Tackling Dummies

Back to the point for a moment. He's played well past his position's average lifespan at a premium level while averaging over 400 touches per season. He's highly compensated. His best years are behind him. Uncapped year coming up soon. Mix all ingredients and it's time to go. Integrity and character are personal traits that a good amount of players have that do not receive press, they go about thier life without any notice. When a owner/GM cares about fan support, he'll be sitting by them soon, fans cheer for laundry. You'll still be a LT2 fan when he's gone, just like you were after they tossed Brees, Harrison, Seau and the others aside. So integrity, character, and fan support should not account for anything. I am not of that opinion. When Brett Favre had a poor season a few years back there was never speculation that he should be cut. LT2 and Favre were the face of their franchises for years and should be held in different regard than other players. Again, I could never see the Bears cutting Payton but I imagine you would be okay with that if he was injured and his numbers were off for one year. It's too easy to repeat the old adage that "business is business" but doing the right thing by someone who absolutely deserves it is always better business. Before this year everyone thought LT2 was, at the very least, a top 5 RB. He gets injured and he should be cut to save money? I would be outraged if I was Chargers or LT2 fan. There's not enough value to sell high at this point, but based on his usage, age and contract, it is time to move on.Because of who LT2 is as a football player and as a person which should be enough. As an example, the Yankees took a chance on re-signing and admittedly overpaying for Posada and M. Rivera. Why? Because of their past performances and loyalty to the organization. Sometimes you have to do the right thing for your players to show others that in addition to what you do on the field other things, such as character, do get rewarded. When B Williams was dumped by the Yankees the fans were outraged and the team had the common sense not to let that happen again. LT2, a certain hall of fame player who was hurt this year, deserves not to have this type of speculation surround him.
Companies (teams included) will cut/fire/downsize/reduce anybody at any time for any reason, nobody is exempt. When it benefits the company/team to let you go, they will.
