A very good read. First thing I wondered was what you thought of Sporting News' rankings. Put me in the "finds their rankings indefensible" category, but like you, love that they mention more players. This is more important to me than their rankings.
I do wonder why you didn't also rank PFW's draft guide mag.

Great article! I have seen them all with the exception of Athlon's and would say that Lindy's is the best. I would have liked to seen you review Street & Smith's as well as PFW. I would say PFW is my second favorite. One thing I don't like about Lindy's is the point grade system. No where in the magazine does it explain this grading scale. Am I just missing it?
The few places I stopped to stock up for the article did not carry the PFW guide, sorry to disappoint. Ill track it down this week and add it to the review.

Great stuff. Taking all my ideas, lol.
All of them are worthwhile as at least interesting sidebars. I personally liked Lindy's the best, and cared the least for Athlon (surprise), but imo, there's not a clear winner. None of them are complete wastes of time or reasons to buy the mag in and of themselves.

By and large I'm a fan of the sporting news' draft guide but the major problem I have with it is its hard to find and I live in a college town where football is king so you'd think it would be easy to find. In fact the year vick, brees LT, and deuce came out I couldn't find their guide until about a week before the draft! All of that is to say I bought Lindy's this year since I couldn't find TSN's and was rather impressived. Very similar format between the two and I wonder what that's about tho'. BTW flipping through Athalon I could tell that wasn't the mag for me but I didn't realize it sucked so much. Nice article bloom

Not the magazine. You can download (for $20) the complete draft preview (different from the Guide, which is the magazine), which is excellent. Nawrocki is good, though no Buschbaum (but who is?)Of all the draft publications available, the PFW Draft Preview is the best. Couple that with NFLDG and Wildman online, and you'll never need anything else.

Bloom this was a good read (as it appears all of the stuff at NFLDraftGuys is). I was wondering if you or anyone else could comment on SportsWeekly's draft guide? My understanding is that they are owned/operated by USAToday. I am not sure what the cost is but I was wondering if it would be worth picking up.

There is not enough time in the day for me to do everything I want to be doing right now. I still want to review PFW and Street and Smiths, but the time for that be relevant is quickly passing. USA today picks up their stuff from Sports Xchange, I believe (Rob Rang), so it probably overlaps with Lindy's - but don't quote me on that before I can confirm it.

I spent about 2 hours in the bookstore a few weeks ago reading all the mags and this is the one I bought. Now that I read it cover to cover, I am impressed with it. I didn't agree with some of the rankings, but I did like most of what they had. The detailed reports on players was very well done IMO; much better than ESPNs and Sporting News for sure.

I picked up the SportsWeekly's draft guide and for what it costs I think it is pretty good. At $4.95 and 48 pages (though the pages are larger than most magazines) it seems to have some good information and depth. The other thing that I like is it appears to have been published sometime after March 29 which makes it a bit more current then most draft guides. The player reviews are good (in terms of information) and they seem to be in line with most of what I have read elsewhere. The team needs reviews are good and because it is published later than most seem to cover more of the free agent/trade action that has taken place in the off-season.
Overall, if you looking for a decent read for your money I think you could do worse than taking a look at the SportsWeekly's draft guide.

Have found copies of the Sporting News guide and the ESPN one locally and picked up copies of both. Concur that SN has some rankings that are far different than anywhere else I've looked which, if nothing else, really makes you look at a player and see if there is something that they're seeing that nobody else is. ESPN has some nice features like you mentioned but there was one single thing that really bugged me. If you are going to have an inset in the section on QB's that attempts to demonstrate that the two most important indicators of NFL success for the position is the completion percentage and the number of starts, you might want to make sure and include these "incredibly vital" pieces of information for each player. It just seems ridiculous to tout two pieces of data that would be easy include as the most important indicators of success and then not use them as a criteria for evaluation.
