Serena 1st Female SI Sportsperson of the Year since '83 (1 Viewer)

#1 ranked player for 151 straight weeks. Good choice.

(aside - Venus has been ranked #1 for 11 weeks in her career, last time was 5+ years ago; Serena has spent 274 weeks at #1. Odd you would even bring it up.)

She's deservedly unpopular/unlikeable but you cannot deny her dominance.

Don't they name one every year?
First woman since 1983 who didn't share the award with a man. Four women have shared the award since then.

Without looking it up, I'm guess like 1% of sports fans could name the last solo woman winner.

I believe the entire 1999 US Womens Soccer team also won.

Did we need to say she was female? I think she deserves it and has for a long time. There is only one person in tennis history I think could stay on the court with Serena and that be Steffi Graf. Serena might be the best hard court female ever. I give Graf a fighting chance at Wimbledon and the French. Martina was amazing but it was built on a serve and volley game that simply would not work with Serena.

I'm saying that Venus might have had a more flourishing career. Venus was winning plenty until Serena got rolling.

I doubt many people could name last year's winner without looking it up.
Good point. Maybe after 10 guesses.

You could give someone 500 guesses for the 1983 winner and after they gave up they'd be like W.T.F. - seriously?

Yes, adding the word "female" makes the title more accurate. Still not perfectly accurate since many females have won -- they have just shared the honor with others (like Pat Summit, Mary Lou Retton, and Bonnie Blair) or been part of a team.

I don't argue that she deserves it.
