The Vikings activated wide receiver Sidney Rice, who has yet to play this season after having hip surgery this summer, from the physically unable to perform list on Saturday. Rice was a big factor in the team’s — and Brett Favre’s — success in 2009, and the team has sorely missed his big-play ability.
Vikings coach Brad Childress said Friday that if Rice was not activated from PUP for Sunday's game against Green Bay, he would likely be placed on injured reserve and miss the rest of the season. Rice said Friday he didn’t expect to play full-time in his first action back.
Rice is in the last season of a four-year contract he received after being drafted in the second round in 2007. He racked up 1,312 receiving yards and eight touchdowns last season and was named to the Pro Bowl.
There was speculation that Rice was taking his time in coming back from his injury because of his potential to sign a new contract next season, a charge Rice has denied.
“I don't think I can go the whole game, but I'm going to play as much as I can,” Rice told ESPN regarding Sunday’s game.
