Save $ on cell service -- Ting Mobile / Solavei (+ other MVNOs) (3 Viewers)

Maybe. Most people don't talk 1000 minutes though. Average is like 300 something. It is interesting that it is a contact, so even though it's a limited time plan, you lock it in when you sign up. I guess if you're a big talker who doesn't use much data it might make sense... If coverage dictates it anyways. You can get unlimited voice and text for as cheap as $19 I think, but no data.

In all honesty - I am on the fence with the Verizon deal. Not 100% but the numbers make it decent.

Adjusting to 500-1K-250, the Ting bill is $36. I will have to see what kind of phones they are offering free. And if they try to tack on a $10 line fee - the conversation is over.

Thanks for all your help in this thread. Converted to Ting in Nov or Dec with a refurb phone - and am well ahead with no service issues on Ting (data could be a little faster).

Of course there is a line fee. Did you really think $45 means $45? Remember when unlimited data really ment 5gb of data?

I decided to look into this again. I sat down and put a whole years worth of bills and usage into the Ting calculator and it came up that I am in the 2% that Ting cannot help.

Two smart phones with unlimited Data and text, and 1500 shared minutes and one dumb phone.

I have Sprint and pay roughly $153/mo. before fees and taxes.

The real difference for me was not the amount of data I was using (I was on unlimited) but the amount of data I really needed. I switched to Ting and limited my data by using Wifi whenever I could. My bills went from $200 for 4 phones,(1 smart phone) to $60 for 5 phones (4 smart phones) the last few months

I was using most of my data because it was unlimited and I didn't care, but it has been very easy to reduce it to < 100MB.

what is the actual usage on each line for min/text/data? And your zip code?

nice....Since my switch to Ting my average bill has been $60 (two phones - low minute - high text and medium date users). No coverage problems ever. My last bill with Sprint was $180. I doubt i will ever look back.

Was just about to post the same email. Extremely helpful - as is this thread. Never would have switched to Ting without it, and I'm saving a boatload of money every month now.

Whenever it is I finish getting my database built and get my website fully operational, I'm counting on those of you I helped to help me spread the word about it :)

If you buy an unlocked iPhone 5s from Apple, can you use this on Ting?

And Hulk what is your verdict on Ting in the DC area? I'm in Leesburg.

My other thought is Virgin Mobile.

I need to pulls some numbers together, this is my first view of Ting.

TIA,

Ting and Virgin both use Sprint's network so their be the same coverage wise.I've got my database 2.0 up and running now, so give me your usage and any other preferences ( like for roaming, specific phones, etc) and I'll let you know the results.

Oh, I don't think you can get the iPhone 5 on Ting yet. Just the 4s
Correct. Not yet. Rumors seem to say it is coming soon. Their Ting app for iphone that they came out with a week ago is optimized for iphone5.
I got notified about the iPhone beta on Ting a while back but it was a PITA - couldn't port in an active number, so I'd either have to give up my number or port it to another phone and then swap them back once my iPhone was active on Ting.

They said that would be fixed when they officially went live; haven't heard yet that they have done so.

Hulk, how doea Aio wireless line up with the rest now that they've lowered their prices some?
Pretty decent. But know that they speed cap their LTE at 8 MBps, which is slower than T-Mo's HSPA+
Aren't all ATT mvno's data capped at 8 MBps?
nope. Just them. T-Mobile had one that's capped at 5 Mbps. Both are carrier owned MVNOs, they probably do it to increase profit margins. They don't actively mention the cap, it's buried on the website in both cases.

sweet, I'll run this through my new query engine tonight. This should be a good test :)

What's the best MVNO that uses a network other than Sprint? My house is in a dead spot for cellular. Years ago nothing worked at my house. Sprint still doesn't work. Verizon is super strong and that's what I have. AT&T and T-Mobile are OK.

Pack,

FYI, there are over 126,000 different potential plans in my database right now :)

Unfortunately, my coverage checker isn't finished yet, so I have to rely on cellreception.com. According to them, in Muckwango there isn't much difference between the carriers. AT&T and Verizon are just slightly better than T-Mobile and Sprint. In Decatur, T-Mobile is by far the best, then Sprint, then Verizon, and AT&T is bringing up the rear. Literally the exact opposite of at your house, lol. Ultimately, none of them will be perfect, but they should probably all give about the same experience.

So, your absolute cheapest would be with Zact. You'd be looking at $73.78 total, plus taxes. The downside with them is that they have a very limited phone selection. Sprint's network, LTE access, free roaming, and if your dumb phone is for a kid, they have parental controls.

Next best would be Consumer Cellular (on AT&T's network). You'd be looking at $90. No LTE, but its HSPA+, probably 6 MBps. Free roaming too. Its GSM, so any unlocked GSM phones work.

Next after that is Ting, coming in @ $93.

After that, prices jump to $125, so its probably one of these three for you. :)

Depends on what you need. Give me the same info Pack just did above and I'll run an analysis for you.

Appreciate the work!

I priced it using the link you provided earlier for the reduced Ting prices and came out around $88, so we are in the same ballpark. Either way it's way cheaper than the $154/mo I'm paying now.

I have to do some more figuring, but I think Ting is the way I'm leaning.

Thank you again!

Keerock, any hidden fees on that one? Do you have to buy/finance your phone through them?

No, you can bring your own device... but they do offer to sell them obviously... and have the "Next" plan which finances (no interest) the device on your monthly bill.

Also includes unlimited talk (we used to have 700 minutes which we never used) and unlimited text (used to pay $30) for that. I used to have unlimited data (that I really only used at most 1Gb of) so I had to give that up... but everyone else used to have 300Mb and would get close every month. New plan has 10Gb shared. The kicker... they now support tethering! This clinched it for me.

Hulk - Heard anything about the 'new' Target based mobile program called Brightspot? It is a T-Mobile-based program with decent prices.

$35 - Unlimited Talk/Text - No Web

$50 - Unlimited Talk/Text/Web - 1G @ 4G Speed

$65 - Unlimited Talk/Text/Web - 4G @ 4G Speed

*earn a $25 Target GiftCard for every 6 months of Brightspot payments.

** 5% discount if you use a Target Debit/Credit card.

Buy a phone thru them or BYOP as long as it works on T-Mobile.

The one thing I am unsure of is the availability of HotSpot on an iPhone on this program. Their site is kinda thin on customer support. When you call, you get sent to an ordinary Target employee, and I didn't go thru to see if they could help. If they are on T-Mobile, can they turn something like that off?

They don't support hotspotting. You can probably do it anyways, but they might cut you off if they catch you. Then again, they might not.

Their pricing can be beaten. For example, the $35 plan is $29 @ Solavei for the same thing, the $50 plan is $49 @ Solavei (although if you shop at Target Brightspot is probably better) and $45 at Straight Talk.

The $65 plan is actually the cheapest you can find a 4GB plan on T-Mo's service... but at that point you have to be asking yourself if its not better to pay another $5 and get unlimited data from T-Mobile itself, along with all of the support that comes from using a main carrier.

I am on Verizon now in DC, Is there a difference in quality (data speed too) between them and T-mobile?

I'm in the DC area and I use T-Mobile's HSPA+ network here. I also have used Verizon's 3G network in the past. It is somewhere between 5 and 10 times faster.

However, Verizon's LTE is roughly 2 to 3 times faster than T-Mobile's HSPA+.

Either will be a huge upgrade for you.

I don't use a ton.

I average about 200 texts, 750 mb data, and 250 minutes. I have a 250 texts, 450 minutes, and unlimited data plan that I pay about $75 for. I also have a 1G data plan over 3 months for an ancient iPad that I pay $25 for.

My goal is to remove the iPad data plan and update the phone to one that I can use tethering for what little I need external data for my iPad. I also plan to update my iPad, and will not get that with the wireless ability, will share data on iPhone. I will get an external battery for my iPhone because I have heard that tethering is a battery drainer.

I can't decide with T-Mobile whether to go with the $27/month fee for the 32 gb 5s or just buy an unlocked new one from Apple up front. Price works out the same.

Yeah, its basically 0% financing.

Are you deadset on Apple products? Nexus 5 is in my opinion a better phone than the 5s and MUCH less expensive. A Nexus 5 and 7 (tablet) is a pretty decent setup. And you could have both for less than the price of just the 5s.

For you usage pattern, if you could deal with being on Sprint's network (with LTE), Zact would meet all of your needs for $33.40 a month. But no iPhone and they have a limited phone selection. Free tethering though. Ting is the next cheapest at $39 (also includes tethering).

If you are cool with AT&T's network, you could try GHz Cellular. They're realitively new, but you'd be covered by their $40 plan and could have any phone (including the iPhone 5). Free tethering.

I have an iMac, my kids all have ipod touches, all my media is on iTunes and I have a couple of Apple TVs. I am a bit of an Apple fanatic. ;) I have spent a bunch of $$$ on apps for the iOS devices, so switching would be a PITA and cost me some $$$.

I don't know why but I don't like and understand the Android systems. Why it seems like there are hundreds of different versions of Android to work on the various devices. I also don't trust as much the way that apps are available to the Android market. This may just be me, but I like Apple's tight control over who can issue an app for their iOS. Less potential bad stuff!

After many years of dealing with the deadly blue screens on Windows, I have fallen back in love with my Apple products, and how well they work together. If I have to pay a bit more for that, It is OK. No Head Banging against a Screen or Keyboard is worth a ton of cash!

Checked them out, like the pricing, their site says only up to the iPhone 4s, I sent them an email about the iPhone 5s. Is this just something where if it works on AT&T, it will work on them?

I imagine they could take an unlocked 5s if you bought it directly from Apple. Definitely verify with them though, I'm just giving my best guess.

Sucks that you are iecosystemed. You'll never iescape imo. ;)
