I don't want to volunteer anyone but since Andy started the topic maybe he would be willing to allow anyone within the next 2 or 3 picks to PM him a list if they think they will not get on for a while? The picks could get posted and those drafters could then come on when they have time and post about why they selected who they did.

Good idea but people have been doing it already. Unfortunately the one's that haven't have been the ones holding it up.

Obviously I like the pick. Matthews should be able to play early and perhaps eventually replace Porter. I love his ability to get after the QB and while it might a slight reach, his best football is almost certainly in front of him. And I agree that the bloodlines might influence the selection.

Is Matthews a rush OLB? Would they consider Larry English?

1.26 Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland

The Ravens #1 need is probably cornerback, but with Heyward-Bey still on the board (and a good likelihood of corners available in Round 2) the Ravens have to take Heyward-Bey. Joe Flacco needs more viable targets and Derrick Mason is closer to retirement than Baltimore fans want to admit. Mark Clayton could still emerge, but right now Flacco needs to grow and mature with a playmaker wideout. The former Terrapin is a potential true NFL WR #1 and his Maryland ties are also a plus (which may soften the blow if Ray Lewis heads for bigger money elsewhere).

Glenn with the Patriots. But that's okay...Matthews is a decent pick. Do you expect them to not re-sign Crowder? Where will Matthews play in the 3-4?

Not sure on Crowder - they'll take a look at Dansby, Scott, etc but Crowder might come cheaper than any of those FA's.I can see Matthews lining up opposite Porter - again IMO Matt Roth is not the answer there. I almost didn't take Matthews. I haven't seen anything on him here at FBG but keep an eye on this guy . . . Cameron Wake (remember him from Penn State?). The Dolphins just signed him from the CFL - he led the league in sacks the last 2 years and was named defensive MVP both years. His sack total last year more than doubvled the guy who had the 2nd most sacks. He's bulked up and has a good chance of starting opposite Porter to start the year.

I like the Matthews. With Langford and Merling playing well last season I think we can skip on Jackson. I think Jerry is suited more for the 4-3. I could also see C Mack, CBs Smith or Moore, or FS Moore here.

Parcells most definitely follows some patterns. I should try to dig up the research that I did on that when he was with Dallas. But the bottom line is he takes a very high percentage of 1st rounders at the defensive front 7. The Jackson kid from LSU totally fits for Parcells. Tuna has also taken a lot of LSU guys in recent years.Regarding WRs, he stated time after time that 1st round WRs have the highest bust rate of any position. That you can usually find quality guys much later. It is highly unlikely he'd take one.

The Maryland ties are interesting. I see Darrius Heyward-Bey as a bit of a boom/bust guy. He has top tier skills but seemed to disappear at times at Maryland. But the end of the first round is a great time to take a shot at a boom/bust WR. And it would be a nice reward for the rookie QB that played so well last season.

I can't argue with this pick as another weapon on offense is needed. However, I think this is yet another of those picks that will be heavily influenced by what happens during the FA period. The Ravens Defense is the reason they are successful and there are quite a few guys that could be leaving or at least are getting very long in the tooth. They need a reload on defense if they want to keep the unit dominant.

Last year was definitely an aberration. For the first time in 21 drafts, he took an OT in the first and a QB in the second. I actually just updated his draft list in this post:

Ask Peyton to restructure his contract (he counts 21 millions against the cap going into '09), along with Brock, Diem, and Brackett. This allow them to make some moves during the FA period. I know Polian isn't too big on FA shopping, but Haynesworth (7yrs 60mil) needs to be holding a Colts uniform come March. The window is closing for the Colts and there isn't an impact DT this late in the draft, so I can't justify taking one in the 1st rd. Here we go.

With the departure of J. Saturday the 'C' position is a must and Mack is the closest thing to a "Nick Mangold" (instant impact) in this year draft. In the Senior Bowl, he proved that he is the elite center in this draft and probably the best center prospect of the past 5 years.

Not a big fan of Heyward-Bey. He more than likely won't be 'ready' to start on the outside for at least 2 years, and even then who knows if he'll learn to catch the ball with his hands. The Colts biggest problem this season was in stopping the run. Having Quinn Pitcock quit just before the season started was a huge problem. They need to get some talent to take pressure off Freeney and Jerry is it. He's very good in both run stopping and pass rushing, excelling in the latter.

I considered a WR like Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt. I also thought of a CB since I've read they're considering moving toward a more press coverage type defense but none of the guys left on the board seem to fit.

Andy gets it. I was just kidding about it being a poison pill. My guess is he made a quick pick without realizing it and stepped away. Now it is either wait for an undetermined amount of time or replace the pick.
