Shaffer wants out (1 Viewer)

Funny, even when CLE gets praise for having an excellent draft day they still can't stay with positive news for more than a day. I remember being ticked off AJ didn't even have this guy in for an interview last year. There aren't a lot LT's out there on the market and I can't help but wonder if an OAK or KC would be interested in talking about acquiring his services. I'm not sure what the salary cap implications would be for CLE though, they would seem to be steep at first glance.

Browns LT Shaffer Seeking Trade

Tony Grossi, Cleveland Plain Dealer - [Full Article]

The agent for Cleveland LT Kevin Shaffer has asked that the Browns shop his client after the Browns invested its third overall pick on Wisconsin LT Joe Thomas. "I think Kevin, in our dialogue, would welcome an opportunity to go somewhere else," agent Alan Herman said. The Browns signed Shaffer to a seven year, $36 million deal last year, including $12 million in signing and option bonuses. A trade attempt with the Giants fell through over the weekend.

The Browns reportedly wanted a 4th rounder and NYG balked. If the guy was good enough to warrant all that interest last year, a 4th rounder is not crazy. Of course, his play last year may indicate it is.

In any event, he has a lot of time left on his contract. HE really has little leverage. With the cap hit, Cleveland should demand a lot - or just hold onto him. Maybe he'll settle down and play on the right side.

Are we even sure Thomas will be playing the left side off the bat? I would think the wise thing to do is place him at RT for a year and let him absorb the NFL game a bit. Seems to have worked well for other Tackles and Clev does not need to force him into that LT spot with Shaffer there.

they like tucker on the right. they would love to get rid of him, if they could find someone stupid enough to take his salary

Miami should really go after him. He is loads better than anything we have, and the nice thing about a trade for any player is the other team takes the signing bonus hit. You can release the player next eyar without salary implications

Not true. The Browns would take a cap hit "upwards of $8 million" if they traded him. They want to try him at RG. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/plaindeale....xml&coll=2
