Save $ on cell service -- Ting Mobile / Solavei (+ other MVNOs) (1 Viewer)

Black Dotted this thread a while ago and have been perusing off and on. Ready to bail on VZW. Currently with Verizon & off contract.

Current plan is Unlimited Data (averaging ~6GB) @ $50/mo,

700 Minutes (averaging ~200) @ $50/mo,

1000 texts (averaging ~500) @ $10/mo.

Access Fee $10

Miscl stuff $10

-------------------------------------------

- 15% VZW Gov't Employee Discount

Total $110ish/mo

Live in southern NJ 15mi Philly. Verizon coverage is excellent in my area. Not sure about the rest.

Thanks!

ETA: Also, interested in VOIP for home phone service as verizon wants a small fortune for this too. It was quasi reasonable until I dropped Verizon DSL for Comcast internet with the anticipation of ditching DirecTV also and needing the speed.
Question 1: Do you really need 6GB of data a month? Yikes.... I assume no wifi @ work or something?

Question 2: How is the coverage for the others in your region. I'm guessing they're all fine, but you should ask around to be sure.

Given that usage, I'm thinking unlimited on T-Mo is probably best for you.

I just moved and am looking to move carriers if it makes since. I'm currently out of contract at AT&T. My bill total is 72.41 per month for unlimited text (1200 avg), unlimited minutes (500 avg) and 3 GB data with 1 month rollover (2.75 GB avg).

My wife is also with AT&T, but is on a different plan and is still under contract.

Seems like a good plan, but I'm up for whatever if there is something better. Thoughts?
You like your coverage?

Go w/ Straight Talk or Net10 on AT&T coverage. Either $40 or $45. I believe that is for 5GB... ST doesn't have roaming, N10 does. So, basically what you have now with more data and less cost.

The coverage is okay. We moved to a newer neighborhood a little further out from the city, so none of the big 3 are very good out there.

Can I keep the same phone number? What phones are available for those?

Can I add a line for my wife later on once her contract expires?

Thanks HULK.

It is pre paid, you can do whatever you want with it.

P.S. Check out Cricket to... they have decent credits (like $100) for porting a number and refereeing new users ($25 each).

There is a throttle on the DL speeds, but it may very well be fast enough for you.

-Same #: Yup, you just port it when you sign up

-Any phone that uses a sim card, including your current phone

-Yes

Yup. DL speeds are capped @ 8 MBps. Which is fine unless you're streaming video.

First of all, thanks again Hulk!  Been on Ting since July 2013, my average bill is around $60 for 5 phones (Wife, Son#1, Son#2, MIL, SIL).  My phone is supplied through work.

Anyway, my wife and 2 sons have all have an iphone4.  My wife's is in good condition, but has issues charging quite often (says not supported).  Son #1 has a shattered back screen (In a case so no real impact).  Son #2 has a cracked screen on the front in 2 places.

Need new phones for them, mostly due to apps are not supported on iphone 4 for the boys.

Looking at getting them an iphone5c and/or iphone5s.  Anyone have any opinions? (Maybe I should post this in the iphone thread) 5c is lower in price, but better processor in 5s.  Trying to keep costs down.  iphone 6 and 6+ is just too much.  Looks like I can get 2 5c's and 1 5s for about $450 total on ebay, all in great condition.

Thanks for any input.

I'm sure it has been put up here earlier in the thread, but try Gazelle.com. I bought an iphone 5s for my mother there a little while ago, and she has had no problems with it (other than user errors, but we can't avoid those!!).

Thanks for the input.  I did look there, but finding much better deals on ebay.

I guess what I'm really asking is how long can I expect these 5c phones to last before they start being unusable.

I guess the difference would be buying from a store, and buying from some guy named Bob, who may or may not be selling a stolen iPhone. I might pay a little more for security like that.

Not sure about a 5c...

This is a good point, I was strictly looking at ebay stores, for a little more security.

Hey Hulk,

You recommended the Nexus 5. I've had it more than a year and it's an excellent phone. If I upgrade, larger screen is cool. But my main beef with the Nexus is the lame speaker and the terrible battery life. Do the newer iterations have better batteries or better sound?

Nexus 5 does not work with Verizon, right? Also, there's not a phone that will work with Verizon, but could then be used with Google Fi or maybe another GSM MVNO, right?

I've got about a year left on a Verizon contract, but I have a feeling my current phone is about to croak (2013 Moto X, makes static-y sounds while texting). As of right now, I'm looking to just get a back-up phone to carry me to the end of my Verizon contract (probably used 2nd gen Moto X), at which time I might be looking to switch carriers.

Saw this today. Might be a good deal.

Cricket Wireless Spreads Smiles with New $70 Unlimited Plan on a Bigger Network than T-Mobile

ATLANTA, April 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Calling all smart mobile phone customers! If you're looking for great coverage with simple plans, all-in monthly rates, and the freedom of no annual contract, we've got you covered. Cricket Wireless is taking a wrecking ball to long-term contracts and making everyone smarter and happier with an unlimited plan on a network that is bigger than T-Mobile's. The Cricket Unlimited Plan includes all the talk, text and data you can use on one smartphone line for $70/month.1 And after a $5 Auto Pay credit, it's only $65/month.2 Yes, T-Mobile customers, that price already includes the monthly taxes and fees.

T-Mobile charges at least $25 more each month for its Simple Choice Unlimited Plan for one smartphone line on a smaller 4G LTE network. Very Uncool. Plus if you join the Cricket Nation now, we'll give you a $100 bill credit when you switch from T-Mobile.3

"We wake up every morning focused on giving our customers what they want – more network, a great customer experience, and better plans for less money," said John Dwyer, president of Cricket Wireless. "Cricket has over 275,000 more square miles of 4G LTE coverage than T-Mobile. And our unlimited plan for a single smartphone line is $25 less a month. More coverage for a lot less money – two great reasons to make the switch."

The new unlimited plan from Cricket Wireless is available beginning April 17, 2016. Cricket provides more 4G LTE coverage nationwide than T-Mobile, MetroPCS, Sprint or Boost*, and everyday customer benefits include:

No annual contracts
Unlimited talk, text and data access – in and between the U.S., Mexico and Canada – for the Unlimited, Pro and Smart plans.
Monthly taxes and fees always included in plan price
Access to Cricket Rewards, the only customer loyalty program of its kind offered in the prepaid industry
With the recent addition of Aaron's and other retail distribution relationships, Cricket Wireless is now available in more than 12,000 outlets across the country, cementing its position as one of the fastest growing prepaid wireless companies in the U.S. Find a Cricket Wireless store or other retailer near you, or purchase online, at www.cricketwireless.com.

I upgraded from the 5 to the 6 when the 6p came out.  Much better battery life (and it has quick charge, which is amazeballs).  It is enormous though, so you need giant hands like myself or Otis to hold it properly.  Sound is also drastically improved.  I can't speak to the 6p, but I think a few others can

I really hate Cricket.

They throttle their LTE @ 8 MBps.  Which is slower than HSPA+ by a fair margin.  So, yeah, its AT&T's network, but really, even though they plaster the word LTE through their ad copy and it is indeed that technology, it isn't the speed.  Comparing it to T-Mobile's LTE, which is 3 times faster easily, is not a fair or direct comparison.  Stuff like this bugs me beyond belieft.

Interesting. Screaming everywhere how they are better than T-Mobile, when in fact they are not that good. People who would need unlimited data are likely to want faster than 8Mbps.

So i have been been connected with Google fit for a full month now.  I could not be happier.  Went from ting to fit.  Coverage is very good in socal/norcal where I live. Blazing fast speeds and very good cell coverage.

Cool. I don't have giant hands, but I sure am intrigued by the upgrades.

I also love the fact that I can use my Nexus 6/Project Fi overseas with cheap-### rates. Unlimited texting and Data is still $10 a month no matter where you are, even though you're knocked down to 3G/256 kbps.

I'm planning a Rome trip in March 2018, so this will be handy for sure.

Hey Hulk. Looking for a phone & service for my father in law. He has a Verizon flip phone now but wants to upgrade to a smart phone as cheaply as possible. Not under contract with VZW. Uses maybe 30 mins of talk time and zero texts.  I would expect his data usage to be pretty minimal too. Likes the idea of having the web at his fingertips if he's sitting in a tree stand or on a dock with 3 lines in the water.  but wants to do it cheaply. Zip is 08094

ETA- He mentioned Tracfone to me. I think he likes the "Rollover" aspect for minutes. Not sure what the practical difference is between rolling over ans payig for what you use, but that was his rationale.

Look at Consumer Cellular.  It uses AT&T's network and will have plans that fit his usage for low prices.

I asked you probably a couple of years ago in this thread, but am wondering if anything has changed...

Only Verizon has reliable coverage at my house.  What are my choices on Verizon's network?

This was the big selling point for me. Hated not being able to use my phone (at a reasonable price) while traveling.

How is t-mobile outside of your house?  I know they have some signal booster / wifi-calling options that could help indoors.

If anyone wants to try ting I have an unlocked HTC one m8 that i will sell for cheap.  Basically new, I switched to project Fi.

Nothing but Verizon is reliable at my house.  When people with other providers visit, they're irritated.

Hulk,

Can you tell me which discount carriers (other than Project Fi) I can use a Nexus 6p on? I need more talk/text than I do data since I'm on wifi so much.

This is unreal. I tried to switch to Cricket today, and they won't allow me to port in my existing number from Project Fi. They say it's their "policy." What is this about? They said the only way I can set up service through Cricket is to do it with a brand-new number. And, gee, why wouldn't I want to do that?

So am I just stuck here with Project Fi? I can't find anywhere else to go.

So for one of you smart phone gus out there, I am selling a phone on Ting's resale forum.  Someone just emailed asking for the IMEI number from the phone.  He wants to check if it is a GSM or CDMA phone.  I let him know it is GSM.  Any reason to give him the IMEI number if pushed?

Isn't your Project Fi number a google voice number anyway?  If it is, just get a new number from cricket (oh, and use my referral link  ;) ;) ) install the Google Voice app, and you can keep using it for all calls.

Once you go to Project Fi, you lose your Google voice number if you don't use it. I didn't use it when I enrolled with Project Fi. I used my existing cel number at the time. So I no longer have a Google Voice number.

Can you port your Fi number to GV?

ETA:  Maybe give this a try?  https://support.google.com/fi/answer/6079398?hl=en

Code:
How to transfer your number
Your Project Fi service will stay active until we know your number is safely with your new carrier. To transfer your number:

Cancel your service on the Project Fi website (see below).
We’ll provide you with the "port out" account number & password.
Tip: Once you cancel, you'll see a notification with this info in the Project Fi app and website if you need to access it later.
Share your port out info with your new carrier.
Tip: If your new carrier requests your name and address, use the name associated with the Google Account you use with Project Fi, and your Project Fi Service address.
Your number will be transferred once your new carrier has verified your info with Project Fi, and then we'll close your account.

I don't know what the risk is, but I know when my step daughter bought a phone via ebay, many of the listings had the IMEI number listed.

Can't you send him a picture of the phone with the GSM chip part way out? That way he can see it's not a CDMA.

Did a quick google and saw this on eBay...they suggest not giving IEMI until payment received.

I found a free online place that checked IEMI's to ensure they were clean.  Sent him a screen shot without the IEMI number on there.  Have not heard back from him.  I think it was a scam.  Thanks for the replies.

Help.

I'm considering buying an iPhone 4s from Woot right now - decent price and refurbished and all that.  But I can't tell if it's going to work with the Ting network.  It's unlocked, but it seems unclear - anyone bought a basic unlocked iPhone 4s and used it with Ting?  Or just a Sprint branded one?

I would think something from Woot would clearly be unlocked.  Why is it clear? I would think the most you would need would be to buy one of Ting's SIM cards.  I have two iPhone 4's on Ting for my boys, but I bought from Ting, so I had no issues.

Yeah, it's unlocked but I've read on the Ting site of people having function difficulty with AT&T phones brought over to ting, including iPhones. I guess they have different model numbers, and something's different about them.  I went ahead and just bought a 5s from Ting. Worst thing I can do is take a chance on a gift for the wife and have it not work.

Got mine on Ebay, but from a dealer.  Just bought 3 iphone5s's in the last month for both boys and the wife.  I bought sprint phones though cause the whole unlocked phones was confusing to me as well.  I got a great deal on the 2 I bought for my boys.  $260 for 2 iphone5s's which were in excellent condition with chargers etc shipped free.  Really pleased.

Anyone have any insight into ROK Mobile?

I'd like to stay with the Verizon Network, but am looking for a better data option than my current 3G plan.

Might get bumped off my brothers family plan with Sprint

i have a regular voice only phone on ting that I only use 0-100 min on but might have to move my wife's phone over to it

is it still a pretty good price for a smartphone vs getting her own plan through Verizon or someone else?  I'm currently on an employer paid plan but that could end changing as well, so not sure if want to put my own smartphone on ting or get us a combined plan where I can get a subsidized phone rather than have to shell out $ for my own smartphone

also if potentially need international voice and data from time to time, so not sure how they are for that

We've been on a family plan with my FIL forever. So I've never had to shop for service, just paid my portion of the bill and moved on.

My work is now offering a $45 phone stipend that I want to take advantage of. Project Fi sounds good. I can get voice/text and 2 gb of data for $40/mo.  The Nexus phones look decent. I do have an iPhone 4s but it's an ATT model. Are there good cheap options where I can use that phone?

TIA

Also look at Consumer Cellular.  Honestly, I kinda hate Cricket because they advertise "LTE" but they cap the speed of the LTE they give, so it's really HSPA+ fast, not LTE fast.  Seems a bit bait and switchy to me.

As an aside, my database has completely fallen behind.  I've just been too busy to keep up with it.  I kinda doubt I will ever launch the site I wanted to way back when.
