Several years ago I was using it for connecting with some gamers I was in a group with. That part was successful in that it allowed us to have a "private group conversation" outside of the "in game chat". On our team, we had a possible troll/ fake account from a group that was in competition with our top guy and was maybe trying to poach him/ troll him or was just some random superfan. It was really weird.
In the general discord chat for the game I was trying to learn more about, it was an absolute **** show of memes and folks trashing others. Most folks knew who the others in the forum were but 80% of communication consisted of pepe the frog memes and the like. It was bizarre and hard to understand. I'm sure those gamers have found new memes but coherent advancement of thought didn't seem to be the prevailing theme.
I doubt I'll give it a try again but you never know.
FWIW, Joe (I give you a lot of credit, I'm a fan and this is not meant to be bashing you), the question/ timing of starting this thread gave the impression that you were "considering it, and valued the input of this group." which clearly you were beyond "considering it" so therefore the notion that you were asking some valued resource their opinion as a component of making a decision was, in fact not how you were making the decision. I don't give a fig whether or now you consult me about having a discord but the phrasing of the question IMO could easily have been clearer, in terms of the feedback you were seeking.
"We're planning to have a discord server, do you-- a know what it is, b would plan to use" yadda yadda.
Hey hon, should we have tacos for dinner?
I dunno, burgers or Chinese sound better to me.
OK cool, thanks for your input, we're having tacos.
OK well, why'd you ask me? I don't really care that much what we have for dinner but.. why'd you ask?
I was curious about how you feel about tacos for dinner.
You find it fascinating that I'm in the mood for burgers or Chinese?
Yup. I already bought the stuff for the tacos and prepped all of the veggies.
So then why didn't you say "Hey, we're having tacos?"
I dunno, I just really was curious what you were thinking.
I would have been a lot happier if you'd just said "we're having tacos."
