SD Rookie LB Butler tears Achilles Tendon (1 Viewer)

PER ROTOWORLD - Charger Rookie LB Donald Butler tore his Achilles Tendon today & will be placed on IR for 2010....

First Edds (Miami) with his torn ACL & now Butler. The "mid-level" rookie LB's are having rough camps. :(

Makes me wonder how many rookies that went on IR before the season began; were able to come back and have success in the NFL (or fantasy for that matter)? Can anyone think of any rookies that went down very early the first year and had nice careers? It seems like the odds are really stacked against you as you weren't even able to establish yourself. Hopefully, he will be given a chance since he will have plenty of re-hab time and not end up a life long special teamer???

Off the top of my head, Poszluzny got hurt in the second or third game of his rookie year and missed the season on IR. He's turned out pretty good. I know it's not exactly what you asked (IR before the season), but it's a recent example that's similar.

Good call. Not saying it's inconsequential, but Posluszny had a broken arm, though, right? I would think that's an easier recovery than an Achilles... :lmao:

That sucks. I had high hopes for him.

Guess we're back to the same rotation from last year in San Diego.

Chad Greenway missed his rookie season with a torn ACL and has been a very good LB for the Vikings.
This is encouraging... :goodposting: (Although I worry that there's probably something to be said for Greenway's 1st round pedigree vs. Butler's 3rd in a case like this, if for no other reason than $$$...)
I'm not concerned with Butler's pedigree; I'm worried about Butler's injury being a torn Achilles. That is much worse to me. At least A.J. Edds (not in Butler's class) tore an ACL. This is why I'm closely watching NE LB Tyrone McKenzie this summer. He tore his ACL last summer. I cannot think of a LB off the top of my head who tore an Achilles at all, let alone a rookie. I'm sure there have been some, but none come to mind.

Takeo SpikesSam CowartLavar Arringtonare the three that come immediately to mind for me. they were never really the same afterwards.

I'm not sure about Poz but the first name that comes to mind of a rookie LB going down early in his career but then go onto having a great career is Clay Mathews Senior who also broke his arm in a preseason game and landed on IR his rook season but then played in over 200 consecutive games and was the best LB in Browns history IMHO.Butler is a guy that interests me and this is not a positive incident but more than anything it could slide him under the radar of most people for next year.My advice would be to keep tabs on him for next year.He could wind up being a very inexpensive flyer who turns into a great bargain.

also wondering why he hasn't been placed on IR. Just guessing, but I haven't been able to find where he had surgery on it.. maybe they are waiting to see if it heals on its own? and if it doens't then he'll opt for surgery????

I did find this link that said he WAS put on IR... not sure what the official NFL site is for IR though... http://newsday.sportsdirectinc.com/footbal...y/injuries.html

Edit 2: Just found this on a Bolts message board... No idea if it's true though:

a player with less than four years accrued cannot be placed directly on IR until the 30th of the month (this year thats the date, but the date usually falls around the 4th presseason game every year). The only way to put a player with less than four years accrued onto IR is to waive him, and then claim him and IR him if and only if he clears waivers. Usually injured players are not claimed on waivers, but sometimes they are so it would stupid to risk it. An example is former Bronco safety now Patriot Josh Reed. This rule was implemented to stop teams from using IR to stash young talent.

The above is true. It's similar to what happened with Jordon Dizon of the Lions....except the Lions exposed Dizon to waivers. Obviously, the Chargers can't do that with Butler. Below is the explanation about Dizon:

Link

There have been a lot of questions lately about the status of linebacker Jordon Dizon who, according to reports, was waived by the Detroit Lions after he had suffered a season-ending knee injury.

That's true, but a little misleading.

Because Dizon, who is an unvested veteran, got hurt before the 75-man cut (which is coming up next week) and the Lions wanted to fill his roster spot, the Lions had to expose Dizon to waivers. He cleared waivers and is now back with the Lions. The Lions had the option of waiting until after the 75-man cut to place Dizon on injured reserve without exposing him to the waiver wire.

If Dizon had been a vested veteran (more than four years of service), he would've gone to the IR list immediately.

Hmm. Rookies A.J. Edds (08/04), Kerry Meier(08/20), and Ben Tate are on IR but I did read that about the 75 man cut date but wonder why no team wanted to claim those guys. Last year the Jags claimed Browns 6th round cb Don Carey when they put him on IR before the date came.
