Sidney Rice (1 Viewer)

I have Rice in a couple PPR leagues and I'm pretty high on his potential. We've seen that he has sick hand-eye coordination, body control, and jump ball skills. The only thing I wonder about is whether or not he'll be able to beat corners on the short and intermediate routes. The answer to that question should determine whether he becomes a top 15 type WR in the NFL or just a decent NFL WR2.
I think he can. He ran pretty good routes for a rookie and he has good lateral quickness that makes up for his lack of track speed (which still isn't terrible, like has been pointed out).

As great as Peterson is the Vikings need to become more creative in the passing game or they will get him killed. Rice came out young and very raw. Hopefully he will get good coaching. It appears that Rice has a good work ethic and the right attitude to get the most out of his skills.

Obviously Rice's potential is linked to his QB. Any Minny homers have any input as to whether they believe the Vikings will be patient with Jackson and the job is his or might they bring in another QB to challenge him?

I think he's a lot like Keyshawn Johnson. Their body sizes are nearly identical and both had good hands and body control while neither is a blazer speed-wise.

I don't think he's the headcase that Key is though.
:goodposting: Although I think that Rice has a bit more downfield speed than people give him credit for.
 Rice doesnt have track speed, but he has good enough pad speed. He's much more agile than Key and is one of the sickest leapers in the NFL. Key was also way more physical. Rice is not going to push anyone around or block them out, he's just going sky and contort his body in a way that you can't stop him from making the catch unless you mug him on the way up in his leap. Rice is going to be one of the great high wire/trapeze act type WRs in the league. If he becomes a solid route runner that can go over the middle and make some things happen after the catch, he could be special. He's got exceptional ups, body control, and that "my ball" mentality that is the difference between the good and great WRs.

He's the 2nd best reason to watch the Vikes on any given Sunday, and some days, he'll be the best.
What do you think his upside is for next 2-3 seasons? Think he can have a Baby TO 08'? I dont think the situation is right for him, and I think you wait a year on the buy let someone else roster him, invest your money instead in AGonzoJR or even Mark Clayton and then come back to rice in a year or three.
I wouldn't expect more than about 800/6 next season. After that there's no way of telling.Bloom, can we say that Rice's game might be Randy Moss-esqe? I'm not saying he's as good as Moss, obviously, but his game resembles the enigmantic one, no?
In the red zone, he is most definitely Moss-esque. He doesnt have that effortless fifth gear Moss has, but "above the rim" they are very similar guys. I do think Rice could develop into even more with time, but he'll never have Moss's jets - few that have ever played the game could match Moss stride for stride.

Rice = Burress
Can you say hyperbole?
Rice is going to be far better than Burress...

Sidney Rice burst on the scene with a sensational red shirt freshman season in 2005, earning First Team SEC honors after posting over 1,100 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. He followed that with a solid 2006 season in which he notched over 1,000 yards receiving again and caught 10 touchdowns despite a chaotic quarterback situation. Rice enters the 2007 NFL Draft after his sophomore season as one of the top WR prospects available. The War Room Report's Chris Otwell discussed his career at South Carolina and the NFL Draft process with Sidney Rice.

Chris Otwell, War Room Report: Were you pleased with your performance at the Scouting Combine?

Sidney Rice: I think I did a pretty good job, I was happy with how everything went for me.

Chris Otwell, War Room Report: What did you do to prepare yourself for the combine, both mentally and physically?

Sidney Rice: I was out at the Arizona Athlete’s Performance, working on the explosiveness, helping to prepare myself for the 40, vertical, and other drills.

Chris Otwell, War Room Report: How did the interview process go?

Sidney Rice: A good bit of teams interviewed me, I'd say about 20 teams. I think all of them went well.

Chris Otwell, War Room Report: Your freshman year, with QB Blake Mitchell throwing to you, you were Rivals.com freshman of the year, and All-SEC. How did it affect you this past season with Mitchell out?

Sidney Rice: I think it did affect me a little bit this year. I think I had a decent season, but it could have been much better. Things went how they went, nothing I can change about that now. The QB that stepped in did a good job, I just think that me and Blake had more chemistry, and that’s how it went down this year.

Chris Otwell, War Room Report: You are entering the draft after your red shirt sophomore season, did Coach Spurrier, and WR Coach Spurrier Jr. help you with your decision on turning pro early, and what did you learn from Coach Spurrier during your time with him at South Carolina?

Sidney Rice: Oh yes, I think that Coach Spurrier is a tremendous coach, he taught me a lot of things while I was there about playing football and knowing what to do while you are on the field, and also about being a leader. I just think the experience to be able to play for a coach of his caliber knowing the offense, and coaching Heisman winners and championship teams, as well as having other top draft picks play for him was tremendous.

Chris Otwell, War Room Report: How did the firing of your recruiter and contact at South Carolina influence your decision in regards to signing with the Gamecocks, if at all, and do you think that prepared you at all for the “business” that the NFL is said to be?

Sidney Rice: I understand it is going to be a business, when he got fired I stuck with the decision to go to Carolina. I wanted to be close where my family could come watch me play, and also friends of mine. I wouldn’t say it had me thinking about changing my mind.

Chris Otwell, War Room Report: You were the South Carolina basketball player of the year after leading Gaffney High School to the state championship. Was basketball an option in college, and where were you recruited for your basketball talents?

Sidney Rice: Yes sir it was an option, and I was recruited to play basketball. I was supposed to play basketball for the USC, but I didn’t. If I had gone to Syracuse, it would have been the same thing. I decided not to play after the big red shirt freshman season.

Chris Otwell, War Room Report: You are one of the top WR in the 2007 NFL Draft Class. What do you think separates you from other WR in this class?

Sidney Rice: My ability to make plays on the ball the way I can position my body, and also my hands.

Chris Otwell, War Room Report: If you had to compare your game to any WR in the NFL, who would that player, be?

Sidney Rice: I would say Larry Fitzgerald.

Not a bad comparison if you are talking about similiar height, speed, hands, & ball skills. Fitzgerald is a lot thicker but Rice is only 21 so maybe he can fill out.

I was also pleased (...not shocked) to hear that Rice was the South Carolina B-Ball Player of the Year his senior season of HS.

This was part of something that really impressed me about Rice in the run up to last year's draft. His athleticism allows him to succeed in a sport like basketball, but just about anyone close to him who was questioned talked about what a fierce competitor he is and how that was a big part of his success.

I was able to pick him up off the waiver wire for nothing after week 2 last year, pretty lucky. I was thinking of trying to sell but comments like above in bold "being a fierce competitor" this is what separates many players at this level. I may hang on for the ride and see if Minn. can get him some help.
