San Diego moving to Los Angeles in 2012? (1 Viewer)

(KFFL) Provided that groundwork is done to build a new downtown events center in the next year, the San Diego Chargers are likely to announce shortly after Feb. 1, 2012, that the team will move to Los Angeles for the start of the 2012 season, according to T.J. Simers, of the Los Angeles Times. The Chargers probably will announce soon they will not be exercising their Feb. 1-May 1 escape clause from their stadium lease next year because they really have nowhere to go. The city of San Diego's last shot, and probably its only chance to keep the team, rests on a November 2012 ballot measure that probably will never materialize. City officials and the Chargers would have to agree on the language for such a ballot measure sometime during 2011 and probably no later than early 2012. If they could find common ground, such a measure authorizing the spending of public money on a new stadium would need strong political backing. Most observers believe politicians will not show suc h support, instead leaving it up to voters. If local politicians don't line up strongly behind such a ballot measure, there would be little incentive for the Chargers to spend money on campaigning for such a losing measure.

I really hope there is nothing to this story. I hope the Jacksonville Jags beat the Bolts to LA. I can't imagine the NFL without the San Diego Chargers.

Not surprised that the bolts would move north. I think there will be many people in the league (Al Davis, Owner of the Jags) that want a piece of the LA pie

It says Oakland in the thread title but talks of LA, is there an underlying message I'm missing? :lmao:

Oh nm its fixed now. SD to LA not as shocking.

Did you watch the game? It was like watching the Raiders' home game. SD residents are smart enough to know the Chargers management sucks ###.

Don't assume LA would only want one franchise. LA may want two teams to share a facility similar to what the Giants/Jets do.

I will assume one team and one team only. I still have my reservations about the ability of Los Angeles to support one team, never mind two.

This is only slightly less likely than me walking on planet Mars tomorrow.
I think they mean having the groundwork/plan done, not the whole stadium. A teardown of the convention center next to Staples to build a domed stadium capable of hosting football has been in discussions for a month or so. I think the note is referring to that plan getting approved in 2011 being what it would take to lock the Chargers in. They'd play in another location while the new stadium was being constructed.

Domed? What on earth for?

I got all that. There's still public money involved in the form of bonds. They swung it for L.A. live, so maybe they can do it again, but I think the amount is larger this time. I also don't understand the need for a domed stadium in Los Angeles, but that's not really pertinent to whether they can actually get the funding and site approved. I'm still pessimistic that they can, but if Mr. AEG can front enough cash, maybe it happens. I really don't think it all comes together this year.

The NFL cannot get a new stadium built anywhere in California so I will believe it when I see it. San Fran, Oak and SD all need new stadiums bad

My bad, retractable. AEG wants to have it ready for the 2015 football season. Retractable so they can close it for the NCAA Final Four.

Kind of ironic that cities across the country have used the threat of moving to LA as the stick to get new stadiums built on taxpayer dimes but somehow it doesn't work in state.

Anyone remember when owners used to actually have a decent stake in funding stadiums? Jerry Jones just did basically (right?) but it seems like the model now is mainly forcing a city or external investors to build these things. Maybe owners would be a bit less ready to take the nuclear option if they were invested in the place they played.

It also greatly increases the value of a franchise when the owner builds a stadium which the team owns rather than leases. Owners such as Jones, Kraft and Snyder which either outright funded the stadium themselves or bought the stadium have the franchises which are among the most valued in the league.

Perhaps it's by design. As long as the NFL can use LA as leverage against any city in need of a stadium upgrade there will continue to be upgrades.Take away that threat and perhaps many new stadiums don't get approved. :)

The only problem is that they need to commit $1 billion of private money raised through AEG and get a $300 million dollar bond passed.
