Seattle blew its chance. Recall failed. (1 Viewer)

Looks like Kshama Sawant, the socialist city councilwoman who opened city hall to allow protesters inside, is losing her recall election today.  She's led head taxes that drove business out of Seattle and drove policy that resulted in homeless living on the city streets. People are finally sick of it.

Not a fan of hers from what I read. But I don’t believe that recalls should ever happen unless there is clear and blatant corruption. The proper move would have been to throw this woman out when she came up for te-election. These recall actions, IMO, are anti-republican (small r).

Sounds like these cities and councils, like the ones in Portland, Seattle, and Minneapolis, are barely American, or at least only nominally so. Their governance is almost hostile to the American project and way of life.

she violated city law 3 times, including leading a march to the mayor's house whose address is protected by city law.  she also illegally used city funds for her own political agenda.  she was essentially inciting violence when she did that and when she opened up city hall.  watch "seattle is dying" documentary on youtube to see the results of her "leadership"

I don't live in Seattle, but good for them.

When local governments and local electeds abdicate their responsibility to provide essential services, starting with public safety, they deserve to be thrown out.

You want to be a performative politician with ideological, extremist takes? Run for the House of Representatives. Local governance is there to provide the basics.

OK. If this is true that makes it more palatable for me I suppose.

As I write this, in my home city of Huntington Beach Ca, conservatives are desperately trying to recall our mayor who is a Democrat. Like the recall of Gavin Newsom, it’s 100% about policy. I hate that.

I'll see that and raise you two impeachment shams.   Dems deserve all policy recalls and the 8646 that's coming in 2023.

Impeachment is a justifiable part of the republican process. Recalls are an attack on republicanism and a move towards mob rule. Huge huge difference.

This part is just trolling right? Or do you seriously believe that Joe Biden was illegally sworn in as President and that this will be rectified in 2023?
I believe a Republican controlled house will not act any better than the Democrat controlled house and will do the exact same thing they did.

Literally none of that applies, but yeah whatever you want to believe.

Literally, figuratively, virtually and physically ALL of it applies.

Not so fast. Here comes the late night dump of liberal napkin votes.

She was behind 6% with 9% left to count.  :lmao:

good lord.  looks like she's going down though. 1200 votes left to count and she's down 246.  hope this is the beginning of turning around what was once a nice city.  she's been personally responsible for a lot of the bad policies that have led to the disaster that it has become.

Well, to be fair a lot of those bad policies were already in place before she got there. She just made them worse.  It didn't become that way overnight. It's years and Decades of democratic rule that turned it into a mess.

The people get what they voted for. They continue to vote people like her into office and Seattle going to continue to be a crap hole.

Not going to do Seattle any good if they recall her and then vote somebody just like her back in.

Sawant is a lunatic, very unlikable.

Traveled all around the US. 1200 plus nights in hotels in the past decade or so.

Seattle top 5 city out there...sorry haters!

used to be.  now:

garbage on streets & in ditches.  roads & traffic bad.  homeless & crime way up.  and of course the "love in" the officials decided was okay when they let a few blocks be run by renegades.  Man, did that ever work out!

Been to Seattle many times.   Last time was 2 years ago for 10 days.  it has went downhill fast.

Lived there for a year 20ish yrs ago. I’ll pass.  Way way way to grey and rainy.  And besides, anywhere that has a coffee shop on 3 out of 4 corners at an intersection is immediately off the list for top 5 cities.

Skiing an hour away in the winter when it’s raining in the city, temps mild winter and summer, great jobs aplenty, mountains everywhere, and great coffee. In.

Haven't even gotten to the beer, wine, food!

Whistler close by was a plus.   But this Southern California boy needs a sun.

:lmao:   If only there were other cities with that same stuff without all the crime and homelessness.  Talk about lack of city self awareness.

I do like Denver. I’ll put it in top 5.

They have no homeless problem?

They do.  I can't comment on the extent of it as I live in a suburb without one, but I'm pretty sure it's nowhere near as bad as what I've read about Seattle's.   But, I was responding to a tangent that started with this:

Not really a discussion about homelessness.  I too lived in Seattle about 20 years ago for 14 months and I concur with dkp993's assessment.  For the 2.5 months of beautiful weather in the mid/late summer Seattle is great.  The other 9-10 months are just depressing.

If people who don’t live here or live in the burbs of Seattle think otherwise oh well. It’s all subjective. I hope people are happy with where they live.

I do like Denver. I like many places, think I have spent time in probably 90% of every major city in the US and tons of smaller towns as well for work and am always happy when the plane pulls in. Seattle is top notch.

Not bad. Doesn’t have the opportunity of Seattle. Smaller town.
Yeah well if you're going to go with it has to be bigger than Seattle you're probably stuck with BLUE cities infected with homeless.

No, the homeless and crime in Denver are no where close to Seattle.

You can be actually skiing in 30 minutes in Salt Lake.

Weather alone probably contributes to the drug use.  Pitch dark before getting to or leaving work.  No thanks, I'm splitsville in 3 years or less.

Infected with homeless...eeesh.

Enjoy Salt Lake!

never mind. after the second day of counting, she has overcome statistical probability and is now ahead.  go figure.

I worked in Seattle and commuted for 3 years. I live about 45 minutes south and have been there 3 times this year (one mariners game, one seahawks game and one concert).  it's a pit.

100% agree. We never go downtown anymore. Maybe a game and then uber the f out of there.  Sad part is, its spreading. Were moving as soon as we can.
