Sciatica pain.....what are my options? (1 Viewer)

I've had back trouble in and off for roughly 10 years. I had been pain free for about a year but over the last 2 weeks my sciatica has been getting pretty bad.

pain from my right lower back, down my thigh and down to my upper calf.

are there any treatment options besides hard liquor?

has anyone been able to beat this problem for good?

One of my drinking buddies is a chiro. Sciatica patients make up over half of his business. When I had an issue a while back, he recommended doing the "cobra" yoga pose. It worked for me, so far.

*disclaimer. I saw him a couple months later and mentioned that the cobra had worked wonders for my sciatica. He seemed rather surprised to hear it.

I lost about 5 lbs and the pain went away.  I now use that as my Human Nervous System Automated Alert that it's time to lose weight.   :porked:

I have packed on a few el bees since moving to texas

not many healthy options down here when I grab lunch during the work week

I pulled the muscle years ago

ive never had spinal pain
The L4 nerve is compressed/pinched that is causing the pain to radiate down your ### into your leg.  If the pain goes to your foot that means the S1 nerve is also compressed.  We do around 15 back surgeries a day where I work.  Most of them are due to guys have sciatic pain.  Most of those guys are overweight.  Most back pain will go away with weight loss and exercise.   Your body will tell you if you need surgery or not when you get to the point you can't sit, stand, lay down, sleep, eat, and are just basically miserable all the time.

On a serious note if your genitalia go numb you need to go the ER immediately.    good luck

What does it mean if my junk goes numb?

You could lose the ability to control your bladder and bowels.  Also, can affect walking and control of your legs.
Forgot about the poop part. My doc got super serious about it....like don't even think about it, get to the ER as fast as you can. It's like heart attack serious. And they can't fix it. Ever.

You sure do have a lot of problems. Maybe you should spend less time online. Or maybe you're just an attention whore.

Had it for a year until I could not take it anymore..at the end I could not get in and out of a car, stand up fast, or cough and sneeze without being in agony. Tried everything, chiros, injections nothing worked.  My L-5 was pinching a nerve and it had to be trimmed with a laminectomy.  The fay after my pain was totally gone other than the surgery pain.  In 3 months I was playing hockey, softball and lifting weights.

Also, possibly* helpful is the bridge, lying on your back with the knees bent, flex your stomach and lift the butt until you're in a straight line from shoulders to knees. Hold for 3-5 and repeat for at least 5 reps. Some days I can't even do the first one without help from the arms, but after getting 1 or 2 out of the way, everything loosens up enough to do the rest without pain and pretty easy.

* I am not a doctor
I'm going to give it a shot when it hurts

i had a couple shots of Jameson and a few shiners so I'm not feeling any pain right now

Unfortunately booze is about the only effective pain killer for nerve pain, I've tried all sorts of different high level narcotics (think oxy) without any impact on the pain. Booze just makes everything numb, even my Doc commented on that.

Doctor recommended boozing?

go on

I used to work for Pfizer at the factory where they made the active ingredient for gabapentin (trade name was Neurontin, not sure if it's still around).  I would imagine it has gone generic by now.  I think it was originally for epilepsy, but was found to be more useful for nerve pain from things like shingles or sciatica - you could ask your doc about it.

ETA: We're getting old in here - second time I've mentioned that already this winter, after not thinking of it for 10 years.

The pain has spread across my entire lower back

some days it's really bad and others quite mild. I've been laying a couple hours a night on a heating pad

i just got some brief pain in my right testicle.

do I need to go to the hospital?

tried this weird cool trick last night and it worked.

1. take your computer/laptop/main source of internet connection to a bridge

2. throw it off

should see results immediately.

Another option can be a Medial Branch Block.

Essentially, you get some shots that deaden the nerves.  It can last 3 months...or 6 months...or years.  But when it works, it works great.

And if it works, and sometimes it does not for some people, you can have it redone if/when it wears off.  If it works for you once, it'll work for you again.

Stop using heat.  Use ice instead.  And ibuprofen, 600mg every 8 hours that you're in pain.  And booze as you like.

Here's a bunch of exercises that look good.  I was prescribed many of these when I got PT for a herniated disc.  In particular, standing hamstring stretch, pelvic tilts, cat & camel, and "superman" arm and leg extensions were great.  I dodged the knife and you should do everything you can to do the same.  The success rate of that disc surgery is discouragingly low.

What's wrong with heat?

I’ve had lower back issues for six months which seeemed they were getting better after getting an inversion table and going to PT.  Then today, out of the blue, I was walking to work and my sciatica kicked in like I had never felt it.  It feels like my entire leg and ### are constantly cramping   Not sure what set it off today other than the fact it was 11 degrees when I got out of the car and I was rushing to work to get out of the cold    It just shot up right at Times Square

this really sucks
