Samsung Galaxy S3 Discussion Thread (1 Viewer)

I don't understand why anyone still group texts. Just have everyone download Whatsapp and be completely platform agnostic.

Maybe in gamer IT nerd circles you can (or even want to) do this... but why the hell would I want to go through the hassle of trying to convince everyone I know to download an app to add a functionality that already exists on my phone? What's App is a decent app... I've used it. But I prefer the built in messaging feature of iOS

Oh, also, the same wife has a Speck case that has done well for about a year but is now starting to chip and crack. What is the consensus FBG-recommended case to provide some protection while still allowing the phone to be slim enough to slide in and out of a pocket or purse easily?
Got one of these. Easy to put on, stays snug, buttons all work, not overly bulky (i.e. less bulky than Otterbox), but still feels solid.

Whatever you do, do NOT get an Otterbox Commuter series case. For some reason, I could never get my case to work with the volume rocker, and putting it on and taking it off was a pain in the ###.
I've got an otterbox and I love it. After about a week the side buttons wore in and got a lot easier to use. They were pretty tight at the beginning.

Was just coming here to recommend the same. I typically hate cases but as my first S3 exploded from a small less-than-waist-high drop, I finally caved. I got one of the UAG and it hasn't hindered my enjoyment of the phone much. I've since dropped it several times from waist height without so much as a scratch.

I got the white one and it looks good on my white phone as well.
Went with the "Aero" one since I thought it'd look good with my pebble blue S3. I was right.
My ACase has served me well, but the dual layer corners can make it a pain to get out of my pocket sometimes. I'm interested in this one. Does the UAG case affect NFC at all?

OK...I don't know what world you live in, but everybody I know uses Whatsapp, whether or not they are on iOS, BBM, Android, or whatever. I don't know a single person that still uses iOS group messaging. And I'm not sure what you mean by the gamer IT nerd thing.

That being said, I live in Canada so 1. Rogers (our VZ equivalent) still doesn't offer unlimited txt, so its much cheaper to use Whatsapp; and 2. Everyone was using BBM as recently as 2 years ago and many still have blackberry's, so the switch to Whatsapp was pretty natural .

Anyone else have a problem getting texts and pictures from Iphone users on your S3? Weird?
Yes, I have an iPhone 4s from work and my wife has the GS3. She usually gets my texts without issue, but getting the pictures is a rarity. Like maybe 25% of the time or less does the picture come through.
Texts make it through to my buddies S3 but group texts rarely do, and my pictures never do. Not sure what's up but for S3 users to be unable to receive picture texts from iPhone users is a pretty big problem. Doesn't seem universal but it's commonplace enough to be an issue.
Even when a photo does come through from an iPhone user I get it as a "slideshow" (even if it's only a single picture) which shows up small on the screen, won't zoom/auto-rotate, can't be saved/exported, etc.

This, combined with the lack of true group texting on android, are the biggest head-scratchers about an otherwise awesome phone/OS.
I get the slideshow thing but have no issues saving them to the disk and blowing them up. No problems with group texts either. I hate group texts though.
:goodposting:

Exact same experience here. Can receive them, save them, and then can zoom in. Get group texts as well, but they are the suck.

What app are you using for your texts? I had this issue with GoSMS but not with the native messaging. I've since got rid of the secondary app and just use the main one.

We're on T-Mobile and my wife is picking up an iPhone 5 on Friday. I told her that just about everyone I've heard from who had an iPhone and now use a GS3 likes it more. But she won't listen.

I'm inheriting her GS3 so I'm pretty stoked (currently on a Galaxy S)...and I already told her no backsies.

I know many people that left GS3 to iPhone and never looked back. All preference.

Sorry for the jacked up post. My phone got possessed for a sec. Basically, the only thing I hate on the GS3 is the battery. Considering getting the battery pack that doubles as a back of the phone. Yes the phone will be double the size, but it might actually last me past 2 p.m. on any given day.

The battery life on the Note 2 is insane. Charges 0 to 100 in barely over 2 hours and I'm getting 2 days out of a charge (I am, however, a fairly light user.) I took it off the charger this morning at 7 AM and I won't put it back on until I go to bed around 11 PM tomorrow night, and I'll probably still have anywhere from 8-15% battery left even after 36 hours.

I'm an S2 user but I bought an extra battery/charger combo from eBay for like $12, so if I'm gonna be gone all day I take the charged spare with me. From low battery to 100% in 30 seconds.

No you don't.

Got it today. Pretty cool so far. Definitely think I'll like it better than my iphone.

Any way to delete blank pages?

So it looks like the reviews are starting to come in for the S4. Overall opinion seems to be that the new features being advertised are a bit clunky in how they work. I wasn't planning to upgrade for those anyway, could care less, and would do it for the overall better performance of the phone....so I'll likely be pre-ordering.

Posted this in the Ting thread, but might as well mention it here. Slight change: It won't be available until after May 15th.

I'm going to be selling my Sprint Galaxy SIII after I'll basically be forced to switch to Verizon for a new job. I paid $350 for it used.

I'll sell it for $300 shipped with screen protector attached, a Urban Armor Gear case AND an Otterbox Defender case (which is a ##### to get on and I could never get the volume to work right with it on, but if you swear by it...). Only catch is you have to wait until May 9th for me to ship it, which is when my billing cycle ends. Sprint won't turn my phone off early.
Note: It's selling for about $300 on ebay, but without the protector and the cases and I'm including shipping. It's through Sprint, FYI.

Borked the phone with the latest modem, had to unbrick it being that I use ROMs, flashed it back to stock, did a full wipe, and updated via OTA. The image I used already rooted it. After a couple of hours...

The OTA has multi window! BTW, anybody who has a rooted phone try PIE control. They have it on Play Store (you might not have to be rooted, as I have the LMK apk). It's an awesome home key launcher.

So for the last few days, my S3 has been barely charging. I leave it overnight and wake up to either a full battery or only at 40% or something in between. I plug it in, and the battery actually goes down while still connected. I pull up the battery menu, and it says charging, but the battery keeps going down. Any ideas?

Buy a new OEM battery on eBay for less than $10 shipped.

Don't know if it's the battery. I tried another battery and it's the same thing. I tried three different chargers. I'm afraid it's the charging port.

Have you cleaned it? They tend to pick up lots of pocket lent and stuff. My Evo and iPhone both has issues with poor charging and a quick blast of compressed air fixed it.

Both my battery and internet connection have fallen off a cliff the last few days. Can't load Play Store or Pandora right now.

Is Verizon throttling 4G now? I find it hard to imagine it is a coincidence since I used about half a gig over the weekend between Pandora and tethering...

Yeah, my battery has been awful lately as well. I was getting only about 8 hours on a charge last week. It's gotten better since then. Its showing "Cell standby" and "Device idle" as the main culprits. Dropping calls a lot as well.

Battery life has been sucking for me as well (on Sprint). Unless I don't touch the thing, there is no chance of lasting the day on a single charge. Unplugged it at 7 am this morning, and I'm sitting at 51% currently. All I've done is periodic email.

Man, this thing just lost 4% in ten minutes of being off the charger without being able to connect to the internet....

4G/LTE destroys bettery life. Use wifi when possible

Check what is syncing. Sync also crushes battery life, and for 90% of things, sync can be turned off

If youre in an area of weak connection/in a dense office building, and your phone keeps switching frequencies or cant find a signal this also drains the battery

I usually get down to anywhere from 10-30% left at the end of the day w pretty heavy use, including my screen being on for 2-2.5hrs a day

Turn down screen brightness as well. Mine is almost down all the way and is still bright as hell

Battery fix?

I'm not rooted but I'm considering doing this.
I'm rooted and unlocked, and I use custom kernels all the time. I use TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) for recovery instead of Clockwork Mod (which I used to use) because it has a nice easy GUI with a lot of options. Rooting it may or may not void your warranty, but unlocking the bootloader for sure will. I rooted mine 2 months after the purchase and still kept the stock ROM. Then after waiting for weeks for Verizon for Jelly Bean, I unlocked it and installed a custom Jelly Bean ROM.

My current setup has RootBox ROM, and Lean Kernel. RootBox is an AOKP based ROM, meaning that it doesn't have the TouchWiz framework (or whatever they call it). It's more a pure Android stock environment, and RootBox combines CyanogenMod, AOKP (Android Open Kang Project), and ParanoidAndroid. I use Lean Kernel because it's simpler to set up than KToonz's kernel, where I can change the voltages and such. I really haven't gone into tweaking for wakelocks and such yet, but the custom kernels are great for battery life. Most ROM devs tweak the stock kernel for optimization if you want the stock kernel, and have better battery life than what the device comes shipped. ROM's also de-bloat the device, yet some give you options to keep some of the stock apps like KIES if you want them.

Greenify is a nice app to help 'hibernate' apps that try to run in the background. but you have to have root in order to use it. If you have apps that have ads, you can use AdAway with root as well. If you want the stock experience with the TouchWiz and Samsung optimizations, CleanRom is one of the best out there. That ROM has great battery life. Bear in mind, the kernels need to settle in for a few days to get a true barometer of battery life. I've gone well over 30 hours without a charge and still had 50% with medium to regular use.

Even if I had a Google Play GS4, I would root it and slap a ROM on it.

Yeah, I'm at around 30% on my screen brightness, and toggle sync off during certain hours, like when I'm on the computer. Of course I am plugged in then, but I can also set what wakes the device up as far as sync with the ROM.

Yeah I'm not too impressed with battery life (I've had my S3 for a couple of weeks). Thinking about getting that case with the built in backup battery (I forget the name).

I'm not too comfy installing ROMs, every time I go to xda I get confused by all the kernal/ROM talk. There's always a hundred different opinions on which kernals to run with which ROMs, and the tech terms make my head want to explode. Then factor in the CWM/TWRP debate and you can color me lost.

I don't get the widespread Touchwiz hate, the UI is slick and it works fine for me. Sure I could probably free up space by eliminating bloatware, but I just throw all the carrier loaded app icons in a junk folder and forget about them, and I have a 16GB SD card so I've got plenty if space for media, etc. I'm sure the device would also run a bit faster with tweaks, but for a device that fits in my pocket, its plenty fast enough.

Doing the ROM stuff after a while ain't that hard. I've been doing it since I've had an Android device. The downside is trouble shooting and working around bugs. Of course you run the risk of bricking the device (which I have), and then need to know how to recover via software on the computer, and connecting the device in "download" mode. The other downside for me is getting hooked on ROMs. I've flashed and re-flashed ROMs to find the perfect setup.

I use Nova Launcher on every build, and the thing I hated about TW was having to find the code for the "hidden menu" to turn off WiFi power save, which I mentioned earlier in this thread.

Tip: For those who want a quicker response, just go to Developer Options and scale the window animations down to .5. Makes the device seem a lot more responsive.

One thing that helps with the AMOLED screens and battery life is to use dark or black wallpaper. Any app that I use that has the option of a dark theme I always switch to, and use a few "blacked out" apps via developers, like the calendar. I also use less home screens with not very many widgets, or even none at all with just one home screen due to launchers and apps like PIE control. My current setup is with just one home screen with black wallpaper, several dock icons, PIE, a row of app icons that I use the most, and a few folders of apps. The notification drawer is what I use to control media apps, and I just use alerts for apps to push things like scores and such. Live wallpaper is a waste of resources, and I haven't found a widget other than a clock with weather useful enough to add on any screen.

Drummer, which rom you using now? Have you tried the Wicked Sensations yet? I'm using Wicked 4.2 and love it.
