Sean Taylor out a few weeks (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld 11/12/07:

Redskins FS Sean Taylor has a knee sprain and expects to miss a few weeks. Pierson Prioleau will likely take over as Washington's starting free safety while Taylor is out. Taylor was enjoying one of his best seasons as a pro. The Redskins' secondary looks ripe for the picking in Week 11 at Dallas.

Still speculation but here is more from the Washington Post.

And Sean Taylor was barely moving around with his right leg pretty much immobiler and stiff as a board. It's a knee sprain and we'll get more info later in the day, but Sean told some teammates it doesn't look as good as hoped and seems like he will miss at least a few weeks. But again, we'll get the official word later

This is going to hurt McIntosh, Fletcher and Landry, IMHO, because with Taylor in there you could count on one hand the number of passes down the deep middle of the field that teams had taken. There weren't many more to the sidelines either. Now teams will do that more as you saw yesterday with the Eagles.

I think the CB's and Andre Carter may benefit slightly. Not good news for the 'Skins overall though.

I think Carter might suffer because the WRs will likely be open, and sooner, and thus reduce the number of chances for any DL to get coverage sacks.

everytime this year I've traded for a player he goes down:

Ronnie Brown

Sean Taylor

Tommy Kelly

Tom Nalen

This is killing me!!!!

Prioleau worth a short-term pickup?
Obviously, a lot depends on your starting requirements, but I think he'd be worth a shot in deeper leagues. He had 4/1 on defense last week (he added 3 more ST/misc tackles), and that was in limited time. With Taylor out teams are undoubtedly going to test the deep middle of the field. I could see him averaging 4-5 tackles, and with a PD or 2 here and there, and the increased opportunities for INTs, you could probably do worse. And I'll reiterate some of what redman said (here and in other threads). This is really bad for the 'Skins. Taylor took a very large chunk of the field and essentially made it inaccessible to the other team. The domino effect that will occur as the D tries to make up for what Taylor was doing will be significant, IMO. Prioleau is probably an above average backup, but when you're backing up arguably the best FS in the game now, the talent dropoff may be more than what other teams have between their #1 and #2.

Deeper routes require more time to develop. I'm certainly not predicting a jump for Carter though. Maybe a slight uptick at best. If this translates into major additional points for opposing teams (which it could - people haven't realized IMHO how huge Taylor has been in that defense) then it could be disastrous all around.

I really don't want to turn this into an IDP AC thread...but taking what you said about Prioleau and assuming that the wealth will be spread across the FS and SS positions, is it riskier to take a short term look at Chris Harris in CAR who is a relatively known commodity, or take a speculation on Prioleau? I ask because if he assumes Taylor's role short term, do you think the ST #s go away?

Harris has been a solid and steady scorer in my IDP league (currently ranked #10 in total points for DBs, and outscoring Taylor) so I'd definitely take him over Prioleau. So, to answer your first question, I see Prioleau as being a much riskier pick up, mostly because how he'll be used in the absence of Taylor is still somewhat unclear, but also because it's unknown how he'll hold up with more PT and increased responsibilities. Here are a few media quotes from yesterday and today re: Taylor being out and what role Prioleau may play:One:

Gibbs said he believes defensively the team will continue to utilize a similar scheme despite the loss of Safety Sean Taylor.. Reed Doughty and Pierson Prioleau are the likely successors..
Two:
With the Redskins playing Sunday at Dallas, Taylor will be missed, Gibbs said. "We're going to have to adjust things," he said. "We've got depth there at safety; it'll be up to the defensive coaches how we're going to arrange that. We've got guys there that [are] going to have to step up and really play well for us."
Three:
Prioleau figures to have an expanded role in the defensive game plan that Gregg Williams, assistant head coach-defense, will unveil to players today at Redskins Park. The nine-year veteran struggled -- he and middle linebacker London Fletcher were beat on a 45-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter -- while filling in for Taylor late against the Eagles, but Prioleau is considered a smart player who is often in the right spot.
As for the 2nd question, Prioleau is one of the 'Skins special teams standouts so I'd be very surprised if his role there were reduced, even if he moves to FS full-time while Taylor is out.
