Should the Giants rest their players in week 17? (1 Viewer)

There are two trains of thought on this. Either rest your starters to avoid potential meaningless injuries, or play everyone to keep momentum going for the playoffs. I think there is another reason the Giants should play everyone. Knocking off the Patriouts would be something that fans would remember for a long, long time.

I don't think the Giants really have a chance of making an extended run in the playoffs with Eli at QB. However, if they get everything together for one game and beat the Pats, it could be their legacy. I think this game is even bigger than the playoffs for the Giants. Everyone still remembers that the Dolphins beat the 85 Bears to ruin their chance at a perfect season. This could be something similar for the Giants. Of course, I don't give a crap about the Giants, so it may be that their fans feel entirely dffierent about this. It would be nice to hear from some homers.

Tough call. I'm a Giants fan and think they don't have a chance even with playing everyone.

Burress is banged up and needs to rest.

Toomer is old and could use the rest.

Brandon Jacobs turned his ankle and could use the rest.

Shockey is out.

With that being said, if they are all resting, why put Manning out there....who's he going to throw to?

I think they rest and worry about Tampa Bay.

You put Mannng out there because he needs the work. He hasn't earned any time off.

And lose what little confidence the guy has left? The first team can barely make plays for the guy, you think the second teamers will?

They have to play their starters, barring any blow out. The Pats will be risking injury to gain perfection, the giants should be equally motivated to stop that from happening. Eli really needs a lot of work, and it would be a great boost for their D to hold the Pats in check while advancing into the playoffs. They locked up their spot but I would not be very confident heading into the playoffs. This game has a lot of implications for them, if they can beat the Pats then they can beat anyone. They need this game.

Quit babying this guy, throw him in the fire, if he burns he burns. He is the QB, he is the one that is suppose to make plays.

Why do you think it's only those 2 trains of thought? In reality it will probably be somewhere in between. They will probably rest their banged up starters, such as Jacobs and Burress, and play everyone else. Guys like Pierce and Strahan may also rest but I would still expect to see a number of starters playing. Also, do you really think the Giants are taking the approach that they have no chance in the playoffs so they had better treat this game as their playoffs? This game isn't bigger than the playoffs and no team would ever take that approach. Every team believes they have a chance in the playoffs and it's ridiculous to think otherwise. Why even bother playing at all if they didn't think they have a chance?

Yea, you're probably right. If they have a chance to beat the Pats, then they also must have a chance to advance in the playoffs. Anything can happen. That being said, if you could somehow choose to either beat the Pats and get knocked it the first playoff game or lose to the Pats and win one playoff game, which would you choose? What if it were two playoff victories, which would you choose?

Why should the Giants be motivated from stopping this? They should be motivated to win the game because it would help them get into the playoffs and maybe increase their seed but with nothing on the line and having people banged up wouldnt it make sense to rest those players to get ready for Tampa? Using your line of thought then the Cowboys should play all their starters to try and keep the Redskins out of the playoffs and the Colts to try and knock out tenn. All scenarios dont make any sense by keeping their starters in the game. FWIW i doubt the Pats keep their starters in long as well. I think the people that care most about going undefeated are fans and media.

If I had to choose between the 2, I would choose to knock off the Patriots for obvious reasons. My point is that nobody ever believes they will get knocked out early in the playoffs, so they will do their best to prepare for a Super Bowl run and not worry about anything else.

Until yesterday, I had the same belief. However, watching Brady in the game late against Miami sure looked to me like he wanted to grab that passing TD record at home. I think, although they are smart enough not to spout off in the media, that this team does want the perfect season, and the passing & receiving TD records. I'd be very surprised to see the starters sit before the half, and if they don't get their 2 TD tosses to Moss by then, then I'd be surprised to see them sit before the 4th Q.I don't much mind, because I do think that sitting out week 17 would effectively be 3 weeks without any game action, and thats too much. I just pray for no injuries.

I'm not going to dig up some old threads during the season but in multiple threads about the Patriots, my thought has always been that IF the Patriots lose this season, it'll be week 17 in NY Giants.

My thinking at the time had the Giants playing for something, whether it be a division title or some type of field advantage but that's not the case.

I still think the Giants are going to be tough to beat. The weather could be bad.....and when I look at the Patriots, even though people perceive them as some cold weather team, they have had some of their worst games in bad weather.

The Giants when playing well, are actually formidable. They have an offense that can move the ball and lately, they've had a big bruising running back that could grind up clock if the situation ever presented itself.

However, the Giants defense is made for NE to pick apart. Their pass rush isn't great and their secondary is below average, which is why the weather needs to be bad if NY stands a chance.

I do know this, if NY Giants go into that game with the mindset that it's OK to lose that game, they will get pounded in week 1 of the playoffs. They haven't played all that great and they could use this huge confidence boost of either playing NE well or even pulling off an upset.

I know that if the Giants did beat NE, I'm sure they'd earn the respect of many players and teams around the league for not laying down, but manning up when you don't HAVE to.

If I was the coach, I'd think over everything Coughlin has to think about, but then in the end......I'd say let's go out and beat those ****** in our house.

I'd be nervous of Jacobs' ankles and/or any other injury.

Him being such a big brute RB in the cold weather could be a big playoff advantage to give away in a meaningless game.

I don't think Bradshaw can carry the team but...let's see

Actually, they don't need this game.

The giants need to sit the players that are actually hurt. Burress, Jacobs..not sure who else.
