Save $ on cell service -- Ting Mobile / Solavei (+ other MVNOs) (1 Viewer)

If I am to stay with my ATT iphone, what would be the cheapest/best option? Solavei?
Actually for you, it'd be Tmo's prepaid plan. 100 minutes, unl texts, 5GB of high speed data for $30.
I ordered my sim, and now I can't seem to find this plan option. Am I losing m mind, or has t-mobile in the past few days changed their options?
Its burried. You have to look near the bottom to find the link. I'll see if I can find a direct link for you.

Gotcha. Just wanted to make sure it was still an option before I install the new sim and such.

:hifive:

Thanks Hulk. Any idea how long for service to be up and running? I ported a number from ATT to my new account. Can I swap back to my ATT sim in the mean time to make a call (if need be)?

Your AT&T should work until the port goes through I believe. No harm in trying I guess.

My first full months bill on Ting was $41.06 including taxes and what-naught. Old bill with Verizon was $159.00.

Thanks, my friend. Before I go digging, do you know off the top of your head if it is necessary to have a phone that uses a SIM card? I'm still using an iPhone 3G and would prefer to not get a new one until this one dies.

different carriers require different things. Typically T-Mobile and at &t have phones with Sim cards, sprint and Verizon don't. The ones with sim cards are much easier to bring from carrier to carrier. Let me know the following: current carrier and cost, zip code (to check coverage), average monthly minutes, texts, and data. I can get you a narrow it down to a couple good matches from there from there.

Damn this new board! Ugh, sorry about the formatting. Ridiculous.

ETA: If you can't read through that terrible formatting, if you want to keep your current phone its Spot Mobile for you. 250 mins, 250 texts, 50 MBs of data for $14.99. If you get a different phone, its Talk for Good for $10 a month.

You rock, Hulk. Looks like Spot Mobile is the way to go. I like the extra 100 minutes of talk anyway, because I do occasionally end up racking up minutes catching up with friends in far away places.

No problem. I'm building a website that'll do this automatically in my spare time, and I'm happy to help out fellow FBGers.

Hulk... to avoid the formatting... click the little button in the upper left of the reply window. This will turn off the rich formatting and put you in text mode... this will look/work just like the old board.

So, just for giggles...

Paying $185/month through ATT and that includes a 22% corporate discount.

78681 / 78644 zip code. Wife is on contract

We share 1400 unlimited minutes and use between 500 and 900 a month. However, my wife talks to her mom a lot and I'm pretty sure the mobile-to-mobile minutes are free.

I have 5GB tethering and typically use between 4G and 5G of data. This amount may be reduced greatly in coming months. I do need tethering, however.

WIfe uses under 500mb of data each month, but she does use some.

Probably 1k texts between us including some picture sharing of the kid.

I'm on an iPhone5 that I'd like to keep. Wife is on iP4 that she loves.

I know TMobile accepts ip5 now but they don't have LTE in Austin. One of the best things about the phone - the main reason to upgrade from the 4 IMO - is the speed increase. No idea what the TMo speeds are in this area.

Tmo has the HSPA+42 which is nearly as fast anyways... but if you have an AT&T iPhone, it might be looking for it on the 1900Mhz band, which Tmo doesn't have it on (it is moving it over though, market by market). I'll look into things for you. I'm very confident we can get you down in price.

Oh, are you okay being on different carriers? It would make sense here actually.
Sure, maybe. If it makes sense, great. That would be surprising if two different carriers were more price advantageous than a family plan on one.

You seem to have good coverage options in both locations. AT&T is the worst, but still looks pretty decent.

If it came to using Tmo to save more on the contract, would you be willing to sell your iPhone5 and pick up an unlocked Tmo version (probably from apple directly)?

First, know that the plan prices do not include taxes/fees, which vary by where you live. Not sure if that was boiled into your AT&T cost or not.<br /><br />For the wife, Air Voice Wireless is it. Unlimited talk/text and 500MBs of data is $40 a month. Uses AT&T's network, roaming is free, all she has to do is swap the SIM card in her current phone.<br /><br />For you, you're a bit harder. Mostly because you tether and very few MVNOs support this AND you use an iPhone, which again only some MVNOs have. A couple of different directions you could go here:<br /><br />Solavei. Its $49 a month. You can bring your AT&T iPhone5, but I'm not sure if Tmo has moved its 1900Mhz frequency over to HSPA+ in your location, so if you do this, you might want to sell it and replace it with the Tmobile version of the iPhone5. Anyways, its unlimited talk/text and the first 4GB of data are high speed (HSPA+), you may be throttled beyond 4GBs though. As for tethering, it doesn't violate their ToS, but it is "unsupported". This means that your phone has to have the option to tether baked in to use it. I am currently on Solavei, have a Nexus 4, and have had no issues tethering, works fine. I believe the iPhone5 has tethering built into it, but I'm not certain, I've never used one. Solavei has free roaming (including data roaming up to 100MBs) and is pretty decent from my own experiences. That said, it does have some glitches with picture texting... you need to tweak some settings to get it to work, but the instructions on how to do it are online and its not that difficult. I don't even picture text anymore myself... all my photos auto upload to Google+ and then I can just share them with whomever I want quick and easy. Solavei is supposed to be amongst the first Tmobile MVNOs to get Tmo's new LTE, but I'm not sure exactly when that happens. However, using HSPA+, my download speeds are typically around 12 to 14 MBs per second, which is pretty fast anyways (although I came from Sprint's slow 3G so...).<br /><br />The other option that makes sense for you is T-Mobile's new uncarrier plan. $70 for unlimited talk/text and 4.5 GBs of highspeed data (throttled afterwards). On this particular plan, tethering is free up to 4.5 GBs. They also have a $70 plan with unlimited data, but tethering is capped at 500 MB on that one and you have to pay more to bump that up.<br /><br />Either way, you are probably better served by selling your AT&T iPhone5 and purchasing the T-Mo version (Unlocked though!). Solavei has some hoops to jump through for it to work for you, but it will probably suit you and is $21 cheaper a month. T-Mo would be smooth sailing, but there is the price difference. Its really up to you, would you rather save the $ or be smooth sailing? Honestly, $21 a month adds up, so I would recommend trying to make Solavei work for you first and if it doesn't, then going to Tmo. Thats the good thing about being contract free... you can just up and switch if it isn't working for you.<br /><br />So, if you go Air Voice and Solavei, total cost for you is $89 a month + taxes/fees. Just shy of $100 a month in savings.<br /><br />P to the S: I normally offer folks free Solavei SIM cards (they're $9) because I buy them in bulk for way less. But the iPhone5 uses a nano SIM which isn't available in bulk yet, so I can't help you out there. If you do go this route, please use one of the Solavei sign up links in the first post. Their referral program gives you a recurring $20 a month discount if you refer 3 people (as long as those people stay with Solavei). Kee, I saw it, and thought I clicked it. Half of the buttons don't even work for me. For example, if I want to bold something, the button doesn't work. I have to type out the tags myself. No idea why this is happening, but I'm assuming its Microsoft's fault.

I have some unsavory news to report.

I bought a used HTC EVO 4G through the Ting website. Well, I thought it was through Ting. However, it was through another company called "Glyde". I attempted to activate the phone today, but kept running into roadblocks. The MEID/ESN number wasn't coming up as valid. I called Ting and spoke to a representative. They informed me that the phone was reported as stolen. Great. Glyde sold me a stolen phone. Glyde doesn't talk to people on the phone. The representative was telling me I had to reply to Glyde via email. This is where I put on the brakes.

I told the representative that from my perspective I purchased a used phone through the Ting website. The URL at the top of the screen said "ting". I told him that they need to deal with Glyde and make this right.

For the moment I'm wait and see mode.

Hooper, that link is blocked for me at work. Does Glyde have a return policy of some sort? I'd think they would.

Hopper, how long have you had the phone? If its under 48 hours, return should be easy. If its over, I bet you can still return it anyways but you'll need to jump through some customer service hoops no doubt:

Return Policy

Sometimes items aren't what you expected, and we understand that. If your item is not As-Described, you can return it within 48 hours of delivery. All you need to do is let us know! Simply choose one of these three options.

Respond to the email you received from Glyde when your item was delivered.

or

Go to the Transactions page of your account and "Reject" the item.

or

Email us at service@glyde.com.

Once you've let us know that you want to return the item, we'll send you a pre-addressed, pre-stamped shipping kit. Simply put your item in the kit, drop it in the mail, and you're done. You'll have your money back for the item in a few days.

Repeat returns prompt a simple shared responsibility policy in which the shipping cost of the return is split between the buyer and seller, usually around $5.00.

I'm in process of a return. I've contacted them, but haven't heard back yet. Yes, I should be within the 48 hour period.

You seem to have good coverage options in both locations. AT&T is the worst, but still looks pretty decent.
Hulk, can you explain these ratings? What do the numbers mean? And how can you tell AT&T looks decent from this info (even though its listed as the worst)?

Hooper, that link is blocked for me at work. Does Glyde have a return policy of some sort? I'd think they would.
I'm in process of a return. I've contacted them, but haven't heard back yet. Yes, I should be within the 48 hour period.
Good. Good luck. Sucks that this happened. Glyde is a seperate company from Ting, but they help them with their used marketplace. Be sure to let Ting know of this officially. If it is happening frequently, Ting may want to sever that relationship.

The ratings are literally rating compiled from customer reviews of the coverage. While some people in various regions are "nicer" than people in other regions, the general rule of thumb I've been using is that if its over a 1, it works. Over 1.25 and it works well enough that it probably isn't an issue. The second number is the number of reviews that company has received in that zip code. It is rare to see very high ratings numbers because most people are motivated to write a review when they're upset with something, rather than happy with it.

Done. Got a reply email from Glyde. Process underway. Oddly enough they just dropped the price a ton on the used phone I bought. Lesson learned. I still intend to follow through and do this, but will likely go with a refurbished phone this time.

You want my old Evo 3d? Its just collecting dust. Works fairly well, although the screen doesn't always register touch anymores, its a bit wonky after 18 months of heavy usage. I'll sell it to you cheap imo.

I appreciate the offer, but I'm likely going to go with one of the Samsung S models.

I'm going to be selling my Sprint Galaxy SIII after I'll basically be forced to switch to Verizon for a new job. I paid $350 for it used.

I'll sell it for $300 shipped with screen protector attached, a Urban Armor Gear case AND an Otterbox Defender case (which is a ##### to get on and I could never get the volume to work right with it on, but if you swear by it...). Only catch is you have to wait until May 9th for me to ship it, which is when my billing cycle ends. Sprint won't turn my phone off early.

Thats a good deal. I think refurbed Galaxy s2s are like 180-190 via Ting. S3 is definitely a lot more phone imo.

Yeah and I know I'm selling below market value, but I thought hooper could use a hand.

Hulk, thanks for the info. Sorry for the delay. A couple questions...

1. Verizon doesn't work in my house.

2. What's the "best" plan for us to both still be together?

3. The one for the wife - that's unlimited minutes to any other phone at any time?

4. If I keep my AT&T iph5 and go with a Tmo variant, I'm back to getting 3G speeds for the time being? Maybe forever?

1. Lol. I might need to find a different source for judging coverage then2. Are you hell bent on being on the same one? Your costs would go up because your usage is different. I guess you guys could both be on Solavei for $98 plus tax. But basically you're forcing her into a more expensive plan by doing this.3. Unlimited calls to whatever, any time. Most prepaid carriers don't bother with the mobile to mobile between 5:27 and 7:14 mumbo jumbo. That's all just distraction the carriers invented to make you think you're catching a break while they roughly pound your buttocks IMO4. It really depends on where you live. T-mo is switching the at&t frequency over to hspa+42 currently. Some areas are already done. By year end they all are supposed to be done. By me, I get about 12 to 14 mb per second download speeds from t-mo's towers, which is pretty fast IMO. That said, without the hspa+, it would be fairly slow. The amount of data you use, I'd recommend selling your current one and getting the T-Mobile version.

I meant to post about Ting when Joe Rogan started talking about it in his podcast.

Kudos to HULK for being a better contributor/ifriend then me.

Hulk - what's the battery life on the google nexus s? If I end up buying a new phone id probably just move to something else entirely. I love my iPhone but i like playing with new stuff.

nexus s? No idea. I have a nexus 4 if that's what you meant. I get through the day no problem with medium usage. If I'm using it heavily like the other day when the internet was down at work, then ilk have to pop it on the charger at some point. It actually charges very quickly, faster than any other phone I've had. I highly recommend the nexus 4, best phone dollar fit dollar by far.
