**Seahawks at Lions** (-4.5, 47) (1 Viewer)

It's the What Are You game
  • we think the Lions are good
  • we thought the Seahawks were good
Lions played well but they left a lot of meat on the bone; 11 missed tackles, communication issues on the back end, decent pressure but zero sacks.

Seattle looked terrible in coverage (Riq Wollen was still OK but everyone else got torched - PFF graded them 32nd) and they lost both their starting OTs.

Detroit's offense did enough but they were not crisp in the passing game. OL was outstanding both in pass pro and in run blocking.

Seattle managed only 180 yards total offense; 85 rushing and 95 net passing. But they still have a great trio of WR and K9 is an outstanding runner.

This is third year in a row playing each other, and the Seahawks have posted 500 yards rushing and 99 points in the last two meetings.

Rams did not run inside zone even once. Strictly power, gap scheme and duo - which is similar to how Ben Johnson's run game is setup (their fav play is probably counter.)

Detroit only blitzed 5 times versus Mahomes; they had the 2nd highest blitz percentage on 3rd & long last season.

Both teams have outstanding Special Teams, but Detroit is now missing it's KR and punt coverage gunner (Dorsey.) Detroit had the #1 ST unit in the league in 2022 but their PK is suspect outside of 45.
  • DET injuries: starting LT Taylor Decker will miss the game (ankle), CB Emmanuel Moseley (hamstring) had another setback, DT Josh Paschal (knee) and CB Khalil Dorsey both went on IR
  • SEA injuries: RT went on IR, LT will miss this week (his replacement was a starter v Detroit a year ago), rookie ED Mike Morris & S Jamal Adams are out, Boye Mafe and Devin Bush are questIonable. Looks like 5th overall pick Devon Witherspoon will make his debut. Edge Frank Clark is also out.
Detroit has a top 3 OL but are missing their veteran leader. Expect Penei Sewll to **** [shift] to LT and some combination on the right side: either Hal Vaitai slides out to RT and veteran Graham Glasgow (their best reserve OL) plays RG, or Big V stays at RG - where he earned the 2nd highest grade in the NFL in the opener - and swing tackle Matt Nelson makes his 12th career start. Whatever they decide to roll with I don't expect the impact to be significant. In the 35 games of the Campbell era, their starting OL unit has one game (last week) playing together; literally someone is always hurt, and they cross train their OL to play multiple positions. They always find a way, and Settle's DL lacks playmakers.

Seattle has a bottom 3 OL, but C Evan Brown (12 game starts a year ago at 3 positions for Detroit) graded out 77.0 last week and was the only OL who didn't allow a pressure. Their LG is a good run blocker.

On defense, the Seahawks play a 4-3 with 3-4 personnel on the field. The NT lines up over center as a 1-tech and both Edge rushers come wide from outside the OT, with one LB playing Jack and blitzing. ILB Bobby Wagner graded out 90+ in run defense week 1 but sub-50 in coverage. Their defensive backfield should be a strength but outside of the RCB they had a lot of issues Week 1.

Detroit has four significant rookies contributing, two starting and two playing significant roles. HB Jahmyr Gibbs played only 19 snaps week 1 but should see an uptick in usage and utilization. TE Sam LaPorta dominated snaps (83%) while catching all 5 of his targets. Slot CB Brian Branch led the team in coverage grade, tackling grade and had a pick 6 in his debut.

MLB Jack Campbell rotates with Derrick Barnes (mostly a run stopper) and Malcolm Rodriguez (strictly coverage v KCC) and is both an effective run stopper and outstanding in coverage (great PBU on a WR last week.) Alex Anzalone has shifted from Mike to Will, calls the defensive plays, and rarely comes off the field.

The DL is led by Edge Aidan Hutchinson and pass rushing specialist James Houston IV. Hutch plays almost every snap, and 3-tech Alim McNeil also stays in a lot; the other 7-8 DL rotate and are a solid group.

The defensive backfield added LCB Cam Sutton from the Steelers, CB Moseley (out - hamstring) from the 49ers, and CJ Gardner-Johnson from the Eagles. The latter starts alongside 2nd year S Kerby Joseph. RCB is former UDFA Jerry Jacobs, who missed 3 tackles last week and can get lost sometimes, though overall he is solid.

Keys to the game for Detroit:
  • Get Gibbs the ball, good things will happen.
  • Don't turn the ball over. Jared Goff has gone 359 passes without an interception, 3rd longest in league history (Brady, Rodgers.)
  • Get home. We know Houston, Hutch & Co will generate pressure, but they can't allow Geno to escape.
  • Limit chunk plays. It's been a problem for years and may well have been Week 1 if not for some critical drops by the Chiefs WRs.
  • Stop the run. Seattle ran for 265 yards v the Lions in 2021 and 235 last year; 51 points and 48 points. Last year Detroit did not force a single punt.
Ford Field is going to be so loud. These fans have waited their whole lives for a good team.

But...it's an up down league, and this looks like a classic Week 2 trap. Lions coming off an emotional win on banner night in KC, cannot afford to have a let down. The Seahawks looked like crap a week ago but it's the nature of the NFL and parity; they'r probably not as bad as they looked, and 72 year old Pete Carroll will probably find a way to clean things up.

This could be a get right game for Seattle, or the train keeps on rolling momentum sustainer for Detroit.

Very impressive write-up!

For Seattle to get right, they will have to control the clock by running Walker, who played at Mich St. The loss of both tackles may be too much to overcome. That will be a fired up crowd if Detroit gets a early lead.

"It's just emotion that's taking me higher..."
I fear Geno may be running for his well being today.
He has to force the ball to D.K. or he'll throw a hissy fit on the sidelines.
The Lions are rested and confident.
Goff is underated.

Nice post. Didn't Seattle lose both tackles last week and that affected their second half performance? NOTE: Just checked, the LT is OUT.

I think we see Amon Ra go over 10 targets today, big game for him coming. I know it's an up and down league, I get that but I would be really shocked to see Detroit have a "let down" game in the home opener coming off extra rest. Ford Field is going to be as loud as any stadium will be all year today. I don't like Seattle's chances.

Recent pic of Bobby

I think teams started figuring Geno out late last year, which is why he dropped off. He might be somewhat mobile, but he ain't good under pressure. And pressure is coming.

Beautiful...Lions kicking off....gives the fans a head start in getting into a frenzy...and holy **** that place is already LOUD!

"Campbells Gambles" 1-3 on fourth down this year.

47 yard FG at home in the dome seem like a good % move. Not sure how much confidence Lions have in their kicker.

If Metcalf took a potential shot to the kidney/back area, could he possible be in jeopardy of missing time beyond just this week?
We have a somewhat unique situation where a talented rookie WR-Jaxon-Smith could be a true starter at any moment
I would say he is the starter the rest of today
