Schefter says Buffalo/NYG/Oakland interest in Leinart deal (1 Viewer)

BUF and NY want to improve backup situation. OAK, well, chalk it up to Crazy Al remembering what he saw five years ago.

It's not just Whisenhunt. The whole league sees Leinart for what he is - I look forward to not having to vehemently warn people off of investing in him.

So you put LHUCKS on ignore?

Why wouldn't TB be interested? They don't have much behind Freeman. I could also see teams like KC, TEN, HOU, DET, WAS, SD wanting to upgrade their backup positions IF they could renegotiate his contract.

Being the backup in Buffalo - behind Trent Edwards - is basically half a step from not being in the league at all.

I don't know why any team would trade for him. He's due a whole lot of money next year. What team would want to pay Leinart $11M next year?

This smells of the Cardinals trying to drum up interest. I think it's MUCH more likely that the Cards will be forced to cut him and some team will sign him to be the #2 or even the #3.

I wish the Bengals would take a shot with him as a backup to Palmer......two USC guys which i hate, but maybe they will be able to mesh. They dont have much insurance other than O'Sullivan :goodposting:

Tampa's perfectly content with Josh Johnson as a back-up. He's even building up some buzz as one of the more tradable #2 QBs.

As a Buffalo fan, I bet you sure are hoping this is the case. You sure as heck don't want him there.

As a Giants fan, I'd be happier rolling with Rhett Bomar as the backup.

I can't imagine any team would actually want him. No talent + attitude problem and you got yourself a Fred Ex.

Ironic if its Buffalo because a Buffalo team which needed good quarterbacking passed on him with the 8th pick 4 years ago. I'm with Grove Diesel and probably other Bills fans that would rather wait a year and then take our chances with Locker, Mallett or Luck.

I think this thread is the coup de grâce for LHUCKS.

20% of the FBG newsletter this morning is dedicated to the AZ QB situation? Really? 1 article on Anderson and 3 on Leinart. :excited:

Leinart wants to be a starter and feels "hes done enough in this league" according to Jay Glazer.
Glazer (on this morning's Dan Patrick show) also said that teams have actually called him as a reference on Leinart for their trade considerations - and that none of the three teams (Buf, Nyg, Oak) mentioned by Schefter were among those who called. He wouldn't say who did call.

My guess is Leinart to the Giants after he gets cut. They have nothing at QB if Eli goes down.

0% chance he ends up in Buffalo. He'd actually be a worse back-up that what they have in Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I'm much, much more interested in how the Cardinals plan to replace Leinart. I would not be surprised if they trade for Tarvaris Jackson, who had a big game against them in 2008. He's the guy it makes most sense for the Vikes to trade away with Favre back. If the Vikes trade Rosenfels, then they have only Webb at QB under contract for 2011. Anyway, knowing who the Cardinals are targetting as replacement has much bigger FF significance than where Leinart may be a backup next.

RUMORS today on local radio had the Cards maybe getting Batch from Pittsburgh somehow.
That would actually make sense. Leinart gets to be the starter for Pittsburg (he didn't say for how long) until Roethlisberger gets back from suspension. He can be a game manager as evidenced by his preseason play. Maybe the Steelers go back to smash mouth football with Mendenhall for a few games. I doubt they would want to take on Leinarts salary but who knows.

Giants trade for Cardinals' Matt Leinart seems unlikely

The Giants are one of three teams that have spoken with the Cardinals about quarterback Matt Leinart, according to an ESPN report. However, indications are a trade for Leinart in the wake of Jim Sorgi being placed on injured reserve is unlikely.

The Giants have certainly explored their options to replace Sorgi or at least provide another backup along with Rhett Bomar. It's likely they've spoken with a few teams, including the Jets about Kellen Clemens, who opted to take a pay cut to remain with the team that drafted him. It also wouldn't be surprising if the Giants held discussions with the Vikings about Sage Rosenfels or with the Dolphins in regard to Tyler Thigpen.

But the possibility of adding Leinart behind Eli Manning doesn't sound as if it's close to happening. Leinart is owed over $10 million in base salary alone the next two seasons and the Giants would seemingly be reluctant to part with valuable draft picks.

"It depends on what the availability and what the cost is," Giants coach Tom Coughin said Tuesday when asked about adding a veteran. "I’m not saying we’re doing that, but our people are not caught by surprise by this. Our guys have been working on this for a couple of weeks."

Saturday, when final cuts are due, could be an interesting day. Stay tuned.

Giants aren't interested in a trade. If Leinart gets cut, then there would be interest.

What's really funny is that sitting for two years and seeing it done right hasn't changed his tune one bit. He might as well have trotted out the "ride and die with me line" from his rookie(sophomore?) season.

So Leinart is gonna go to Pittsburgh, learn the system in a week, and supplant Leftwich as the starting QB until Big Ben gets back? What exactly have you seen in Leinart that makes you think for a minute that could actually happen?

umm, no. Leinart is not starting for anybody in week 1, certainly not the Steelers. they have three QBs. Just because Batch would go to the Cards doesnt mean Leinart would come back. that would mean Leinart would be cut.

AZ getting Batch needn't involve Leinart. Batch is on the toster bubble as it is.IF Leinart comes to Pitt somehow, it won't be as a starter IMO. He's definitely not a plug-n-play qb option. Very few are.

I was under the impression that this was a trade thread regarding Leinart. I wasn't suggesting if (BIG IF) he was dealt to Pit in some way that he would start right away. I personally hope the guy goes back to beer pong and dating ugly heiresses and leave the football to someone who actually cares.

From roto today. Pure speculation, but the Batch fires are stoking:

Charlie Batch has played just 17 snaps this preseason, and has not taken a single training camp rep with the Steelers' second- or first-team offense.Batch still mustered 44 yards and a TD on four pass attempts in Sunday's preseason game. The Cardinals should keep close tabs on Batch's situation. Pittsburgh may opt to carry only Byron Leftwich and Dennis Dixon until Ben Roethlisberger returns, making Batch a free agent. The 35-year-old doesn't have a whole lot left, but is familiar with Arizona's coaching staff and would figure to be a more game-ready alternative to Derek Anderson

I don't really get this. I thought part of the reason Leinart stands to be cut was because the Cards didn't want to cut either Skelton or Hall, and speculation was that neither would make it to the practice squad.

He's actually due $7.4M next year. Of course, he'll never see any of that.

exactamundo! my mistake. I should have said "could start if he pulled his head out of his ####"

-I think Schefter may have screwed the pooch on this one. All three teams are adamantly denying that they have interest in Leinart right now. Schefter fired back at the Bills by saying that he has two credible sources that told him that the Bills had ongoing talks with Arizona earlier this summer.

But that's completely different than the Bills expressing interest right now. Just because they had interest in June doesn't mean that they have interest a week before the season starts. And Schefter clearly implied that the interest was current and made it sound as if these teams contacted the Cardinals recently due to the demotion and all of that stuff going on.

It really comes across as either Adam Schefter trying to make a bigger story by using old information without bothering to see if it was still valid, or Schefter just outright carrying water for the Cards and trying to drum up a trade market. Poor showing by Schefter IMO. Especially trying to justify his current report and basically calling the Bills liars when his info is old and misleading.vxz

I don't get it either. I know Wiz does not like starting rookies so maybe he is looking for some veteran backup. But like you, I'm not sure of what to make of the rumor.

This guy doesn't live in reality. He seems to think he has gotten a raw deal. The job was his to lose, twice. I don't think he could beat out Trent Edwards.
