Great line (bold below) from a blog that I've been reading for a couple years & got some notice here last season -- Mark St. Amant's (former FBG'er I think, led the pack in WCOFF almost 'til the end last season, etc.) NY Times.com FF column...he had a piece today on random mock draft trends/thoughts, wrote this about Merriman...

• Do not, repeat, do not take a defense early. Nearly every year, there are a few scant points difference between the #1 defense and the #10 defense. And now that Shawn Merriman, the heart and soul of the consensus No. 1 defense, the Chargers, is most likely out for the season –- he has received three opinions that he have season-ending surgery, and yet is idiotically seeking a fourth opinion, likely from this guy –- there’s less motivation than ever to be the first in your draft to snag a defense. Instead, spend that eighth-round pick on a high upside running back or receiver (e.g. Felix Jones or Robert Meacham, both of whom have been available in that eighth- or ninth-round range).

Agreed. Sometimes these guys need to turn off the competitive fire and use their heads. Hard to do, being pros in a violent, competitive sport, but still..guy's young and very talented (even when not on HGH), no need to risk his entire future.

If Dr. Nick doesn't tell him what he wants to hear, he'll be on his way to Ecuador for a 5th opinion. What a tool. At some point, his teammates have to start thnking, "Look, Lights Out, we'll miss you and all, but we need to move on and groom whoever your replacement's going to be versus wringing our hands and crossing our fingers that you'll be back..."

A) You may be f*cking with me and pretending to be clueless re: defenses, in which case, wow, not sure why you'd go to that trouble, but that's some good comedy...gold, Jerry, gold....B) If not, yes, in the mocks I've done top 10 has typically been SD, MIN, CHI, SEA, NE, BAL, DAL, GB, TEN, ARI....with JAX, BUF, PIT sometimes thrown in there.

hey, i hear ya there...totally agree that you should let your league mates grin and gloat when they snag the bears or vikes in the 8th/9th while you're loading up on upside wrs and rbs...have never taken a K or D early, just silly. not enough points difference between the top picks and middle picks, unless someone has a crazy neil rackers kinda year.

i've now seen SD dropping under MIN, CHI, SEA and sometimes even NE in mocks today....and the giants are slipping too (post-umenyiora)...can you guys think of any other defenses where losing ONE guy would affect their value so much?
