Yes. I have a break in my work load in over the next two weeks. My goal is to do a before and after snapshot of the team and break it down position by position, as well as revisiting the draft. My goal would be to have that completed by July 4th.

Weeks 11-12

It has been many days since I have had time for football. Between a long vacation and business trip out of the country, there has not been much time for anything. However, I finally have a free moment to get caught up.

Attention New Guys

First, to all the guys launching threads seeking help for IDP play I would suggest a few things. Go back to the beginning of this thread. Check out some of the other posters (Tick, Rovers, Birdie, Portis_26, Urak-Hai, Bloom, Bob Magaw) and what they had to say. These guys are active in the IDP forums; have plenty of FF acumen and post frequently. They are worth reading or seeking for help.

Second, if you lack a basic understanding of defense in general, then consider these books, which were previously mentioned here in post #25.

http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...ic=156123&st=0#

If you are seeking some lighter reading that is directly related to IDP FF play, then here are this year’s magazines that have some of plenty of IDP information. You will have access to game logs; player rankings; bios and basic strategy articles.

FBG 2005 Fantasy Football Strategy Guide

Fantasy Football Index

RotoWorld.com Fantasy Football Guide 2005

Rotowire Fantasy Football Guide 2005

Fantasy League Football 2005

Each of these listed have substantial information for IDP players both novice and expert. The following magazines have limited and general IDP information and have limited information regarding players; bios and or game logs. For the most part IDP play is covered in a basic cheet sheet or 1-2 page article.

Fantasy Football.com The Magazine

Pro Football Weekly & CBS Sportsline Fantasy Football Guide 2005

Fantasy Sports

Grogan’s Fantasy Football

Here is a set of articles that is available at footballguys.com. It is well worth the read and was posted in reply #25.

Lastly, find a reliable source of information over the coming weeks to help you monitor training camp battles and I would suggest something besides television. Defensive position battles are not going to get too much run on ESPN or Fox. The casual football fan does not care about the battle for the MLB position for the Bengals. However, these types of stories will be covered by regional sports talk radio shows; local newspapers; Internet football sources and team message boards. It is tough to cut through some of the blind, subjective homer tendencies of beat writers, local reporters or message board posters but you will be able to capture some useful information.

I have not looked at this team in a few weeks nor have I looked at the before and after snapshoot. My initial observations…

I really like the addition of Palmer. His potential is being debated, as well as his immediate future, but I feel more comfortable with his upside, situation and team versus Pennington and the Jets. Obviously, I need 1-2 QB prospects but I was not going to overpay for such players in this year's draft, as none presented themselves as BPA.

RB was a problem before the draft and is a problem after. My absolute disdain for Barlow finally saw him traded and T. Henry was leverage to move two additional picks into the first round. I am not worried about the R. Brown v. R. Williams situation. Brown was not selected that high to ride the pine. The basic economics of football will see that R. Williams is gone at some point during the season or at the end of it.

I really like the Bennett/Fason combo. I know I am in the minority on this one but Fason will be starting by 2006. Overall, I will need to catch a few lucky breaks but I have realistic expectations.

The WR position was gutted. There are plenty of young hands, which is not necessarily a good thing, but players I feel comfortable with over the next 1-3 year period. Should Rogers, Stallworth, Parker and Reg. Williams comes around I might actually win a few games.

My expectations of all the rookie WR are also realistic. I do not expect any of them to follow in the footsteps of Moss, Boldin or Clayton. Hey, if someone does, that is ok but each of their situations indicate that will probably not be the case. However, Edwards, M. Williams and B. Jones will begin to produce by next season. Thorpe is the player I am most curious about.

I liked the players I got on defense. Of course, I had to trade away some vets, like Spikes, to do so but Ruud, Thurman and Davis were just too much to pass up. Picking up A. Jones in FA was a nice addition but his recent arrest is concerning. Ware is a wild card, as it is yet to be determined how good he really is and how Parcells plans to use him.

This is not the best team but I can also say it is not the worse, which is comparing rosters right off paper. As usual, post your thoughts or criticisms. I would just ask you attempt to be descriptive, as this is a learning tool for all of us IDP new guys. As usual, thanks for your time.

Looking at the before/after, it's clear to me that you have upgraded your team considerably. I think you'll do a little worse this seaon than you would have, but your future looks very good to me. Your DL sucks, so that's a place I'd be watching the wire - I managed to pick up Adalius Thomas and Greg Spires last season and both were very good at times. Maybe one of the Denver guys will emerge, or maybe someone in Cleveland.

I am taking a one year flier on Orpheus Roye ... the Cleveland DL had little depth and he seems about as sure a thing as there could be on that line ... maybe he can recapture some of his old numbers ...

Weeks 13-14 Given some current work responsibilities and the upcoming high school football season, I have no time for the FF. Between keeping up a client and helping my dad break down tape of this year's opponents, time is a little short. However, I found a break today and figured I would update the diary.Well, my FA signing of Pac Man Jones is not looking very good right about now. It is far too early to get worried about his contract and legal situation. On the other hand, I have read enough to become bothered by his character. He is one expensive roster move that could eventually bite me in the backside.Training camp news and information is difficult to decipher and coach speak is even worse. Mike Anderson was on my roster and I let him go. Now, it appears he is making a little noise in camp and could...could...push Bell for playing time. Given the lack of RB on my team, maybe this is a guy I should have held onto. Only time will tell.My franchise RB, Ronnie Brown, is not signed. Depending on the source, he and the team are close or the team is completely choking Brown on the offer. I feel good about this getting done over the next two week period. Monday night's performance showed the Dolphins need Brown in camp. The good news is that some of my moves might pay off sooner than later. I held onto Rod Gardner and he ended up with the Panthers. The Panthers are not the 1981 Chargers but Gardner has a job and will get snaps. T. Owens' situation and Pinkston's injury will see one of my FA signings, G. Lewis, get a chance to play. I have realistic expectations about Lewis but I am a big fan of good news.T. Davis is battling for a starting spot on the Panthers defense. The guy is a monster and I am glad I traded up to get him.D. Ware is getting some folks attention in Cowboy camp. Being as I live in Texas, the news I get on Ware is subjective and myopic on a clear day. Parcells' track record with defensive talent, though, is proven and I like Ware's situation. The Tuna will set the Ware up to succeed. O. Thurman's brief holdout has found him being pushed to the second team defense. My feelings are that it is only temporary and he will find his way into the starting defensive unit by camp's end. It looks like Ruud will be slowly worked into the Bucs defense. Considering some of the talent already there, this is not a breaking news story. He is working as the 2nd MLB but I think he'll find his way into more playing time after the second month of the season. Fincher and L. Mitchell have not made too much noise in camp. At least I have not been able to locate anything definitive about their respective performances. The word on C. Palmer is positive. I am very glad I got rid of Pennington and his dinged wing. Heading into the season with Palmer and Bledsoe at QB is slightly bothersome so it will be pressing that I address the QB situation somewhere in the immediate future. Seeing C. Anderson sitting on top of the depth chart for the TE position in Oakland is nice too. Sorry for the sporadic postings but a little busy right about now.

with all your myriad trades, draft picks & FA acqs, i definitely have the sense that you made far more good calls than bad ones.i still think bell is the guy in DEN.thurman is back to #1 MLB, as landon johnson was slid to SLB due to nasty pollack holdout.ruud will pay big dividends in the future... he is starting MLB no later than 2006 & maybe sooner.what is your take on TO circus... what would you assign percentage to him NOT being on roster by opening day?good stuff as always, who dat... i have been busy myself, but i always read the journal entries even if i haven't been responding as much as at the beginning.keep up the good work... no doubt this helps a lot of people working through the process of learning IDP & dynasty format for first time... this could ramp up & accelerate their learning curve considerably.your inaugural efforts are a testament to how quickly you can turn around a team, when someone with a keen eye & plan uses all the aforementioned weapons at their disposal... draft, trade & FA.

Weeks 15-16

There is nothing better than being buried by work. Couple that with the start of Texas High School football tomorrow evening and I could not be busier. Oh, my little guy, 6, just started tackle football too. I need a stunt double for the next 6 months.

First Observations

As preseason has begun, I have found that watching the games (shameless plug...if you do not have Direct TV; NFL Ticket and NFL Channel, get it immediately) and combing the boxscores has taken on a whole new meaning. Previous to this extension into IDP play, I would only follow defensive players and or kids from OU; any other Big 12 school but UT and any local or regional kids that made it to the pros. How that has changed.

I found myself picking through game logs this past weekend to see how my guys did on that side of the ball, as well as keeping up with the traditional stat tracking of offensive players. FF just got busy.

O. Thurman and D. Ware have looked solid thus far. Parcells rides all rookies hard and it looks like it will be no different with Ware. Conversely, Parcells has a deep loyalty to his guys and he puts his guys into a position to succeed. Ware is his guy. Ware was on the field for 3 dows early and often on Monday night. I'll take that. Thurman is such a seek and destroy LB. The kid's got talent and he'll be in the starting line-up come September 11th. Now, where he will be playing is another story.

The news that T. Davis is being moved into the SLB slot is a temporary set back. I had counted on him playing the SS position in run support fashion and, perhaps, spending some time at either the WLB or SLB position. It looks like injury and team need has changed that. However, it is WAY too early to start the FF doom and gloom. Davis' overall talent will keep him on the field for all downs and, opinion, he will find his way back to the SS position over the course of the season.

Just like any team in rebuilding mode most, if not all, of my conversation revolves around my rookies. Hey, you have to find the silver lining.

Ruud looks to be slated for 2nd string duty at MLB and might get some time at one of the other starting LB slots over the season. He'll be worked in slowly but should begin to pay dividends later in the season. I am not sold on the Bucs and figure the team will start playing the kids right around week 8. No offense intended towards any Buc fans.

Pac Man Jones...don't even get me started. He stands for everything in professional football or even sports that I cannot take. However, he plays special teams and is a rookie corner so he ended up on the team. I am just glad he is signed but I am worried about his bust potential.

The offense is boom or bust. Michael Bennett is already hurt. Go figure. Fason turned an ankle. Nice. R. Brown dragged his ### getting into camp. Good job. Yes, I am a little bitter.

Good news is that Brandon Jones...OU product...is looking great. C. Rogers seems to be healthy and D. Stallworth has been decent. Reggie Williams has had plenty of glossing since camps opened and might pan out. Again any good news is better than none. Even William Green is making a claim for a starting RB position.

Maybe a few of my lottery tickets get punched.

The goal over the next few weeks is to begin to follow games and boxscores for trends in defensive scoring. Starters should start playing 3-4 quarters and I will have a nice, live sample to work with versus looking at historical figures. For the first time this past weekend I realized the complexity of managing a team with players on each side of the ball.

As usual, other new guys to the IDP world please head back to the first part of the thread. There are some references to excellent tutorials and or books. Veteran IDP players, offer up any advice.

hey whodat, always look forward to your communiques...BTW, davis is back at SS... he probably lasted at LB for few days (short got hurt) until branch went IR. but hey, check back in 5 minutes, maybe he will be back at SLB. :)i did hear strongest statement yet by coach that they view him as LB... said he is 230 & may fill out further... guy is a big dude. it should be interesting to see of team & witherspoon come to agreement... i also heard for first time recently that he may extend team hometown discount... as davis owner also, i would like to see him end up at WLB, but if he can't be there, i hope he works out great at SS & stays there awhile.ware didn't just look good... he looked unfreakin-believable... i thought he wouldn't have a big year as rookie, but might be a special player as soon as next season. on film, he looks like one of fastest defenders in space at any position... i don't think he coul beat a lot of CB-types in a 40... but on the field, with pads on, stop & starting... his burst is special... elite even... because he went to cowboys & they are coached by parcells, many used former players as comps (in fact, he was given DVD of some of these to get schooled on pass rush moves)... guys like LT, charles haley, willie mcginest... i was thinking about it the other day, & his edge speed reminds me of dwight freeney.we picked up william green in new dynasty league as last RB near end... he has some talent, & if suggs is always injured he will lose backing of crennell... droughns may not be special RB (rush stats pumped up by DEN scheme)... green has his act together, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him emerge... i still think when suggs is healthy he is best RB on roster, but he hasn't been able to stay healthy like four of last five seasons dating back to va tech.IDP definitely opens up whole new dimension... if you have game, it is a nother level by which you can exploit your knowledge & skill level advantage relative to others.* stallworth is due (over) for breakout & brandon jones could be nice find... we got him & reggie williams in aboved recent draft... i like reggie to have a good year, & i think this could be the year rogers finishes a season, too.

Update...First, I want to thank everyone for all of your help thus far. You have made learning this part of FF extremely easy. I sincerely appreciate the help I have received thus far. Unfortunately, I am going to have to stop the thread. My wife's family is from New Orleans. We all know what happened a few weeks back. Her family is one of those uppercrust clans, which always makes me wonder how she ended up with me. Currently, I am providing legal assistance to my father-n-law and will be for the distant future. He lost everything and the paperwork recovery process is a nightmare, which is an absolute shame. You know how hard it is to get an insurance company to cut a check for a car wreck? Take that and give it a pain in the ### multiplier of 1,000,000. Oh, I still have my day job too, as well as a couple of pee wee coaching gigs. Things are a little hectic right now and there is no way I can keep up with this in the process. I feel guilty I cannot meet my end of the bargin going forward but, if or as time permits, I will attempt to right down things I learn through the year for other new guys.

Thanks for all you did. You have your plate full right now and this should be the bottom of your list! I wish you well in all you are trying to do to help out your in laws and your own life as well. We'll be around when you come back

Now it's our turn to help you when you need someone to bounce things off of. Hang in there, the team is looking up, and is not a major priority right now.
