S Deon Grant nearly signed

KING-5 has learned that the Seahawks have nearly signed safety Deon Grant. According to the Hawks, the deal is imminent. They probably just have to sign off on a few details. Once this happens, it'll probably mean the end of Ken Hamlin's career in Seattle. As I've written in a previous blog, Grant is pretty much the Anti-Hamlin. He's good in coverage, a leader and decent tackler. More to come.

Would be a good signing imo. Much better coverage safety then Hamlin, which is what the defense needs I think. He would also help Boulware to an extent, who would become a very good player if he was enlightened about the play-action pass.

Despite poor fantasy stats the last few years, I am still holding Grant in a few leagues cause I think his talent is better than his stats ...

How do you think his stats will look? Better than Jax I bet ...

Grant signs with Seahawks

Deon Grant has agreed to terms with Seattle on a six-year deal that could pay him more than $30 million. Update: He has now signed the deal. Grant apparently accompanied his agent, Mitch Frankel, to Seattle tonight so they could finish this deal. I don't have all specifics, but it's clear Grant is going to be a starting safety for the Seahawks in 2007. That kind of money would make him among the highest-paid safeties in the league.

While I enjoy the excitement of a late comeback by the opposition, it will be nice to NOT get burned in the 4th quarter quite so much (of course this might inhibit Josh Brown's miracle worker image). If he brings tackling skills, even better. Re hash the concept of "wrapping up". Good signing.

Not as impactful an off season as the last two years were but they've addressed some needs. Sorry to see Wistrom go but biz is biz. Would like to see some meat in the interior lines addressed, sign Stevens to an incentive laden contract and get back to the teens in the win column. Looks like the NFC West may be pretty competitive this season.

not too informed about Grant... Does he deserve this type of cash?
What type of cash? Without knowing what's guaranteed we really know nothing at the moment.
I officially rescind my comment after reading this....
ESPN.com's John Clayton notes that Grant's bonus exceeds the $11.1 million paid to Cowboys safety Roy Williams.
What a difference a year makes...The cap increase was huge this year. I'm not going to get all worked up over this. These kind of contracts are now the norm for guys who are merely "good".Anyway, Grant sure as hell can't hit like Roy can, but I'll take his coverage skills over Roy's any day of the week.

Weird....the Hawks seemed to have just signed safety Brian Russell as well.
They didn't seem to be happy with any of the safeties they ended the year with. Grant and Russell are interesting pickups, but neither are as productive on the field as you'd expect. The Seahawks are likely hoping that Grant will be a much surer tackler than Boulware or Babineaux was last year. Russell will probably allow the Seahawks some flexibility to use Babineaux at corner too.

Deon's a class act. It is not often that I hear a player speaking positive about a team he just left, especially considering that the Jags initially low-balled an offer to him.

"There are no bad feelings," Grant said. "I'm gonna miss it. What I did in Jacksonville will be a great memory. The relationships we built, nobody, no league, no team can ever take that away. It's unfortunate the way things happened, but one thing I told Double D [Donovin Darius] last night is that I'm glad this worked out the way it did.

"It's a win-win situation because it gives Gerald Sensabaugh a chance to play. Gerald is an excellent safety and now gets a chance to show what he's got. Seriously, this organization only did positive things to help my career. I definitely want to thank them for giving me the opportunity to come play. I love the city and the guys. One thing I can take from Jacksonville is that I made true friendships with the guys on the team. They're like real brothers to me and we loved each other sincerely."
