Shaun Alexander (1 Viewer)

From Seahawks Insider:

In a rather confusing interview after the Seahawks' 95-minute, indoor practice, Shaun Alexander said that he is changing his running style this week from hitting the hole TOO hard to reading what the linemen are doing and being more patient. Here is the audiolink of some of his comments. They are actually answers to two questions, and you can hear the second question begin to be asked before I cut it off for time purposes. (Remember, we can only play 45 seconds of audio.) Most everybody walked away from the interview thinking, "Huh?" primarily because the criticism of Alexander this year, including from Mike Holmgren, is that Alexander is dancing around too much and not hitting the hole hard enough. In any case, take a listen and make your own judgment.
The audio link there is really poor but he basically said he has been hitting the hole harder and more often than he has in "probably all my seasons combined" and that he has to go back to playing the way he used to, his way. Is he ####### serious?! The Bill's punter has hit more holes harder this year than Shaun Crumpler. The absolute LAST thing he needs to do is be more patient and dance behind the line until a hole opens up. He's gonna get booed all the way to Tacoma if he tries this crap Sunday. He truly sounds in this audio cli[ and other statements like a man completely out of touch with reality, repeatedly stating that if you watch the film he's running the same as always and he's doing well. Complete denial. Maybe it comes from growing up in the South and learning revisionist history.

I think he has looked good given the bad OL play and the bad passing game. Some people are much too quick to judge and throw someone to the curb.

You have no idea what you're talking about, evidenced by the "bad passing game" comment. Except for the Pitt game (where no one was open because they had zero respect for SA) Hass has had a pretty good, though not great year. Top 5 in yards, top 7 in TDs, top 9 in ypg and above 90 passer rating (also top 10) All stats include the PIT game, btw. And all of it with a mediocre at best running game. If that's a "bad passing game" I'd like to see what you consider good. I've seen every single game he's played, give or take 1 or 2 when I was at Charger games. SA is running like the biggest pansy I have ever witnessed take the field. Every single RB in pro or college (and some punters) is running the ball harder than SA is this year. When he even feels contact he stops his feet and heads to the ground in a lump. This is NOT the contract year SA who got 15/17 3rd and 1 conversions. And while the run blocking has been poor, a $52 million man ought to at least be able to make something out of nothing occasionally. And the gimp wrist is a ridiculous excuse for his lack of heart, vision and effort. It doesn't affect his legs.I think it's clear who's making the too quick judgment without benefit of thought, research, or fact.

I'm speechless.

Well. Here comes STL. At home. Let's see how many excuses people can make for him on Sunday. He's gonna try harder people. Or...I guess, not as hard.

whatever.

The only people making excuses for SA is...SA. Even Holmgren has bagged a little on his soft running style this season.

Pushed him off in a deal for MBIII and couldn't be happier. I got so disgusted watching him to see how poorly he would contribute to my team that I couldn't deal with him anywhere.

Odd as it sounds, the Rams did a pretty good against Willis MaGahee last week.

I hear you in your criticism of Alexander but I think we need to keep in mind that this has ALWAYS been Alexander running style. He has never been a violent runner in the sense that he initiated contact - and he has always gone down pretty easily. Nor has he ever had the speed to just beat a defense to the outside. I think there a couple of things that make Shaun different this year: Alexander himself admits he has always been a guy about getting the TD - a beast in the redzone. But it's hard to score when the Seahawks aren't in the redzone - or at least when he isn't getting the redzone carries- he hasn't had one in the last two games and on average he's getting half as many this year than in previous years. It's not something I want out of my runningback - only motivated by the TD - but it's made him very effective in the redzone.

His O-line - I think that this is what he is referring to in the above quote. With a newer line playing together, they have asked Shaun to go back to basics:

"With a new team, you want to go do basic stuff: If the hole is in the 'A' gap, go run in the 'A' gap," Alexander said. "That hasn't been working for our group. I'm just going to go back to making the plays happen."
I'm guessing that this is what he means when he says he is hitting the holes harder this year. With his previous O-lines he could take more chances with cutting back or improvising when the designated hole wasn't there. I think he means he will go back to this approach when he says he will be more patient - letting holes (not necessarily where designed) develop and then making his move.I'm not trying to defend him - nor do I necessarily agree that this is what he needs to do but just trying to add some context to the statement.

If Shaun does not bounce back this weekend against a pitiful St Louis defense then he stays on my bench.

I believe Shaun will break out and be ok the rest of the way. Obviously not an RB1 type of back anymore but i like many just need him to be a good RB2. And he has not even been that thus far other than the first 2 weeks of the year.

taylor used the "try harder" schtick on kid nation and it didnt work out too good for her

hey SA no one cares to hear. lets see it. :football:

I gotta give props to the The KUBIAK Pro Football Prospectus guys. They nailed this one. They predicted he'd fall of a cliff.

Watching him play it is obvious that SA is a shell of his former self. He looks horrible. The reasons are debatable (there are certainly multiple factors) but the results are clear.

SA has no doubt earned his due but I must say that, if he were not who he is, he would not even be deserving of starting on his own team (much less a fantasy team) based solely on his performance thus far. SA tortured owners last year but had the "madden curse" excuse. This year we have to dig a little deeper to find excuses. Again, whatever the reasons, the rusults are what they are.

The typical run is to jog one yard sideways then fall down when someone grabs him by the shoelace. All in all it's a pretty sad scene to witness this amazingly quick fall from eliteness to being a liability for fantasy owners.

If he can't get it going this week against the Lambs swiss cheese run D...put a fork in him folks.

And if he does, people will say it was the defense. I've made this point before in one of the other half dozen SA fell off a cliff threads, but his numbers are similar to Curtis Martin's in 03 at this point and people were saying the same thing about Martin. He went on to gain 1300 yards that year and over 1600 the next.

I remember the way Martin ran and the way Sa runs is nowhere the same. He runs like a china doll little girl afraid to get touched by the big bad bogey men. He's making Tatum Bell look like a pro-bowler. I'm not saying he's hit some nebulous age barrier, because he's low mielage for his age with all the crumpling he's done in his career. I'm saying he has not heart or guts. Martin had guts, he wanted to gain those yards. SA looks like a guy who just wants to cash checks and doesn't see anything wrong with his efforts thus far other than they aren't working. The idea that HE has to try harder doesn't come out in his interviews. He feels like he's giving the effort. But he's just clearly not.

I remember how Martin ran those first six weeks in 03 and Alexander looks remarkably similar as does the team offense. Too many people here think it is all about the individual player (the stud or the Dud) and this is a result of fantasy football. Seattle offense isn't getting the ball into the red zone enough for TD attempts and the passing game isn't effective enough and last week the team fell behind early so the running game was abandoned. I don't see a player who is doing anything different; I just see a team that is a lot worse. But I guess we will have to agree to disagree.Incidentally, here are Martin's 03 stats through the first seven weeks:1 was | 15 48 | -7 | 0 || 2 mia | 10 32 | -2 | 0 || 3 nwe | 15 53 | 34 | 0 || 4 dal | 21 64 | 51 | 0 || 6 buf | 20 77 | 0 | 0 || 7 hou | 17 88 | 1 | 0 |He had a 3.69 ypc and no TDs98/362/0For Comparison, here are Alexanders this year: 1 tam | 27 105 | 12 | 1 || 2 ari | 18 70 | 5 | 1 || 3 cin | 21 100 | 8 | 0 || 4 sfo | 25 78 | 5 | 0 || 5 pit | 11 25 | 7 | 0 || 6 nor | 14 35 | 0 | 0 |+----------+-------------+--------+----+| TOTAL | 116 413 | 37 | 2 |Alexander's ypc is 3.56 but he has 2 TDs.Say what you like about how you remember someone running, but the statistics through the first seven weeks ( a meaningful sample size) are almost exactly the same. And, as noted, Martin went on to have a good year, a great year, and an ok year.Alexander has two more TDs than Martin had and

"revisionist history" lol

you mean like the war of northern aggresion or the war for states rights.....

I keep waiting for the SA i remember from years past, but it may be over. He carried me for several years......

the south will rise again..................

What does his religious affiliation have anything to do with his performance on the field?? :blackdot:
Nothing. Please point out to me where I said that it did. Simply a descriptor so that I could add the comedian part to the subtitle since it's well known that he is very religious. And also please point out to me where I implied that it was bad and deserving of a thumbs down.

Swiss cheese run D? They haven't given up a 100 yard rushing day yet this season. Further, their pass D has allowed only one 300 yard day and only two 200+ yard passing days so for this year.

You used the term "Jesus-Freak". You have to know that most Christians don't look on that as a term of endearment. Further, you're equating being a Christian to Comedy. I generally don't side with Christians, but I can understand why they might take offense to your title.

Does that mean that I am associating Christians and multi millionaires too? Or how about comedians and multi millionaires? The comma separates the titles and there was clearly no correlation between the two unless you agree with associating multi millionaire with the other 2 titles as well. And saying that I was equating comedy and christianity is just plain ignorant.

I was trying to explain why a Christian might take offense. You labeled a player as a "Jesus-Freak". You're were using the term in a derogatory manner. Don't be surprised when you get called on it. Don't look now, but the vast majority of people out there in your neighborhood call themselves Christians. No need to sling "ignorant" around. I guess I should know better than to try and mediate between anonymous entities. Its replies like this that keep me from participating more on boards. People say offense stuff all the time. I got called on it earlier today and saw that what I typed was pretty bad and so I admitted as such. Why can't more people do this? Does it just come down to saving face?

How was I using it in a derogatory manner?! Unless calling someone a multi millionaire is also being derogatory. The emphasis was on comedian, not the millionaire or JF. Perhaps it's your reading comprehension that is (or should be) keeping you out of board stuff. Not once did I make any inference of a desultory nature towards Christians or anyone other than SA. Just because you or some other ignorant reader takes offense at something that is not offensive doesn't make the statement derogatory. Just means you're overly sensitive to insults that aren't there.

How about you wait until somebody actually gets offended before you go jumping to the defense of the innocent?I haven't watched SA play this year-is it really him? I've always been under the impression (right or wrong) that he wasn't the toughest of guys. Why is this year so different? Is it him? The o-line? Something else?

oh jesus....Pipe down Martha! Its a football discussion, and nothing was meant by the comment. Don't go so off the deepend for something that wasn't meant to be derogatory...To bring this back on topic, SA sucks. I was at Qwest last week when the fans were booing him, and was shocked at the display! He has lost the fans, I would be shocked if he is back with the hawks next season. Once the crowd turns on a player, its over.

Ok, I can see now how you could possibly get confused from that quote. However, the millionaire, jesus freak and comedian are all separate concepts. I used the descriptors of mm, and jf so I could set up the 3rd descriptor as the punchline because when taken in context with the content of the original post, it is clear that I think SA is being a comedian with his comments. The 3 labels in my subtitle are unrelated to each other. Your reading comprehension skills aren't as bad as I thought although they are still quite poor, unless you feel that I think all Christians are also multimillionaire comedians. Context is a wonderful thing.

Where's he going to go?! Hell be in the 3rd year of a blockbuster contract. Can't cut him for cap reasons, can't trade him with that contract especially if he keeps playing the way he does. And I sincerely doubt he'll take a pay cut to go suck somewhere else. The Seattle FO screwed up big time for the second time in 2 off seasons when they gave him that deal. It's tough to decide whether the Hutch or SA scenarios were the bigger screw up, though I am leaning towards SA since the cap issues his contract will create will screw us with our own FAs in the next few years. Especially since we have several stud defensive players coming up soon, like Trufant next year and Tatupu the next (I believe).

Gosh, I hope I didn't have any imaginary insults in that paragraph...

I got called on it earlier today and saw that what I typed was pretty bad and so I admitted as such. Why can't more people do this? Does it just come down to saving face?
oh jesus....Pipe down Martha!

What is the cap hit if he is cut next year? I thought the contract was front loaded for the first 2 seasons, no?

If he can't get it going this week against the Lambs swiss cheese run D...put a fork in him folks.
Swiss cheese run D? They haven't given up a 100 yard rushing day yet this season. Further, their pass D has allowed only one 300 yard day and only two 200+ yard passing days so for this year.
I have watched every Ram game this year. While I'll grant you there are reasons to be optimistic with regard to improvements in certain positions such as Kariker at nose tackle, overall this squad has been pourous. The numbers...The Lambs have allowed over 2028 total yards (26th) with 807 on the ground (29th) and have allowed 159 points (30th). I would classify that in the swiss cheese arena.SA has historically owned the Rams. In SA's last five games verse them he's hung 6 TD's and averaged over 150 yards. The track record is great in this matchup so it should be a good indicator of just where he is now.

What does his religious affiliation have anything to do with his performance on the field?? :goodposting:
Nothing. Please point out to me where I said that it did. Simply a descriptor so that I could add the comedian part to the subtitle since it's well known that he is very religious. And also please point out to me where I implied that it was bad and deserving of a thumbs down.
I am sure it was and I don't have the figures but I read some articles in the past about how his cap implications will affect FA signings in the next 2 seasons. I don't recall where the articles were but those 2 names were the mentioned in both articles I read.

he's finished. 2.5 per carry against the freaking rams :moneybag:

looks like re-building time for my keeper league team. Id take anything for him at this point

I hate to say it as an SA owner, but today was the nail in the coffin. He is officially a bust this year. Just horrible. Hopefully KJ continues to play like he did today and can take SA's spot with no problem.

who is KJ?

You guys are nuts. SA won my game for me today by 1...Shaun, I want to personally thank you for gutting out that 40th yd. rushing. It was a beauty, and without you and your hard work, I would have obviously lost.

Is this guy done? I mean, he can be had on the cheap but I'm not sure he's worth even that. Is he going to lose more carries?

I think he has one more 120yd 2td game this season, But he probably has another 3 or 4 games that look like todays.

AND it earns him a 100 yards...in 3 games. Looking good Shaun. Ran hard in the 1st quarter and then just starting sliding back to his weak ways until finally he loses 8 or so on a stupid "cutback" instead of following the blockers and grinding out 3 yards. But hey, technically 40 yards is better than his 30 ypg average the last 2 weeks. Now that's progress!

When it was time to run down the clock they were giving carries to Weaver, Morris and SA. More carries for Morris than usual. So I think it's safe to say that SA's monopoly on carries may be dwindling.

How is "Jesus-Freak" offensive to a Christian? Wouldn't most Christians consider that a compliment? I mean...being a Jesus Freak is kind of the point of the whole thing unless I've missed something. :excited: Either, who cares what the subtitle is, let's not post in here like Alexander runs and get all sensitive and girly about stuff, ok? Oh, and to non-FFA this post, Alexander's running terribly. Horribly. It's embarassing. I'd much rather go with a combo of weaver/morris at this point in time. Heck, I'd take Ruth over Alexander, she showed way more heart than Shaun.

Seriously? Some random person on the internet referring to a man who's very public about his faith as a "Jesus Freak" is going to keep you from participating on more boards? It might be time to see the dermatologist about some dermis thickening.
