Sidney Rice undergoes hip surgery (1 Viewer)

Is it possible Rice and the doctors knew all along he needed surgery but delayed the news until Favre was back in the fold? :goodposting:
I dont understand why he waited this long either. He had hip problems in the spring, and 2 of 3 doctors reccommended surgery. I suspect the fact he is only making .55 Million this year has something to do with it. Why risk further injury in a contract year. Its basically like using the 2009 season as his contract year. If he gets hurt, or plays worse than he did in 2009, it could cost him alot of money.I would bet he comes back at some point this season though to at least prove he is healthy and worthy of a big juicy contract.
ESPN asked Favre today if he would have come back had he known Rice could be out for half the year:"I don't know that for certain," he answered.
If he was worried about Favre not coming back, just have the surgery in June. He would have been back by week 1 that way. As a matter of fact, him and Favre could have shown up to camp together hand in hand last week.
I don't know that it's that easy. This is hip surgery. He'll be on crutches for six to eight weeks without any activity. THEN he would have to rehab. Whenever you're talking about an injury like this, the "8 weeks" is just a ballpark. There's absolutely no guarantee Rice would have been right for the start of the season,, in fact I would say the odds were against it and then he's probably a candidate for PUP and who knows what else.

I'm not sure why anyone would remove him from their board completely, even in league's with shallow rosters. I mean, if he's sitting there in the last round, why not take him, IR him, and hope for the best? Then just fill that last roster spot with a FA. Hell, just don't take a kicker or defense, then once Rice is IRed, pick one up.

I can see dropping him way down, that's a given. But to completely cross him off of your board is a mistake.

I took him in the late rounds of draft last night, and I'm perfectly comfortable with the move. I already had all of my starters and solid backups in place, why not take a gamble? Worst case, it's a wasted pick, but it's no different than "wasting" a pick on a sleeper who doesn't pan out, or a handcuff who never hits the field because the starter never gets injured. And best case, you have a potential stud for the stretch run, fantasy playoffs.

Now, I'm certainly not condoning putting yourself in a situation where you are counting on Rice to produce, but if you have all your ducks in a row (have already put together a solid team that you're confident will contend), he is definitely worth a late round pick IMO.

Well, for one thing, not all leagues have IRs. Mine typically don't.

I took him late. But its a very deep league with 20 rounds.

Fair point. If there is no IR spot and rather shallow benches, it changes things. But even then, I think he's worth taking a flier on in the last round and stashing if possible. Obviously, if a need comes up and you need the roster spot, drop him. But there is little risk in holding onto him if your team is performing and remains injury free.

(RotoWire) Rice (knee) was placed on the reserve/PUP list and will miss at least the first six weeks of the season, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Analysis: Rice had expressed some hope he could return for the team's fifth game, but the Vikings didn't want to hold an active roster spot for him for that long. Rice is expected to be out until at least late October after hip surgery.

Obviously a better result than straight IR. In leagues with deep benches or IR slots, he's a definite stash for a 2nd half run.

PUP guys bother me. Has anyone ever come back from the PUP list to be a relevant fantasy player in the second half?I remember the year Anquan Boldin started the year on the PUP list (2004). He came back, started 9 games, but was a shell of his usual self. I drafted him and carried him on my roster all that time, so maybe I'm jaded about these guys.

True, but Boldin also had Josh McCown, Shaun King and John Navarre playing QB during his 9 games
