Shark Pool Mock Draft 2011 - 4 Rounds (1 Viewer)

Cincinnati Bengals Select DT Jarvis Jenkins from Clemson. Will bolster the DT rotation that Zimmer likes to use.

Strengths:

Prototypical height and bulk with a thick solid build

Very athletic with good speed, quickness and agility

Real stout at the point of attack and stuffs the run

Strong, physical, powerful and a terrific bull rusher

Is able to penetrate and make plays in the backfield

Mobile with nice range and does quite well in pursuit

Displays above average instincts / overall awareness

Will offer some positional and schematic versatility

Durable w/ lots of experience versus top competition

Weaknesses:

Lacks a varied repertoire of rush moves and counters

Was not an overly productive sack artist in college

Struggles to shed blocks and must improve hand use

Gets tall and needs to play with consistent leverage

Tendency to miss occasional tackle from time to time

Might have a bit of an issue when it comes to stamina

With the 63rd pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select:

Kenrick Ellis, NT, Hampton

Aubrayo Franklin WILL be gone in 2012, there's no way the niners will pay the $12 to franchise him (assuming that's still an option) for next year. Ricky Jean-Francois, his backup, is too undersized to engulf blockers and dominate at the point of attach. While he has a good motor, RJF is not suited to play 3 downs.

Ellis joins the short list of nose tackles (along with Phil Taylor, and Marvin Austin) that have character issues, but Ellis more so than the others has demonstrated unique athleticism for a man this size. His ability to move in space as an almost 350 lb man is special. The coaches at Hampton have said that Ellis runs the linebacker drills just for fun during practice.

Although the draftniks think the niners need an OLB and a CB, there just isn't a guy here in any of those positions that has the potential of a guy like Kenrick Ellis. If he can stay away from trouble, Ellis has elite ability and can not only swallow up blockers but become disruptive in the backfield. Yet another boom or bust pick for the niners in the 2nd round.
This is a guy I hope Dallas can get at 73. There are very few NTs in this draft, as you mention. This is one of them.

Seeing who's on the board and who's drafting ahaed of them, I've got a good idea who I'd like for Dallas. And I think he falls to them given what the teams still drafting ahead of them have alaready done. We'll see if I'm right.

oof...Julio Jones them Ryan Mallet? Is John York running this draft for the Niners?
Itd make for interesting shoot outs with the rams this season.
Which part--Mallet throwing 95mph fastballs off Gore's hands? or Mallet disintegrating with a little pressure? Mallet does not have accuracy, touch or the decision making skills necessary to play in the WCO, IMHO. I see where York is going here with Mallet. He read an article that says Mallet's a fit for the WCO. Just like the previous pick, where York tried to pin the O woes on the WR position, I disagree 100%. We'll find out soon enough, and Joe Thomas could be wrong :)FWIW--I like the Hampton pick  That said, I congratulate York for thinking out of the box. It will be fun to see what happens.

3.04 - Buffalo Bills - Bruce Carter, OLB North Carolina

From Mr. Peterson:

The Bills run a 3-4 hybrid kind of D and I know he might not fit, but Bruce Carter is too good to pass up here. I keep hearing how he would be a top 15 guy if he wasn't hurt so lasting into the 3rd is crazy. The Bills will find a spot to play him and possible next to Poz when we're in the 3-4 alignment.

At 3.5 The Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers select

Jurrel Casey - DT/DE USC

1st Team All Pac 10, USC MVP 2010

I considered him and Ballard at this spot. Ballard is more athletic, but Casey makes more plays. At 21 years old Casey is also a full year younger than Ballard. I think his size and athletic ability will be fit at DE in the 3-4. I like the MVP award from coaches and teammates at USC.

Again, going into the draft I expected to get more OL help, but they went faster than I expected. I still think their are plenty of people who can play Guard, but the OTs left are projects, and I don't feel like Casey is a project.

Third round moving fast, Browns up.

6. Cleveland Browns (gandalas)

+Nick Fairley (DT, Auburn)

> Jonathan Baldwin WR Pittsburgh

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Browns still haven't addressed the defensive end/pass rush need and Sam Acho is still available.

About the last DE left who has a shot.

Jes my humble-o.

There are at least 4 guys I can see Dallas going with when they are up after Cleveland. It will be interesting to see who they end up with.

You read my mind...I have been looking at him since about the last 3rd of the 2nd round...

With the 6th pick of the 3rd round, The Cleveland Browns select DE Sam Acho from the University of Texas.

Very impressed with his intangibles, and he has done well the past 2 seasons in getting to the QB.

On to the 'Boys. :)

It is not my pick to make. But these are the 4 I would be looking at:

ILB: Mason Foster - Washington. Projects as an ILB in the 3-4. Very instinctive player, much like last year's Sean Lee. Has good size, not great. Good athleticism, not great. Instincts are what make this guy a player at the next level. And he fills the void that opens next year with Bradie James and Keith Brookings ending their deals after next year.

CB: Curtis Marsh - Utah State. Fluid athlete with very nice size/speed combo. Still learning the position, so will take time to develop. But seems to have the natural ability to play the postion at a high level. Could take Newman's spot in time.

DE: Christian Ballard - Iowa. Explosive first step from a 290+ lb guy. May be one of the last 5-techniques with starter ability still on the board. Not the best pass rusher, however. Becomes part of the rotation at DE which is lacking bodies currently under contract.

OG: Clint Boling - Georgia. Not a sexy pick. But an experienced OL from the SEC. Shows a nasty streak which should help in the run game. Has decent, not great athleticism. Should be able to play early and be a long time solid starter.

Sorry guys, I was actually busy at work today, anyway...

With the 7th pick in the 3rd round, the Dallas Cowboys select OG Clint Boling, University of Georgia

I think Boling is a great value here and adds much-needed depth at the OL position behind Andre Gurode and Kyle Kosier, both of whom are into their 30's and have had injury issues as of late. This pick, along with Dallas' first pick of Tyron Smith should solidify Dallas' OL issues that should have been addressed last year. The second round pick of Rahim Moore adds an instant upgrade at free safety (assuming Dallas doesn't go and pick up a free safety like Michael Huff from free agency).

Makes a lot of sense. Dallas needs 4 new starters on the OL. Two in the draft this year. Perhaps a FA this year or next. And another next year. Smith and Boling would make over the right side of the line for the next 8 years.

Have you watched alot of Ryan Mallett or something to have such a strong opinion or did you just read a bunch of ANALysis from the two Matts (who basically regurgitate Kiper and other draft "gurus"? Please glance over the 2nd link that I listed in the Ryan Mallett pick. It's a VERY in-depth analysis done of Mallett on and off the field by Universal Draft, and you will learn that your synopsis of him being inaccurate, having no touch, poor decisions, etc is completely unfounded. If you disregard it because you've already got your mind made up about him... well, not much i can do for you. Also watch the recent Gruden interviews with Mallett and Locker. When asked to diagnose and explain the play on tape, Mallett pulls an Alvin Mack and is surprisingly articulate and detailed in his knowledge... Where as all Locker basically says is "I've got hot reads, and if I think someone's blitzing I yell out 'hot'."

There's a good reason Mallett was invited to niners HQ, that should be telling enough.

Just stepped in to confirm something.SF (CWM?) owner traded 2.13 and 3.12 for two late 2nds and a future 3rd? And they probably got the guy they wanted at 2.13 down at 2.23? If so that's some great trading. Well done.
Thanks. I originally traded out because when I saw Kaepernick go so early I was convinced the cards were going to take Mallett. I also didn't expect him to get past the Raiders. The negative pub on Mallett is so strange, IMO there's no way he makes it out of the 1st day.

I have seen reports that 2 different GMs are predicting/expecting 5 QBs to go in the 1st round. This could certainly be a case of blowing smoke, but what does everyone think?

I think it could very well be true. As many as 10 teams are looking for a new starter at QB and they're all packed at the top of the round. That means there will be a run on QBs at some point with probably alot of jostling from teams that have certain guys rated higher than others. The demand commands value.

I like and agree with your side of this debate.

I will admit I do not know Ryan Mallett, he might be a punk.

But, I do know when I saw him on the field he was ALWAYS the most talented player I saw.

Talent wise, he is the best qb in this draft. He worked in a prostyle offense and I find it hard to think he is so hard to get along with when you never heard any problems with him and Petrino (and Petrino seems like a real #####)

I saw on sports science where Mallet can throw a twenty yard pass in less than 1.5 seconds.....that's some heat and he looks accurate to me.

Now, he personally doesn't seem like a West coast offense to me. Eventhough he is accurate he goes downfield more than dink and dump.

However if a team gets him in the 2nd or later they are getting a very good prospect for a very good price.

3.04 - Buffalo Bills - Bruce Carter, OLB North Carolina

From Mr. Peterson:

The Bills run a 3-4 hybrid kind of D and I know he might not fit, but Bruce Carter is too good to pass up here. Wow. I'm really surprised this guy was available this late. I tried trading up into the 2nd to get him but I got lucky that he fell to the 3rd. Mayock and other "experts" keep saying how he would be a mid 1st round guy if he wasn't hurt. Add in the fact that I hear that he might be healthy enough to possibly even start the season then I can't see why he fell this far. The guy is a stud LB and I know he might fit better in a 4-3 D, but he's so good that I think he can play in any scheme. There's no reason in my opinion why he can't play in the middle of a 3-4. He definitley has the size and strength to play middle and has the smarts and instincts as well. Whatever team drafts him in the real draft is gonna get a steal. I hope he goes later in the draft so I can steal him real late in my dynasty leagues. If he went right before me I also had Acho and another 3-4 pass rush OLB on my list. Both would be better fits possibly (and both will be good players) but I just couldn't pass up on Bruce Carter.

I think the concern with Carter is that he was injured so late in the season that he won't be able to contribute during his rookie year. (a la Brandon Tate) Also due to the late injury he isn't far along enough to do any work for the scouts. A good pick for the Bills though, their run D could certainly use the help.

3.08 Saints pick Kendall Hunter RB Oklahoma St
I'm not trying to be a ####, but there's no way you can be a Saints fan.
Why??? I think the Saints will look for a rb early.Hunter fits in that offense nicely as being able to catch the ball and run inside and out.Why dont you like this pick?
This was more in reference to all 3 picks made. None have addressed areas of need thus far. I'm not a GM or coach, nor do I claim to have any inside info on what the team plans to do. As a fan I'd like to see them address other positions than what's been done here. That is all. I don't feel RB should be addressed early on, especially with the undrafted gems Payton has found. OL and pass rush are the teams biggest needs. Both have to be addressed early on.

Interesting draft you guys have going on here. Just a few comments I'd like to make about the Niners picks so far if it's ok. If I'm butting in I apologize and won't make any future comments if it's disruptive to your draft.

1st Round- WR Julio Jones

I'm really hoping that Patrick Peterson lasts until we pick at 7 but I realze that may not happen. Even if Peterson is gone there could be a good defensive player we could get that would help us. With that said I am not however opposed to us taking Julio Jones, though some 9er fans may disagree. You certainly need good offensive players to win games and I say you can never have enough good offensive weapons. Anything to help make us better and win games I'm all for. That being the case if the 49ers brass thinks that Julio Jones is the best available player I say go for it. We've had Rice & Taylor, Rice & Owens so why not have Crabtree & Jones. Crabby isn't exactly tearing it up right now but he's young and can certainly get better. Jones will be the second WR off the board and even some feel he's better than AJ Green in some aspects. He certainly has the potential to be the best receiver in this draft class. I would support the selection of Jones.

2nd Round- QB Ryan Mallett

No doubt he has talent and could be the best QB of his draft class. No doubt he brings some baggage and question marks along as well. So have a lot of players over the years and many have gone on to be successful. No doubt again, the 49ers NEED a QB even if they keep Smith and he plays. Smith IMO is and will never be the QB of the future for the 49ers. I'm putting my trust and faith, maybe blindly, in Jim Harbaugh that he will get a QB that he can work with and mold into a quality NFL starter. I'm not going to automatically say that Mallett will be a bust in the NFL because of the issues that surrounds him nor will I say he's going to turn it around and become a stud. If we take him with our 2nd round pick I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he turns out to be somewhat like the great QB's the Niners have had in the past like Montana and Young. No, I don't think he'll come close to the likes of Montana and Young but even in his current state he'd be a far better cry than Alex Smith. If he ends up a Niner I tip my hat and wish him the best. So I guess I'm saying I'm not opposed to us taking him either along with Jones.

A couple of out of the box picks there Chinawildman but certainly not ones that are unreasonable. Considering the current makeup of our beloved 49ers both Jones and Mallett would make us a better team and I would not have a problem indeed if they end up being our first two selctions on draft day.

Well, Washington traded down with their 2nd round pick and picked up a third to do it. The hope was that a certain QB would still be available. I had my heart set on one of two QBs, and one just happened to go with the pick right before me. #### happens. So, with the 56th pick in the 2011 mock NFL draft, the Washington Redskins select - Christian Ponder, QB, Florida State University.
I am not sure why people do not like Christian Ponder. Frankly, he has just as much if not more potential than Jake Locker. Also not buying that Mallet is somehow a better fit in San Fancisco than Ponder. IMO, he is the steal of the draft.

Agreed, I pm'd KC about moving up before Washington to try and make this pick.

And here's the thing on that... wanted Gilbert. Obviously.Did not think he would reach 2.31, at all, wasn't willing to risk it. And I like him as a pass blocking tackle, as does Pitt (official visit).

To offer the Steelers 2nd, 3rd and 4th (441) would have actually been short (450, though almost even) on the value charts.

So had to make the small uptick (520, change 4th this year into a 3rd next year) to ensure that chinawild would like the offer.

I could have bartered? Wasn't worth it. Knew what I wanted, knew the values and new what I was willing to pay.

chinawild was in the right place at the right time and swooped up on it.

The Steelers are already strong and have 2 gaping needs, especially for the long term. CB and a pass blocking OT.

3.08 Saints pick Kendall Hunter RB Oklahoma St
Very nice, Hunter will be at least twice the RB Bush is...
I think you might be going a little overboard here...
I think this statement has as much to do with my disdain for Bush's game as it does with how big a fan I am of Kendall Hunter. Reggie Bush is just not a very natural runner... Hunter's running style reminds me of Frank Gore during the Miami days. Great vision and burst, ability to keep balance and break tackles. Basically all the things Bush sucks at.

No.

Browns second selection of the third round about up and we could go in a couple of different directions.

Here is the National Football League Post's top remaining players and they all could fill a need on the Browns board.

NFP top 100 players

#41 Jason Pinkston OG, Pittsburgh HT. 6-4 WT. 305 Grade 6.8 P

Last year they pegged an OG from Hawaii in the third round but the kid just doesn't look strong enough to get a decent push inside so this pick makes sense.

#44 Curtis Marsh CB, Utah State HT. 6-1 WT. 193 Grade 6.8 D

They could always use good corners.

#46 Curtis Brown CB, Texas HT. 6-0 WT. 184 Grade 6.8 B

See above.

# 49 Jerrel Jernigan WR, Troy State HT. 5-9 WT. 190 Grade 6.7 X

Looks explosive and a Heckert type of WR but he doesn't appear big enough to be a full time starter yet he could find a niche in the offense and provide a spark.

#63 Christian Ballard DE, Iowa HT. 6-5 WT. 297 Grade 6.5 D

Higher rated on most other boards but he's strictly a 5-tech 3-4 DE and doesn't fit the Browns scheme.

Others who could ping on the Browns radar, QB Ricky Stanzi even if he's rated much lower on some boards, DE Greg Romeus from Pitt who was out injured and doesn't have any edge rush to his game. A tall/lanky DE who seals the edge and gets his mitts up to disrupt screens. He does get a push and had respectable sack numbers when he was healthy but if he over runs the play then he essentially takes himself out of the play so he has zero recovery ability if he's out of position but he could be effective in a rotation. Bottom line is the Browns still need another DE and possibly another DT to have an effective rotation.

Lions take Mason Foster-OLB-Washington

This way the Lions get a very good starter at the LB position, plus Amukamara to be a shutdown corner solves their secondary needs, and Cobb gives them one more offensive threat. Now they are just a left tackle away from being a playoff team.

With the 13th pick in the 3rd round, the Cleveland Browns select Tackle Orlando Franklin, from the University of Miami. He will compete at both RT and RG, and should be able to eventually become a long-term starter at RT for us.
Strengths: • Terrific height and bulk w/ long arms and big hands • Adequate athleticism, balance, body control and feet • Extremely physical with excellent strength and power • Very stout at the point of attack and is able to anchor • Mauler who gets an outstanding push as a run blocker • Is able to pull, get to second level and work in space • Aggressive and plays the game with a nasty demeanor • Motor runs non-stop and he always finishes his blocks • Is versatile with the ability to play multiple positions • Tough, durable and will play through pain and injuries • Has a ton of experience against top-notch competitionWeaknesses: • Not technically sound in terms of footwork / hand use • Questionable agility and is not a natural knee bender • Some trouble sliding / mirroring and protecting edge • Instincts and awareness seem to be lacking at times • May be a bit of a 'tweener without a natural position • Struggled with weight and conditioning is a concernNotes:A three-year starter (51 career games) for the Hurricanes --- Named 2nd Team All-ACC in 2010 --- Played left guard in 2007, 2008 and 2009 before moving to left tackle in 2010 --- Has undergone surgeries to repair wrist ('07) and knee ('10) issues but in both cases waited until after the season --- Relocated from Canada to Florida his junior year of high school and is originally from Jamaica --- Could project to either right tackle or offensive guard at the next level --- Impressive all- around blocker with talent to start in the NFL, whether it be outside or inside --- Similar in many ways to Vernon Carey of the Miami Dolphins.

I'm excited to see who Harjiran will pick for the Raiders 3rd round pick. Some of the Raiders bigger needs are OL©, not sure if a Center grades out here in the 3rd, OLB, CB (because it looks like Asomuga will be gone) and possibley FS (because there is a decent chance Huff will be gone as well). Couple of other options may even be RB or TE if Oakland thinks they can't resign Bush & Miller even though I do expect Miller to be back. Some time during the draft I could see Oakland drafting a QB to sit behind Jason Campbell for a couple of years.
