Shooting in Ottawa (1 Viewer)

There's so much conflicting info right now.

CTV now saying Jason Kenney (the soldier) is not confirmed to have died, despite tweets he was.

Police not confirming the first gunman in parliament was killed, even though it's been widely reported he was all morning.

Still an active shooter situation according to police but apparently they don't know how many suspects they're looking for.

Sounds like what happens after every major event.

Toronto Maple Leafs players were staying at the Westin, which is above the Rideau Centre where one of the reported shootings took place.

Not sure who in here has been to Ottawa downtown/parliament area, but for a major city, it's a very small/condensed downtown area. Usually so safe, you can walk on the lawn of Parliament hill any time with no security (there are checkpoints with metal detectors to get inside the actual buildings).

AP just said that shots also fired at shopping mall near Parliament.
Now they are saying "at least" 3 separate shooting incidents near Parliament. Yikes.
ISIS? :tinfoilhat:
This was actually what I thought. Maybe not the real ISIS, but some Canadian citizens that want to be part of ISIS.
Read one blurb about the gunman on loose that they were securing border between Ontario and Quebec. I thought maybe they were insinuating it was a Quebec separatist.

They're saying no incident in Rideau Centre, just parliament hill/building. If that's the case, single shooter is possible. One shooter was killed there (from the video that was posted earlier) though, so if he was killed, who have they been looking for for the past 3 hours?

RCMP Press Conference leads me to believe this may be bigger than they want to let the public know... they keep calling it 'fluid', 'dynamic', 'unfolding'... all of which say it isn't over. That plus the fact that military are being advised not to wear their uniforms and Canadian forces bases all on lock down isn't good. They won't answer the question of whether there is a second suspect.

Summary of press conference:

- Situation is fluid and ongoing.

- Ottawa Police Chief Statement.

  • Victim at war memorial injuries were fatal
  • Incident at parliament hill - a male suspect now deceased
  • Situation is ongoing - public asked to stay away from downtown core
  • Looking for witnesses to come forward with any information.
- RCMP statement.

  • Situation is still unfolding, they have opened up a tip line.
  • Full resources of RCMP activated - they are controlling Parliament building investigations, Ottawa Police the rest of the city.
  • Until situation is under control Canadian military being asked to stay in their buildings, not wear military uniforms.
  • Canadian Armed Forced Bases are under lockdown.
- Q/A

  • RCMP still trying to identify person killed.
  • When asked directly if there was 2nd suspect - all they say is "still in process of investigation... still in process of clearing parliament hill"

Here's the Reuters update.

I'm not able to watch television, but based on this it looks like one gunman, who is now dead. The police are looking for other suspects, but I'm guessing that's routine in such situations. I think (hope) this was just one crazy nut. Who knows what his motive was? Maybe terrorism, maybe separatism, maybe some personal grudge. Anyhow, he's dead.

Sad day for Canadian's I live about 6 hours away. Can't remember anything like this in my life time. I really don't like the world we live in anymore.

Some pretty crappy comments in here.

Suspect named: link

Great city, very beautiful. Canadians always seem so calm and level headed in their policies, at least that's my perception. Will be curious to see how they react.

Interesting enough there is an article up in the star and apparently there has been numerous type shootings/bombings of Canadian legislative buildings over the last 40 years

I am deeply saddened by today’s horrific events here in Ottawa, and unreservedly condemn these brutal and heartless acts of violence.

This attack is unforgivable. Should any other perpetrators or co-conspirators exist, they must be caught and be punished to the full force of our laws. I’ve extended an offer of full support to the government, along with any assistance members of our party can provide at this time.

My thoughts and prayers, along with those of my colleagues, go out to the family and friends of the victims of today’s horrific shooting, including Corporal Nathan Frank Cirillo, who was standing dutifully, guarding one of our nation’s most sacred monuments.

Words cannot express the deep sadness we feel today over his loss.

To the brave women and men who rushed to the scene to confront the shooter, and help keep us safe, I can say only thank you. Thank you for your selfless courage and your professionalism in a time of crisis.

In the days that follow, there will be questions, anger and perhaps confusion. This is natural, but we cannot let it get the better of us. Losing ourselves to fear and speculation is the intention of those who commit these heinous acts.

They mean to shake us. We will remain resolved.

They want us to forget ourselves. Instead, we should remember.

We should remember who we are. We are a proud democracy, a welcoming and peaceful nation, and a country of open arms and open hearts. We are a nation of fairness, justice and the rule of law.

We will not be intimidated into changing that.

If anything, these are the values and principles to which we must hold on even tighter. Our dedication to democracy and the institutions we have built is the foundation of our society. And a continued belief in both will guide us correctly into the future. Staying true to our values in a time of crisis will make us an example to the world.

Criminals cannot and will not dictate to us how we act as a nation, how we govern ourselves or how we treat each other. They cannot and will not dictate our values. And they do not get to decide how we use our shared public spaces.

Today we heard about a loss of innocence in Canada. This is inaccurate. Canada is not innocent to the threats we face, and we know that we are not immune. What is true is that we have not let those threats shape us, and we have never bowed to those who mean to undermine our values and way of life.

We have remained Canadians. And this should be how we will carry on.

We deserve answers to how and why this happen. They will be vital in preventing any potential future attack.

To our friends and fellow citizens in the Muslim community, Canadians know acts such as these committed in the name of Islam are an aberration of your faith. Continued mutual cooperation and respect will help prevent the influence of distorted ideological propaganda posing as religion. We will walk forward together, not apart.

In the coming days, we will be inundated with pictures and videos showing what happened today. But there is one in particular we should remember: the picture in our minds we have of a Canadian guarding Canadians. That is who we truly are. That is who we will continue to be. -Justin Trudeau

Is there any indication this is anything more than a lone gunman?

Other than his race?

Hoping later that they show there was information to make this link otherwise.....media :(

I was hoping that it was just some crazy with a personal grudge but it isn't. The shooter had converted to Islam. He wanted to go join ISIS but had his passport revoked.

This was an act of terrorism. It appears to be in retaliation for Canada's parliament voting to join us in our air assault against ISIS. Leaders from ISIS have already praised this guy and called for more. Once again radical Islam manages to distinguish itself from all other religions.

Ditto...My biggest fear is terrorists starting to just randomly shoot up places. It's much more live-able when it's just a random crazy guy.

What I don't get is this influx of people wanting to join ISIS's ranks...I mean, I feel like every day there is a story of some US Citizen who was caught trying to join ISIS.
