Seahawks top WR Jackson likely out until late August

Associated Press

8/3/2006

CHENEY, Wash. (AP) -- Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said top wide receiver Darrell Jackson likely will not play until the team's Aug. 26 exhibition game at San Diego.

Jackson, who had a career-high 87 receptions in 2004, had surgery on his right knee Oct. 12 to repair torn cartilage. He missed 10 games but returned to catch 20 passes in three playoff games, including five for 50 yards in Seattle's Super Bowl loss to Pittsburgh.

But weeks after that game, Jackson had a second knee surgery. He is watching training camp practices from the sidelines wearing his practice jersey, team visor and a smile.

"He's on a program to get his leg straightened," Holmgren said Thursday. "His knee is pretty good, but his muscles in his quad and so on have to be stronger, so he doesn't re-injure anything.

"He's right on schedule. We're setting a target date of a third preseason game."

Holmgren also said that D.J. Hackett, who had been getting Jackson's preseason practice plays with the first-team offense, will miss two to three weeks with a strained right hamstring. Hackett was injured while catching a pass in the end zone on the final play of Wednesday morning's practice.

Hackett, who caught 28 passes with two touchdowns last season, spent Thursday watching practice with an electric stimulation device wrapped to the top of his right leg. He limped while walking slowly.

Seattle's passing game is already missing starting tight end Jerramy Stevens. He has said team trainers expect him to be out until the third week of August following April 25 surgery on his left knee.

Defensive back and special-teams player Jimmy Williams twisted his ankle during drills Thursday morning and was limping noticeably on his way off the field. His prognosis was not immediately known.

Good to see Seattle wont be rushing him back.

I'd rather Holmgren not play him at all in the preseason. Hopefully this will lower his ADP for me so I can grab him as my WR#2.

Key points in the story are here. Those who panic over the headline ought to understand this is not a new revelation.

 hopefully cbs.sportsline posts this so my leaguemates see it !!

I wouldn't be too worried about this. Jackson is a gamer. I think he can rest and get healthy without missing a beat when it comes to time for the season to start.

Keep in mind that he played great football after returning from his knee injury late in the regular season last year.

This the part that intrigues me most. I haven't had a chance to observe a practice this season, and I can't find who's running with the first unit other than Hackett.

 i think there has been a huge injury red flag hanging over DJ since last season. i actually have a note on my cheatsheet next to his name that reads, "do not draft".
I was waiting to see a post like this. The more people that run away, the better value he will become. All I can say is thanks and feel free to spread "do not draft" posts around as often as you like.

Jackson out till late August and now Hackett out for 3 weeks, things are looking good for Nate Burleson. I really can see him garnering 800 some odd yards with 8 teeders.

I'm not as confident as you. I picked him up last year after he was released in my league. All I remember is that he kept getting pushed back longer and longer. Then when he finally played, his knee had a lot of swelling. I think you have to at least entertain the possibility that his knee may never be 100% again.Remember... last year I believe a lot of people were hoping that Michael Clayton would slide down the draft board toward them given whispers that his surgery and rehab were behind schedule.Bottom line: Since he's already got an injury that has sidelined him before, there is more likelihood of Jackson missing time due to injury than the average receiver. Eventually, he's probably worth the risk, but I for one want a little less risk if possible in a player that is being selected as early as round 3.

The Jerk has a good memory and makes a salient point here.Even in my local ppr league 3rd round seems high for this kind of risk.

Don't get me wrong, I like what DJax can do and love his upside. But I think that in many leagues he'll be drafted way before his price is right.

Any1 think that if DJax misses any real games it will hurt Burleson instead of help? I know Burleson can beat #2 corners when he has a legit #1 lined up next to him, but he still hasn't proven he can be the #1 on a team.
