Say goodbye to Hollywood (1 Viewer)

Say the old guys who still like the "feel" of an actual newspaper...
Just finished reading mine.

Nothing like a crowded theater laughing hysterically at a comedy. Animal House when I was a kid. Superbad more recently. Not the same at home. Same thing with horror movies. Typical dramas less of a difference. I’m not a a big Marvel guy, but home setups can rock the house and have for years. I remember getting Jurassic Park on Laser Disc years ago and the whole house shook with each step.  The flip side is everyone is fatigued staying in the freakin house. They want to get out. I don’t mind the cost differential.

I spent decent money to have a nice basement setup.  I'd say I'm a high mid tier system, spent money on a screen and it's been worth it.

Sure it's not exactly the same but I get it cranking just fine :)

i enjoy movies a lot, not necessarily the theater

We have an HD protector in the basement with a wicked surround system. The image is about 9' wide and 6' tall. Great for movies and sports.

Still not the same as going to the theater.

The new digital projectors at theaters are so high resolution you can't see a pixel. Now, you can beat the theater sound system at home, but not the image quality. Then there's the "group excitement" thing when ie Avengers starts.  I could live without theaters, but quality of american experience goes down a notch, imo

The theater is nice when you get the nice reclining seats and there aren't many (or any) other people.

Otherwise it sucks when there are a lot of people.  Pretty much ruins it.

I also like to be able to stop the movie when I want/need to.

I am in the camp of movies at home are better, however, I do like the theater experience once in a while.  Matinees are nice where I live.  There is usually nobody there.

If movie theaters all died, I really wouldn't care much.

Funny- more people make the movie for me. I enjoy the communal aspect of laughing, ohhhing and ahhhhing or even crying with people.

It's more like people giggling, crinkling bags, hearing the candy boxes shake, distracting lights from phones and phones ringing, people walking around, and just in general people not paying enough attention to the damn movie.

Weird, I went to a lot of movies in 2019 and that was never an issue

Has anyone made the point that if you like loud blockbuster type movies maybe your answer is different than a romantic comedy type (or whatever)

I used to go tot he movies a lot (pre-COVID) and very much miss it.

You can't get as engrossed in a movie at home as you can at the theater. Or at least, I can't. There are too many distractions.
I'm not bad about putting down my phone and ignoring distractions at home to watch a decent movie, but my wife just can't.  She always has to have her phone in her hand and playing some mindless game while watching tv or a movie, even if she isn't texting.  She pays attention to the show, but isn't even looking at the tv screen more than 50% of the time, so I'm sure she misses stuff, and I feel the need to make sure she's watching when something visually important is going on.

So I guess you can say that there are too many distractions for me at home, as my wife being distracted distracts me.

I miss the movie experience quite a bit. Comedies are never funnier than at a theater full of people laughing. Action movies never look or sound better than in a theater. Ford v Ferrari isn’t even the same movie at home vs the theater.

Totally agree with these comments.  I still don't think I've ever laughed as hard at a movie as I did the first time I saw The Naked Gun, and I am sure seeing it in a packed theater with hundreds of others who were laughing the whole time helped a lot.  And certain moments are made for seeing in a crowded theater. My brother and I saw There's Something About Mary the weekend it came out, and I still remember the entire audience gasping in unison when we saw the brief shot of the frank and beans stuck in the zipper.  That collective gasp from all of us was awesome.
