Sears Repair Services - UPDATE: ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD (1 Viewer)

Long Ball Larry

Footballguy
Anyone ever used them? Specifically, I need to have an oven looked at. It is definitely not under warranty.

The reviews that I find online for Sears are pretty bad, but I can't really find any other appliance repair shops with very good reviews either, so maybe just go with Sears?

Other thoughts or offers to come fix this thing are encouraged.

Had them come out to look at why a Kenmore Grill I have wasn't lighting. Was going to be $75-$100. The guy came out and fixed it within 2 secs. (something with the battery for the igniter) And he didn't charge me since the visit was so short.

Horrible Horrible Horrible Horrible. At or near the top of my "worst experiences" list. Had a Kenmore Dryer that had been having issues. Had a service tech come out to look at it. Looked at it for 5 minutes tops...pressed some buttons, nothing technical. Said, "We have to replace the control board. It'll be $300, and should be in next week." I figured, "OK, whatever," and scheduled a follow-up appointment, and made sure to take the afternoon off so I could be there to let the guy in. That day comes, and nobody shows. I call service and they say, "The circuit board is back-ordered. It's not in yet, but we'll have it sometime next week." Great. Glad I wasted an afternoon. I rescheduled. A week later, SAME thing, another afternoon wasted. I had it at that point, and told them to forget it.

I found the circuit board online, but before buying it, I took the old one out, cleaned it off (dusty), and re-installed it. Worked like a charm for another few weeks, then broke again. Ended up selling it and bought a GE.

I've had a similar experience with our dish washer. Basically, if you don't work, and have all day to sit around and wait for them, give it a shot...but if you care about your time, go elsewhere. I'll never buy a Kenmore appliance again.

I used to love Sears, but honestly, since they started making everything overseas and cutting corners, nothing they make is of good quality anymore.

Agree with the horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible assessment

Haven't bought anything from Sears in over 5 years because of a bad experience. They're deader to me than Best Buy is to GM

Sears is awful. Like a lot of things these days, you're probably better off replacing than repairing if you can't do it yourself. What's the issue?

Same boat myself right now. My Kenmore gas oven isn't lighting, the inside part...the 4 top burners are fine. I think the part I need isn't made anymore too.

hmm I was about to go out this weekend and pickup a craftsman weedwacker.. maybe I should look around more

if anyone is familiar with lawn equipment I have found high reviews for this Hitachi 21.1cc 2-Stroke Gas Powered Straight Split-Shaft Commercial Grade Grass Trimmer
I don't know about that trimmer in particular, but I will say that I bought a Hitachi leaf blower a few years back that is by far the easiest small-engine to start that I have ever owned. Prime, choke, one (maaaaybe 2 pulls) and it starts right up. Every. Single. Time. Even the 1st start after winter. Better than my Honda powered stuff honestly.

I had a similar problem with my Kenmore gas stove(probably 15 years old). I just had to replace the ignitor. Ordered the part online for $25. It's pretty easy if you can find the part.

After researching online, this is what I think that the problem is. It is a Kenmore (was there when I bought the house, so probably about 10 years old). The stove and broiler work, but the oven won't heat up. I am guessing that it is the igniter, but I can't figure out how to get at it. Any tips?

It's a litlte pricey but they have done good work for me.

There's a local guy that came twice. Ended up giving me his card so I could request him.

Like anything, nothing is cut and dry. Some techs suck, some are good. No organization is 100% good or bad.

Hmm, found this video, which is making more sense to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWrqsbWP2jo

Is there a way to test the ignitor to know that that is the problem?

I know what you mean, but everything I see online (and in this thread) is like 9 out of 10 reviews are bad.

I'm pretty sure they just contract out local places so might as well just check yellow pages or something and find them yourself

Never had any problems with Sears repair and have used them many times, for some it might be location thing. I also have many Craftsmen items like garage door opener, tools and yard equipment, no issues. Many of these are going on 10yrs with no problems. Most might not know but Sears repair also does the repair for Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowes.

I just had my drive cable in a craftsman self propelled lawn mower snap the other day. ordered the cable ($50) and it comes with no instructions or anything. I check youtube and all the videos are for old crappy mowers. don't really want to take apart my mower and risk breaking the entire thing

Yeah, this is what I'm doing. Almost everybody else's reviews are terrible too, though. Might have found one guy. His website says if you mention Carrie Underwood (or some other person from American Idol) you get a discount. Seems sound.

I got lucky that my FIL reccomended some weird dude that came out SB Sunday and put in a new fridge defrost heater for like $80 out the door...calling him for sure next time

Yeah if the broiler and cook top are lighting it's not a gas issue it's got to be the ignitor. Pretty easy to get to in my model, took the bottom out of the oven then there is a metal thing that distributes the flame(took that off)and bingo ignitor was right there. Loosen a couple screws disconnect a couple wires(newer model might just have a plug like thing on the end of the wires so just disconnect that), swapped it out, problem fixed :hifive:

This is the key line - Their older stuff was great. High quality, made in the USA, good stuff. Within the last 5 years or so, their quality has gone down hill. They basically re-brand junk with their old strong brands and sell it. It breaks. It's cheap. I have 2 craftsman garage door openers. One is 12 years old and going strong. The other one I bought to replace a Genie that busted, and I'm on my 2nd one in 2 years, and Sears wouldn't honor the warranty b/c I installed it myself (despite the defect being in the control pad, which cost as much as a new opener to replace).

Tool guys are particularly mad because they've shifted Craftsman Hand Tools from made in the US to made in China. I have an 800+ piece set of Made in the US tools that I got right before the switch. Thank god, because a lot of the reviews for the new stuff note softer steel, bad tolerances, etc.

Don't need to turn off the gas, right? One vid I found said turn it off, the other didn't mention it. I don't see why its necessary.

Thanks for the tips and video. Got the ignitor off easily and was able to use the part # to find one online with free shipping. The only thing that sucks is that it wasn't the plug kind, I have to strip back the wire, twist and cap it.

Lar, not sure if the gas needs to be off, I just turned it off anyways. Unplug it also.

No I just unplugged it, left the gas on.

Yeah, well this video makes it look like the spot where the igniter is connected is pretty exposed. But on mine, it seems like it is covered by the entire back panel. Started trying to take it off, but then there were just too many parts and I was afraid that I would #### something else up. :sigh:

I was able to get to mine through the main oven door. I must have bumped one of the gas lines inside the oven because it smelled a hour after I was done. Had the gas company come out and he found the leak in the back of the oven...luckily the nut just came loose and he simply tightened it.

Well, I ended up having them come out. The guy was quick and professional and got the job done. Cost $160. And they have online scheduling and good communication about the updates to the time window, which starts at 3-4 hours and gets narrower as it gets closer.

Only thing that wasn't good was that he was too quick and I wasn't there while he did it, so I could not see how to remove the back panel like I wanted. But hopefully I'll sell this place before I need to do that.
