Seattle Kicker (1 Viewer)

(RotoWire) Both Coutu and Olindo Mare made Seattle's 53-man roster, but Coutu will handle field goals, the Associated Press reports.

Analysis: Mare will kick off, so good news for Coutu, who now has fantasy value.

One will be gone after next week when Babs and Bernard return to the active roster. I think they want to try and shop one of them. Both are suitable NFL kickers.

Also, they may keep Mare and try to sneak Coutu onto the practice squad after week 1. The difference in kickoffs was overwhelming. Mare has so much more leg than the rookie its a glaring difference.

Week 2 preseason Coutu nailed all 5 FG attempts including a 46 yard and 48 yard try. The next week Mare went 1 and 1, and the one he missed was 50 yards. Mare is 2 of 11 over the last 2 years ( he is 35 and older kickers tend to lose some FG length). It is true that Coutu has sucked at kick offs and Mare has been a stud. Mare's Touchback percentage has been awesome this preseason and he probably can't maintain it. I will say that Coutu hasn't been terrible. He has had 3 big returns against him, but he kicked them into the 1, -2, and -1. Perhaps he is over kicking the coverage? Without seeing the games, I can't determine if the big returns have been Coutu's fault or not.

I have no idea what the odds are that they would keep both kickers on the roster. Mare strickly for kick offs and Coutu for FG's. If they do let one go, the other kicker has a real shot at being a top kicker this year.

I have included the details from the kickoff for Seattle below:

Week1

7-B.Coutu kicks 65 yards from SEA 30 to MIN 5. 34-A.Young to MIN 28 for 23 yards (35-O.Schmitt).

Can you further explain these bolded parts? What basis?Mare is a monster on kickoffs. Always has been. He's been doing it for years. Why would you suddenly expect it drop off now?

Personally, I hope they keep Mare and let the rookie go. There will be three more in next year's draft class to take a shot at in round 7. Round 6 and 7 picks are generally desperate grabs anyway. Sure you can find plenty of productive players drafted in those rounds, but I bet I can find 10 times as many guy who never made it past the practice squad.

Mare has a 30% touchback rate (28.8% last year). In preseason this year, He is averaging 44%, I don't think he ends the season with 44%, thus "he probably can't maintain it".As for older kickers losing some FG distance, Just look at Mare. His first 9 years in the leauge, he was 50% from 50+ yards. Over the last 2 years he is 18%. Vinateri, one of the best kickers ever, for his first 9 years in the leauge, he was 53% from 50+ yards. Over the last 3 years he hasn't made one, he missed all 4 attempts. In fact he hasn't hit one in the last 5 seasons. You see all the time as a kicker gets older his ability to nail the big FG declines. In fact, what typically happens with these guys is they keep the older vet to kick the shorter FG's and extra points because he is money inside the 40. They bring the younger buck in to kick the long ball and kickoffs. That is a lot more common then what we see here where they may potentially be keeping the older guy to kick the long ball and the younger guy to kick the shorter FG's and extra picks.

That is what makes this tough to figure out, I don't think there is a lot of precidence to compare to. As far as them canning the rookie, it seems it would be real tough to let go of a kicker that has been a perfect 7 of 7 FG and 4 of 4 Xp's in preseason. The 7th round is pretty high for a kicker, and the guy was a stud in college, known for his big leg.

Mare's money is guaranteed as a vet if he is on the roster week 1 so if they loose either it will be the rookie. As Enforcer has said in several posts (without crediting the Seahwk's Insider he got it from) they may try to get Cuotu onto the practice squad. But if/when they cut one I doubt it's the guy they have to pay for the whole season.

Excellent put and well said. Thanks!

Not true, he hit a 50+ against Baltimore in the playoffs in 2006, but I get your point.

From Seahawks Insider psted by F Hughes after today's practice:

Olindo Mare will be kicking against Buffalo. It seems that Mare separated himself because of his distance on kickoffs. Mare in fact said he had perhaps the best training camp and preseason of his career.
I assume that means both kickoffs and FGs, Hughes did not elaborate.

I don't recall reading "sneak him onto the practice squad" at the TNT blog. If its there, okay. Apologies if I somehow offended by having the same logical thought as someone else that follows the team. :goodposting:

Mare's money is not guaranteed if he's cut before the first game. I'm not sure I'd put too much faith into that until after week 1. Also from the little I've seen so far, they may be better served to have 2 kickers. Seems to me they are keeping their options open. I'm also pretty sure that they didn't sign Mare for much. I don't think journeyman kicker money will destroy the cap if they go with the rookie.

Coutu's tree big returns have mostly ben the coverae's fault. And if you notice, Coutu made all 3 tackles on those 3 big returns. When you kick the ball to the 1 or deeper, and make the tackle on a big return it's not your fault.

Uhm it's still your fault, but it's better that you at least stopped the TD. I don't know of any coach in history that said "It's ok because the kicker tackled him!" Usually that gets most coaches upset.

Are you saying he put the ball on the 1 or deeper on all those kickoffs? I don't remember any of his kickoffs making it that far. I'm sure he can once in a while, but I don't remember seeing it.

That is true. 2 of them were caught in the end zone, and the other was caught on the 1. In fact, to that point, he had one kick to the 13 and one to the 8, and the rest were inside the 5. Not great, but at least on terrible. However, like I said, Mare has been lights out on kick offs in the preseason.
