Santana Moss and his NON-Receptions (1 Viewer)

I have Moss as one of my #1/#2 WR in a ppr league. He had three "receptions" last week which were from behind the QB so he doesn't get the ppr. Maybe he touches the ball more this year, but are his receptions going to be way down this year?

They ran that play all the time last year. If Brunell's pass is a little inaccurate it becomes a backwards pass. I dont see how you could predict a decrease in receptions off that.

Yeah, that normally is a screen pass, and I'm not aware of a single instance last year where it was counted as a run.

As long as his YPC is astronomical the Skins are going to get him the ball.

Saunders isn't a moron.

I'd like to see all three plays. The first play of the game, Moss was lined-up much deeper than usual. So, it's possible they prefer to line him up deeper now on screens, which could lead to rushes instead of receptions. IIRC, towards the end of last year, some teams (especially the Eagles) started to jump that screen and really disrupt it. So, they may not intend for it to be a "run," but they do appear to be setting the play up deeper behind the LOS on purpose. I'd like to see the other "runs," though, before concluding that. I think one of his runs was an end around.

Thanks for the insight. I like that he's getting touches, hopefully he steps up a step or brunnel leads him a bit more...

I'd really like to see the other screen (I'm pretty sure his 6-yard run was a screen, too) to see if that's the norm.As I said, as the season progressed last year, teams started to jump that play. The Eagles in week 17 came really close a couple times to taking it the other way for 6. After I saw that, I thought, "Faking the screen then sending Moss down the sideline would be a great play." Gibbs took my advice ;) and they tried it against Tampa in the playoffs and Brunell just barely overthrew Moss. So, my guess (admittedly only based off that one play in the video) is that they will line him up deeper for the screens. This gives the D a few more yards to have to cover to jump the play and it also gives Moss a few extra yards to set up blocks. And, if the D jumps the screen, it opens things up a little more to fake that screen and send Moss on a fly or even hit one of the screen blockers like Cooley. A CB jumping a screen five yards deep in the backfield opens up a lot of territory. The only downside I can see to having him line up deeper is the risk of a fumble and that's probably a pretty small risk. It's an easy pass to throw and catch, especially with the limited threat of a defender being on top of the play.In other words, lining him up deeper makes sense to me despite the fumble risk and we could see about 10-15 extra rushes this year instead of receptions for Moss.

Absolutely. There's nobody in the league better than he is after the catch, and few are as good.
You are partially correct. Steve Smith is equally good if not better with those passes.

I keep hearing how Brunell isn't quickly picking up Saunders' offense...do you think this'll affect Moss until he does? I have to think, as many do, that there's no way he duplicates last year's gaudy numbers. But where do you think he ranks right now, esp. in PPR leagues? Is he still a WR2 at that Wayne/Chambers/Ward level?

(Truth be told, I might be able to get him for one of Ahman/Deuce/TJones in a PPR league where I can start 3 WRs, and already have Fitz and Marvin...that would be a pretty sweet 3-WR combo if I add Moss.)

:link: I've never heard this.
Can't link, it's from another pay site, but good call -- maybe "I keep hearing" was too strong, but he looked lost on Monday night. Anyway, here's the other site's take:"Brunell continues to struggle with the new offense. He looked uncomfortable Monday night and ended the game with just 163 yards and no touchdowns. He's facing a tougher opponent this week in a highly hostile Texas Stadium. This matchup is shaping up to be another difficult one for Brunell."

"Continues to struggle" implies that it was a pre-season problem too, no? Maybe I'm reading into it too much....

I don't think he looked lost Monday night. And, I would completely ignore the preseason. What they did Monday night couldn't be more different than what they did in preseason.

Didn't Brunell have his biggest games against the Cowboys last season? I am tempted to start him :hophead:

It isn't uncommon for QBs to start slow when taking on a new system.

Brunell will get better by the week.

I think he had his best 65 minutes against the Cowboys, yes. The other 55 mins . . . not so much.

Brunell isn't likely to EVER fully grasp this offense. He's admitted that he's spent quite a bit of time trying to learn it but that he was not there yet.

For a team that was a playoff team last year, kind of foolish to have them learning an offense that could take a couple of years for the players to fully grasp.

For the long term, Sauders might have been a good pickup. Terrible move for them in the short run.

What good is an offense if the players can't learn it?

This organization is simply a joke. THank God I root for the uniform and the uniform only.
