Santana (1 Viewer)

I thought I heard a quote this morning (local radio, wasn't really paying attention) that he was trying to get outs instead of strikeouts. Pretty amazing if he's good enough to just change up his style like that just so he can go longer into the game.

And he had a walk and double at the plate...

Here are a few factors:

1. Santana (along with the other Twins starters) are on a pretty strict pitch count...had a link but I guess you have to register. Basically, Gardernhire lets em go until they hit 105 pitches...no new inning for the starter after they hit 105. He was at 108 after 7 against the Braves and wanted to go back out for the 8th, but Gardenhire said no.

2. The Twins were up 5-0 early, and the lead kept growing - so he decided to go right after the hitters and let them put it in play (instead of going for the K). I guess the Mets hit quite a few hard shots, they were just right at the defense.

As far as batted balls go, a pitcher can only control whether they're more likely to be groundballs, flyballs, or pop-ups. I believe line drives are beyond a pitcher's control as well, but I'm not sure.Once a ball is hit, its fate is determined by the defense, the park, the skill of the hitter, and luck.

My point is he's a strikeout pitcher but he purposely was trying to put the ball in play (according to the comment I heard) to keep his pitch count down. Obviously he can't control everything, but to change up your style like that and still throw a complete game shutout shows some skill on his part.
