This is a pretty interesting article about how the problem of scurvy was solved in the 15th century, stayed solved through the 18th century, then people became stupid, made a bunch of incorrect assumptions about why the established solutions worked, came up with "better" (read: ineffective) solutions based on those assumptions, and scurvy became a real problem again into the 20th century before it was actually solved again.
