Santonio Holmes (1 Viewer)

WR's are almost impossible to count on for consistency. Only a very very few at the top get enough receptions every week to call them studs. Even many of these are dissapointing more often than not (Steve Smith comes to mind for me.)

So what you want is a good WR in an ideal situation, and to me right now there's no better candidate to join the "stud" than Santonio Holmes. Consider:

1. He is the main target of his QB. (Always of primary importance.) In past years, this was Hines Ward, but no longer as the Steelers seek to stretch the field.

2. the Steelers are known as a running team, which means Santonio will enjoy single coverage situations, especially in play action.

3. Big Ben has gotten better and better as a QB this year, and the Steelers are rewarding him by opening up the offense.

4. Saqntonio has great hands, is very quick, and will gain lots of yardage per reception.

People have been waiting for Santonio to become elite since last year. He's started off slow, but come on strong the last two games he's played. I've saved a place for him on my bench; now, I'm looking for a second half explosion.

Tough to say. I traded a 1st and a 3rd for him in a PPR dynasty in the offseason and feel like I got a pretty good deal. The guy is obviously a talented player who will be a threat for 1,000 yards every season for the forseeable future. He has a great young QB throwing him the rock. But will he make the big leap into stud territory?

Tough to say. He doesn't have the beastly skill set of Randy Moss or Andre Johnson, but I think he's capable of being a Reggie Wayne/TJ Housh type and I think he's demonstrated an ability to torch defensive backs on a regular basis. He's super athletic and very dangerous everywhere on the field. I view him as a rock solid dynasty WR2 with little downside and a pretty high ceiling.

That said, I think the notion that he has passed Ward on the depth chart is misguided. Hines Ward is one of the most overlooked WRs in the NFL right now. He's a very solid player and he's still in the prime of his career, so I don't expect him to just disappear. I see this as a WR1A/WR1B situation moving forward. Both guys will get enough looks and make enough plays to be viable FF starters in most formats.

Ward has missed games in each of the last two seasons for the first time in his career and he's going on 32 in March. That alone isn't reason to send him out to pasture, but when you consider how physical he plays in the blocking game you have to wonder if he's going to start suffering nagging injuries.

and when watching him play...realize he is only in his 6th game of his 2nd season....actually he missed one this year so it's was his 5th of his second year

Santonio has been looking solid, but I'm not sure you can count him jumping into the elite WR category before others simply because Pitt's run-first system and awesome defense rarely put him in the position of having enough opportunities to rack up the yards and TDs that a top three receiver would need. There are games in which Pitt simply stops throwing the ball in the second half because they get up early and the defense is so good that there is little chance for the other team to come back. That may change in the coming years, but for now, I think a guy like Braylon Edwards is more likely to break out with monster stats simply because CLE has an awful defense and is often playing catchup.

Thats saying a lot. But I won't disagree completely.

Yeah, and you have to like a guy who'll tweak his hammy during warm ups and sit out the game ensuring you get a nice donut from him. What a stud.

I know there are a lot of TJ Housh fans on the board, but in my opinion he's merely a good WR in a great situation.I think Wayne is better, but people forget that he was a fringe 1st round WR entering the draft. Obviously the scouts were wrong about him, but you also can't discount the positive effect that Peyton Manning has had on his career. Put Reggie Wayne on the Dolphins or Bills and he might only be a borderline top 15 guy.

A good WR with a great QB can give you big numbers. I think Holmes is in the same class as Housh and Wayne strictly in terms of talent. Whether or not he produces on their level will depend mostly on situational factors.

Is Holmes really big enough to be an elite WR? Is he Steve Smith/Joey Galloway?

I own him, but I don't hold him quite that highly.

i don't know about 40 times but he looks very fast during games. he also seems pretty fearless. he might never be an elite wr, but he'll be a low end number one fantasy wr by next season, if he isn't already.

He is good - and young - and seems to buy into Steelers football so far.

Working w/ Ward can only be a major plus - how to succeed as a non-6 ft WR.

So far - hands/speed/brain/attitude all seem to be there. Plax is extremely talented - and is blossomming w/ the Gints - but just was never a Steeler.

Steelers WR's almost always go later than ADP - while the Buress's of the world usually go early

Pick him in the right spot and he should help your team win for quite a few years.

Ill tell you one thing. That 2nd touch catch vs ARI and that TD catch vs DEN were beautiful to watch. On the DEN TD he took a huge shot in the endzone and held onto the ball.

I was very impressed with that as well..reminded me a bit of that TO TD against Dallas in the playoffs when he was a 9er

Bitter much?

He reminds me of Holt. Runs good routes, does everything fast, has good hands and one of the best deep threats in the game. Dynasty wise this guys a gem and even in redraft he's an every week starter. He's currently 13th in my league on a ppg basis. He's also got a GREAT schedule over the next few weeks facing Cin (28), Balt (7), Cle (29), NYJ (26), Mia (14) and Cin (28) for an avg of 22 over the next 6 weeks.

I have been loking at Holes. I was thinking trying to get him for selvin young. The holmes owner has henry.

If they're so useless, why are you reading them? And why are you posting in them?

That was against Green Bay. TO had dropped, like usual, some big ones earlier on. And when he finally made that last one, it almost drove him to tears (literally) as he was being congratulated. He held onto the ball like it was a baby as Young congratulated him. I remember it well.I do think, however, that catch was a defining moment in his confidence as a big-time WR. And, unfortunately, as becoming THE man, in his mind. What a game...

I'm considering starting both Holmes and Ward this weekend.
Take this thinly-veiled WDIS bull#### to the Assistant Coaches Forum! :yucky:
Get a room ladies. :D BTW, I think Ward outperforms Holmes the rest of the year, but I am in the minority. Regardless, I LOVE Big Ben from here on out.

This will be Holmes' fourth regular-season game in Ohio since the former Ohio State star became the Steelers' 2006 first-round draft pick, and he has scored a touchdown in every game there so far.

you are right, it was GreenBay. I just saw some NFL films special on it.. TO dropped a ton of easy ones early and you are right, he was in tears afterwards.amazing how many future head-coaches were on the sidelines that day
