San Francisco 49ers: Aiyuk & Deebo wont be traded; SF draft - WR, CB, OL, S, RB, WR (39 Viewers)

The 49ers promoted RJ Gillen and Tariq Ahmad to directors of Pro Personnel. They will replace former GM Adam Peters.

Gillen was previously director of pro personnel, and Ahmad was previously director of college scouting.

John Lynch said the team is trying to keep Jauan Jennings beyond this season, either through an RFA tender or a contract extension.

ETA: if down to those 3, I'd take Bullocks. Sorenson is an offensive coach (?!) and Staley had one good year as Rams DC before being a terrible head coach. Bullocks has been with SF for 7 years and has been a CB coach, DB coach, and safeties coach. He knows the players and system as well as anyone and worked under both Saleh and Ryans.
You do know that "passing game coordinator" means that he coordinates the defensive passing game, right? Sorenson is absolutely a defensive coach

There are both are offensive and defensive passing game coordinators. I assumed he was an offensive coach since they didn't say defensive. "Passing game coordinator" usually refers to the offense, which is why I thought it was weird that they'd consider him for DC. It makes more sense now, but I still prefer Daniel Bullocks.

Mike Garafolo:

The 49ers are interviewing Chiefs defensive backs coach David Merritt for their defensive coordinator position, sources say. Merritt, a longtime trusted assistant for Steve Spagnuolo, helped coach up KC’s fourth-ranked pass defense this season.

Per Schefter:

Two big hires in San Francisco: the 49ers plan to hire their defensive passing game specialist Nick Sorensen as their new defensive coordinator, and former Chargers HC Brandon Staley for a prominent staff role, possibly assistant head coach.

The 49ers have hired former Raiders offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi to their coaching staff. He does not yet have an official title, coach Kyle Shanahan said. Lombardi previously worked for the 49ers from 2013 to 2016.

Lombardi, son of former NFL executive Michael Lombardi, started his coaching career in 2009 as an assistant at Fordham University. He then transitioned to the New England Patriots in 2011, initially serving as a scouting assistant.

During his previous four-season stint (2013-2016) with the 49ers, Lombardi held various roles, including assistant to head coach Jim Harbaugh, offensive and defensive assistant, and offensive quality control coach, working with coaches like Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly.

Following his time with the 49ers, Lombardi joined the New York Jets in 2017 as an offensive assistant. He joined the New England Patriots in 2019, initially assisting the quarterbacks before assuming the role of wide receivers coach for two seasons (2020-2021).

Lombardi spent the past two seasons as the Raiders' offensive coordinator before being dismissed in October alongside head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler in October.

49ers sign RT Colt McKivitz to a one year extension. He is now signed through 2025.

McKivitz' 1-year extension will pay him $7 million with around $4.55 million guaranteed. The front office likely split those guarantees up, so McKivitz won’t account for more than 2 percent of the 49ers cap in 2024 or 2025.

When you see the “$7 million” and read one year, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that the 49ers are paying McKivitz to start. But paying a right tackle no more than $3.5 million in 2024 is not “starter” money.

When I advocated for new blood on the coaching staff, I didn’t mean Mick Lombardi. If he’s half as obtuse as his dad he will be an anchor.

I believe they have a 3rd round comp pick as well

Traded for chase young

Armstead released. He’s been one of my favorite players for a long time but he wasn’t worth nearly his cap number going forward. Maybe if he sees there’s not a big money deal out there for him with his injury situation he will come back on a reduced deal.

Kawakami will not let the Danielle Hunter thing go so I’m guessing that’s a real target for them. The Armstead release is probably related.

Sweet!

49ers sign former Bills edge rusher Leonard Floyd to a 2-year, $20 million deal. He had 10.5 sacks to go along with 45 pressures last season.

Floyd, 31, has recorded 370 tackles, including 63 for a loss, 122 quarterback hits, 58 sacks, two safeties, 14 passes defensed, two interceptions, a touchdown, and four forced fumbles in 121 game appearances (120 starts) over his eight NFL seasons with the Bears, Los Angeles Rams, and Bills.

Relatively cheap

A bit pricey.

More edge help: The #49ers are signing #Panthers FA DE Yetur Gross-Matos to a 2-year deal worth $18M, source said.

Per Matt Barrows:

He’s someone the 49ers were interested in coming out of Penn State. They had him in for an official visit before the 2020 draft.

He can help keep both Bosa’s and Floyd’d snap counts in check. He’s a bigger-bodied player (6-6, 265 lbs. with nearly 35-inch arms) who has been good against the run, an issue for the 49ers this past season

He also can line up inside, something that similarly shaped players like Arik Armstead and Charles Omenihu have done in the past. (Play both DE and DT). That is, he gives the team flexibility.

George Odum given a 2 year, $10mil extension.

Lombardi:

Remember that the 49ers dropped from #15 to #25 DVOA in 2023. The loss of George Odum down the stretch was a contributing factor. Returning to at least the middle of the pack on ST is key for 2024 and beyond, hence the Odum extension.

Odum led NFL with 21 special teams tackles in 2022. He was leading league again before 2023 injury.

Odum had been under contract for just one more season prior to this extension, which'll give him a raise over what had been a vet min salary. Safety depth also needed.

Like the moves so far but I wasn't expecting a big splash move like some were predicting. The more I read on Gross-Matos, he seems like good fit.

Nice pickup here!

Early Wednesday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the San Francisco 49ers are signing former Charger linebacker Eric Kendricks to a one-year deal.

With the move, the 49ers have now found their third linebacker, as Kendricks likely serves as the Oren Burks replacement after the latter hit free agency earlier this week.

Kendricks will also serve as the short term replacement for Dre Greenlaw, who tore his Achilles during the Super Bowl and is currently rehabbing the injury.

As a member of the Los Angeles Chargers last season, Kendricks was a team captain and recorded 117 tackles, which ranked second on the team, while playing in only 15 games.

Additionally, Kendricks added 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble in 2023, while breaking up six passes.

49ers edge rushers entering last season:

Total career sacks: 81.5
Nick Bosa, Drake Jackson, Clelin Ferrell, Austin Bryant, Kerry Hyder, Robert Beal Jr

So far entering this season:

Total career sacks: 145
Nick Bosa, Leonard Floyd, Drake Jackson, Yetur Gross-Matos, Austin Bryant, Robert Beal Jr

(No Chase Young or Randy Gregory listed because they were added mid season)

Now were cookin!

Schefter: Trade: the Texans are trading defensive tackle Maliek Collins to the 49ers for a 7th round pick.

Rohan:

Collins is 28 and entering his prime. Had 5 sacks in 2023 (career-high) and 48 pressures last season, and was a key to turning around that Texans DL run defense last year.

Big-time deal for the Niners.

The emphasis on his pass rush stats by the media and 7th round trade compensation suggests to me that he’s a major liability against the run. Which is not a great pairing with Hargrave.

Arik Armstead & Maliek Collins comparisons over the past 3 season’s

Armstead:
• games, 38
• sacks, 11
• QB hits, 28
• pressures, 148
• tackles, 101
• tackle for loss, 13

Collins:
• games, 46
• sacks, 11
• QB hits, 35
• pressures, 116
• tackles, 107
• tackle for loss, 26

I did this for those who don’t know who tf Collins is. Similar numbers overall, with Collins missing fewer games. Collins also had more PBU’s, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries and INTs…Collins will also cost about $10mil less than Armstead this season.

From Twitter:

Maliek Collins = pass rushing DT
Jordan Elliot = run defending DT

On known run downs, Elliot is in. On known passing downs, Collins is in.

It’s hard to replace Armstead, but one thing this will do is keep the 49ers DL fresh. Remember how gassed they were in SB?

They’ve just replaced Kinlaw and Armstead with Collins and Elliot. I think that’s at best a wash talent wise and it’s the same number of bodies. They are in the same place depth wise, just with lower cap hits.

Hopefully Kalia Davis will actually play next season, he's probably our best run stuffing DT.

I'm not jumping off the Davis train, I think he will be good if he can stay healthy...but that's a big if.
