?

Wanted to listen to some stuff while at my in-laws over the holidays and network signal is not the greatest in a few places in their house (and with 15 people in the house including 5-6 laptops, 5-6 phones, and 3 iPads, the wifi was overloaded)...so many times I could not listen to what I had...but could not find that music actually on my phone.

Yes. Click on the album/song you want and then under the title there is a faded little pin that you can click. Clicking that will store the album/songs on your phone.

Knew there had to be a way...just had not fooled with it yet.Thanks.

Does anyone else have any issues using Skype from this phone? I'm on Verizon and when I Skype, I can see the other person but they can't see me. Yes I have the 'video on' button clicked (but doesn't register) and have uninstalled and reinstalled to see if that helped (didn't). TIA

As of right now, Verizon doesn't support Skype video on this phone.ETA This was an issue with ICS, Jellybean may have fixed this issue.

Anyone else using Google Voice? I started using it on Sprint about 1.5 years ago so my contacts started seeing my GV number. When I got my Note2 on VZ I just got a new number and transitioned my GV number. I only give out the GV one now. I like the email like features GV offers and VM transcriptions are great. Another cool feature is spamming out numbers. The only downside I see is no picture text which is fine with me. People should use email for pics anyways.

couldn't find any case I liked, so I just ordered this one. Not as big and tank-like as the other otterboxes, has rubber on the outside, and has a PC skeleton with internal silicone bumpers. Will report back how I like it.
case finally came in...damn UPS and their ground shipping, taking forever.Anyways, it's nice. Feels robust. Silicone part is a little stiffer than I was expecting. It's tacky enough that it won't slide all over my dashboard, and smooth enough to fit easily into my pocket. It is a few millimeters thinner than my wife's full-scale Otterbox, which is nice, but not appreciably different in the width.

I feel like this is adequate protection, I'm pleased. Still think it's terribly expensive, but most of these things are.

I went for this case instead...VERY MANLY.More colors.

Even got Hot Pink if you want it.
