Hackett out indefinitely; Wallace at wide receiver?

FRANK HUGHES; The News Tribune Published: September 10th, 2007 04:12 PM

KIRKLAND – Seattle Seahawks wide receiver D.J. Hackett suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday’s 20-6 season-opening victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and likely will miss at least a month.

Hackett suffered the injury on the play he made his only catch of the game. The catch came in the first quarter, and Hackett was hit as he pivoted on his toe after the catch, knocking him out of the game.

Hackett was wearing a walking boot in the team’s locker room on Monday and left on crutches, saying little as his contract year got off to a poor start.

“Just rehab and try to get better as soon as possible,” Hackett said. “That’s just the way the cookie crumbles. I’m just going to ride it out and see what happens.”

Nate Burleson, who was competing for the starting spot that Hackett won in preseason, will be the starting split end against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

It is an opportunity for Burleson to redeem what was a disappointing first season with the Seahawks. Burleson, troubled by a thumb injury last season, had just 18 receptions for 192 yards in 2006.

“I don’t want people to look at (the thumb) as an excuse,” Burleson said. “I want it to be taken for what it was. It was an 18-catch season and was not as productive as I wanted it to be. All I can do is embrace this upcoming year. I have to be opportunistic, I have to be hungry.”

Burleson had a 56-yard punt return in the second quarter of Sunday’s victory, the play that effectively turned the momentum permanently in Seattle’s favor.

Though he shared kickoff return duties with rookie Josh Wilson and though his responsibilities will increase against the Cardinals, Burleson said he does not expect to stop being a part of special teams.

Second-year receiver Ben Obomanu, who missed Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury, is expected to practice Wednesday and should be able to play Sunday, giving the Seahawks a viable option as their fourth wide receiver.

It remains to be seen if Courtney Taylor will be activated. The Seahawks had only four wide receivers active Sunday, and when Hackett went out it left them unable to run some of their four-receiver sets. Coach Mike Holmgren attempted to use tight end Ben Joppru as the fourth receiver but admitted it did not work well. Holmgren also said he could use backup quarterback Seneca Wallace, though he said he would not use him if the team had only two quarterbacks, as it currently does.

When asked if the team is likely to sign a third quarterback this week, Holmgren indicated there was a decent possibility it could happen. He did not provide names, though Ken Dorsey worked out last week.

“We’re still looking,” Holmgren said. “When we do it, I think we’ll just do it. I don’t think we have to work anybody out other than to make sure they can walk and run and throw a little bit.”

Meanwhile, Holmgren said he felt partially responsible for the lack of productivity by wide receiver Deion Branch, who had no receptions on Sunday despite being tabbed as the team’s top receiver when Darrell Jackson was traded.

Branch was taken out of the Seahawks’ offense by Tampa Bay’s Cover 2 defense, but Holmgren said regardless of the opponent he needed to devise schemes to take advantage of Branch’s abilities.

“I must get him the ball,” Holmgren said. “I don’t want him to have games where he doesn’t have a catch. I have to figure out ways to get him the ball.”

Obomanu had been having an exceptional preseason, including a touchdown reception against the San Diego Chargers.

But a few days before the final preseason game, he strained the hamstring in practice. With Hackett out, he will be worked into the offense more quickly than expected.

“Even before Hackett went down I was still preparing myself for the chance to play,” Obomanu said. “With the situation that has played out with Hackett, it motivated me even more. I figured my chance would come. I didn’t think it would come this soon.”

Extra points: Defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy, waived by Denver before the season, will visit the Seahawks this week. … Starting linebacker Leroy Hill also was on crutches in the locker room, though his undisclosed injury is not considered serious and he should be able to practice on Wednesday.

The story from FoxSports on the Frye trade, not the bold...

Browns trade Frye to Seattle

Apparently, 20 minutes of action was all the Browns needed to see to make a change at quarterback.

Cleveland has traded former starting quarterback Charlie Frye to the Seattle Seahawks for a sixth-round pick, FOXSports.com has learned.

With Frye out of the picture, it should only be a matter of time before first-round pick Brady Quinn gets the nod as the starter.

The Seahawks have been in the market for a backup quarterback, which will free them up to use Seneca Wallace in other positions around the field.

The Browns will bring back Ken Dorsey, who was with the team in training camp, to serve as their third quarterback.

In just over a quarter of play on Sunday against the Steelers, Frye was 4-of-10 for 34 yards and 1 INT. Frye was also sacked five times before giving way to Derek Anderson early in the second quarter.

Anderson would throw for 184 yards and the team's only touchdown of the day, but also had an interception in the Browns' 34-7 loss.

From Draftsharks:

** We have a new inside source in Seattle who tells us the Charlie Frye trade to Seattle means more than just acquiring a backup QB. It means that Mike Holmgren is going to move QB Seneca Wallace to full-time WR… presumably D.J. Hackett’s vacated split end spot. This is unconfirmed by Seahawks team officials but we thought we’d pass it along. Some if you in bonus-scoring leagues could have fun with an NFL.com-listed quarterback playing wideout on your roster. We’ll see.

Has Seneca ever even practiced at WR? Seems like bringing in Frye just to move Wallace over to WR so they have another WR would be a very convoluted way of doing things. Maybe just sign a WR instead?

i could see him getting some ST duty sprinkled in there too. see also dante hall, perhaps?

I don't think Wallace will see much, if any time, at WR until the coaching staff has had a chance to bring Frye up to snuff with the offense. How long that takes, I don't know. Until Frye is an adequate backup I think Wallace has more team value as a QB. Having said that and from what I've heard and read about Wallace, he has more raw talent then any WR on the team.
