Save $ on cell service -- Ting Mobile / Solavei (+ other MVNOs) (1 Viewer)

I have a coworker with an S2. I'll ask him about battery life after lunch.I am assuming that part of it is due to "new phone syndrome" ;) you may be killing the battery life with screen time. Try turning down the brightness as well.
I understand what you mean about new phone syndrome, but yesterday was the day that worried me most. Went and played a round of golf yesterday morning. Tee time was 8:15am. Unplugged the phone at about 7am. Didn't use it for anything. Never touched the phone during the round of golf. Phone was dead when we finished our round. I'm not sure if I had the data stuff turned on or not, but regardless it just doesn't seem right.
Thats not at all as it should be. You may have a bad battery. Call Ting and ask about an exchange.

This is my plan in the long run. For now I'm trying to do some experiments to see if the problem is me. Have I had the phone doing unnecessary work in the background? Does the wifi connection drain the battery when I let it sit there? Etc.

If you cancel a line of Service, or if we cancel it for good cause, during its contract term, you'll have to pay an Early Termination Fee. If your contract term results from your purchase of an Advanced Device, your Early Termination Fee will be $350 minus $10 for each full month of your contract term that you complete. (For a complete list of Advanced Devices, check verizonwireless.com/advanceddevices.) Otherwise, your Early Termination Fee will be $175 minus $5 for each full month of your contract term that you complete. Cancellations will become effective on the last day of that month's billing cycle, and you are responsible for all charges incurred until then.

Might have to revisit this. Verizon is finally asking me to verify my employer - the one I left 5 years ago.

Bye-bye 22% discount.
Shhhhhh... AT&T still giving my previous employer's discount... the employer went out of business 2 years ago.
Same here. I have the 22% discount through a company I haven't worked for in almost 7 years.

This board is fouling up for me hardcore:Slap: Your ETF would about $250.Hooper: Go to settings, then battery, and it will tell you what is using up the most of your battery today. I believe you have a bad battery entirely based upon the golf story though.

Hulk, want to make sure I do this in the correct order.

First I sign up and use one of the referrals, get my $25, buy my new phones from Ting, then have them port over my numbers from AT&T. Do I need to tell AT&T that I am leaving (no contract) or do those lines get cancelled on their end when the number ports??

yup. No need to call att, when a number is ported out it cancels automatically.

Tracfone/Carlos Slim just bought out PagePlus. Expect that service to go to hell in handbasket over the next 6 months imo. When Tracfone acquired Simple Mobile, the problems were numerous and the customer service fell off a cliff.

Ahh, I did not realize Tracfone owns SIMple mobile... which I am using for the wife, and has the worst website in the history of websites. :loco:

Can you help me out with AT&T MVNOs? I need to give them a try to see what kind of coverage they have in my area. Unlimited Voice is the biggie, unlimited text is fine, but not a requirement. Minimal data is ok as well, as long is it is not a hard cap, 250mb before throttling is fine.

Net10 seems to have something like that for $50, but I would not mind a cheaper alternative for testing purposes. I wish I could just get an AT&T Straight Talk micro sim for a fair price. :(

AirVoice Wireless. $40 for unlimited calls/texts + 500MB of data. They have roaming. Data is a hardcap, but its twice what you said she typically uses.

Fuzion Mobile. $40 for unlimited calls/texts + 500MB of data. No roaming. Can buy more data if you run out.

Good2Go Mobile. $40 for unlimited calls/texts + 250MB of data. Roaming included. Can add data if you run out ($10 for an extra 500MB)

PureTalk USA. $43.95 for unlimited calls/texts + 1000MB of data. No roaming. Can add data if you run out ($10 for an extra 100MB)

Those are the AT&T MVNOs cheaper than Straight Talk. AirVoice seems like the best bet here because it includes roaming on T-mo and enough data.

I've asked a similar but not same question before.

What's the best idea f I have three basic phones where one needs unlimited texting (daughter), another needs a few more talk minutes (like 2k, for my MIL) and another that needs less than 100 minutes of talk and 100 texts (my son)?

all on the same carrier? Or can we split them up (might be cheaper)?

I guess it doesn't matter.
If you were to put an actual number on your daughters texts, what would it be?

Let's just say 9k. You know kids these days.

All together, on Ting for 3 phones ($18), 2000 minutes ($35), and 6000 texts ($11), it would run $67 total + taxes/local fees. You could up the minutes to 3000 if necessary, bumping the cost to $84 before taxes/fees.

Let me see what I can find individually as well.

Daughter: Kajeet (On Sprint) 60 mins + unlimited texts for $14.95. No roaming. Kajeet features special parental controls too.

MIL: Voyager Mobile (On Sprint) Unlimited minutes and nothing else for $17 a month. Add in unlimited texts and its $19 a month. No roaming.

Son: Chit Chat Mobile (On Sprint) 250 minutes, 4000 texts for $9.99 a month. Roaming is free.

Hope you have good Sprint coverage. These will all have taxes fees, so I'm not sure how much cheaper in practice it'll be than Ting, but the total pre-tax/fees is $41.94.

Website that does this is getting closer to launch. Not going to make my May goal, but hopefully before June is out it will be up and running full steam.

9K is insane.
Tell me about it. :loco:

Nice! I think I can work with that, thanks.

Hulk can you help me out here... Zip 33957... My current plan - 450 call minutes (I never use them all, but i suspect it's b/c of Verizon to Verizon or night calling)... unlimted Text and Unlimited Data -- I have an iPhone 4s on Verizon. I pay $84 after all taxes/fees are thrown in.

In a month or two, I'd like ot get a Nexus 4. However, I don't think that's going to be possible, b/c where I live you almost have to have Verizon. The others are brutally bad I have heard. I assume that the same limitations that the Nexus4 would have on Verizon apply to MVNO's???

Blend> I would stick with your current plan if it were me, you're not going to get that unlimited data anywhere else anymore. Maybe see if you can can and LTE phone to really take advantage of it ;) Galaxy S4 or iPhone 5 maybe?

How many minutes (including nights/weekends/mobile2mobile), texts, and data do you actually use? That is really the question. Info should be on your bill. I don't know if its possible with an iPhone, but on Android you can check your data usage history in the menu as well. I'll check out your coverage stuff now.ETA: Nexus 4 is not available for Verizon, Sprint, or any of their MVNOs. It doesn't run on CDMA and those networks do.

Thats the report from cellreception.com. Looks like Tmo is the worst coverage, but all 4 do attempt to cover your area.

Another site: http://www.rootmetrics.com/check-coverage/ Has Verizon with the best coverage, and AT&T, Sprint and T-mobile about the same. Incomplete data though.

You could always try an MVNO that offers free roaming to help you out (Tmobile roams on AT&T and vice versa, Sprint roams on Verizon and vice versa). Not all MVNOs offer free roaming, but several do.

Blend,

If you want the Nexus 4, in your area, the best two options are down to the following:

GoSmart Mobile (T-mobile's Network): $45 for unlimited minutes and texts, and 5GB of 3G speed data, unlimited 2G data afterwards. 3G speed implies a download rate of somewhere between .9 and 1 MB per second. They have free roaming on AT&T.

Solavei (T-mobile's Network): $49 for unlimited minutes and texts, and 4 GB 4G (HSPA+42) speed data, unlimited 2G data afterwards. 4G speed in this case implies a download rate of somewhere between 6 and 15 MB per second. I use this MVNO and typically have about 12 MBps download speeds, so about 12 times faster than GoSmart for $4 more. They have free roaming on AT&T too.

Both prices do not include local taxes and fees. If you're interested in Solavei, PM me or click the link in my sig. I supply free sim cards for them (they cost $9 otherwise). If the speed of the data doesn't matter much to you, go with GoSmart. If it does, go with Solavei. LTE is irrelevant when it comes to the Nexus4 since it doesn't have it. Personally, using it with Solavei has been fantastic for me.

If you can give me the finer grain details of what you need in practice, I may be able to find a couple of other options too.

What is a good cheap smart phone for Ting?? My wife and I both have old flip phones. She probably wants to keep hers as a feature phone (and I don't mind since she wont get into texting like crazy, and when she losses it they are cheaper to replace). I can go with the upgrade to a smart phone but have no idea what to get. I don't need the latest and greatest, just something that will work.

I'd recommend the Galaxy S2. They sell them new for approx $250. I think they are currently out of stock but should have them back within the next week or so. Use one of the links in post#1 and get $25 off to boot. Its a very good phone for that price.

My favorite thread of all time. And it isn't even close.

Bill for two lines on Ting came in this last month at $47. Coverage excellent. Customer service unparalleled. Obviously, wife and I aren't huge data hogs, but even if we were, we wouldn't come near the $180/mo we were paying.

Suck it T-Mobile.

ETA: Thanks, again, HULK.

T-Moblie has a 30 dollar a month 100 minute talk, unlimited text and data plan. Not as cheap as Ting, but hardly in the ATT/Verizon ridiculousness.

Crooked thiefs at TMobile. I can't find that deal, not offered on website. Not shocking. Inmates run that asylum top to bottom. But GL with them. You can sometimes ge service when near large buildings. Dropped calls are less of a nuisance when you have a backup landline in the house.

Any news on what MVNOs either now or in the future plan on supporting Windows Phones? I saw Ting says they plan on it. Anyone else?

https://ting.com/blog/device-update-htc-one-and-galaxy-s4-shipping-times-new-siis-and-refurb-airaves-inbound/ Windows PhoneWe’re still on track to offer Windows Phone devices from Samsung and HTC in late June early July, at or very nearly the same time as Sprint offers them up. There’s not a great deal more to say on the subject except that you might want to sign up for our Device Alert emails (bottom of this page, “Get Email Updates”) to ensure you get the latest device news as it hits.

This probably has already been asked so apologies in advance. If I have 3 phones/lines with Ting, and I choose the XXL (3000 minutes) bucket - is that for each phone/line (eg 3000X3=9000 minutes) or is that 3000 minutes cap for all 3 phones/lines collectively?

Everything collectively.

Any of the AT&T or T-mobile ones should, because its just about dropping a sim card into any GSM phone.

Its shared between the 3 lines.

Also, if you choose 3000 minutes and then use 2000, they only charge you for the 2000.

If you're using that many minutes though, maybe I can find you something cheaper. Post your zipcode, and the mins/text/data usage for each line individually and I'll take a crack at it.

I don't see it now, either, though it was there after the redesign a few weeks ago. Hulk, have you seen it recently or may it finally have been retired while I dragged my feet about whether to upgrade to smartphone?

Bottom of this page its there.

Thanks! They seem to hide it a little better with each iteration. I'll bookmark. If I do this, I am leaning toward getting unlocked iphone, now that it is supported, vs. Nexus. I am hoping 5s or 6 comes out and drops the price of the 5,though if the screen gets bigger, I'd probably still want to pay up for the new one. The 4" of the 5 is the smallest I'd do (vs 4, 4s)

Update: Problem was definitely me to some degree. I didn't fully understand the settings yet. Particularly the setting that kept turning on the 4G antenna every time I turned off the WiFi. I was able to barely touch the phone all day yesterday and the charge at the end of the day was still around 70%.

Zip is 22209. Would prefer to have unlimited talk & text - will use very little data.

Thanks for all your work on this HULK!

Situation: I'm on my parents plan, which I think is the 700 Family plan from ATT (I think 70 bucks). Add $20 for the 2 extra lines. We all 3 have iPhones, I have the old grandfathered unlimited for $30, they both have they 250MB for $15 a piece. None of us have texting. We are now eligible for new phones, which we each want updated iPhones. We also want to text now. My parents are in their late 60s and not good with change, so they are pretty much locked into using ATT. I figure the bill is $150 plus fees. She does get a 15% discount for her employer.

My wife has StraightTalk and is on the $45 unlimited with her iPhone. I think I got a $5 per month discount for autopay. My son is turning 13 and we want to get him a phone.

I'd like to upgrade to the iPhone 5 (not sure when the new one is coming out) and then give my wife the 4S and she can give the 3G to my son. I'd really like him to use the iPhone as wifi only (no data plan). I'd like to lower my parents bill while also getting texts for them. Also considering bringing my son onto my parents bill for the 10 additional line, but I'm not sure they will let that be an iPhone without a data plan.

What's the best scenario, with the only lock in being keeping my parents on ATT? Zip is 35244. Should I try to add my son to my parent's plan? Should I get a family plan for my own family (will have another son get a phone in 2 years). Is there an option to add a dumb phone to Straight Talk since my wife is already on?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
