EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS FREE AGENT (ERFA): A player whose contract has expired and has three or fewer tenured years in the league. His original team must make a contract offer by the league imposed deadline or the player becomes an unrestricted free agent. No compensation is awarded for losing EFAs

why is Seneca Wallace significant? I don't ask to nitpick I figure you must like the guy to add him to the list so....curious

Wayne's gonna have to learn the FA game. That FA WR list isn't so great. If the market's bearing little he's gonna have to resign for a year and do it again when more WRs will drive up the $.

Whoa...Are you saying he should wait until there's *more* competition to enter the FA market? When there's better receivers?

That's wrong. If Wayne is the best WR out there, his value is inflated. Simple supply and demand. The same amount of dollars is there, but he is the best receiver. That, versus next year, where he could be the 10th best receiver, with the same amount of money out there.

He's going to get more money if he's the best receiver. Simple economics will tell you that. Less supply with constant demand increases the price.

not always. The problem with that theory is that assumes an unlimited amount of funds to purchase and with a cap we know that's not true. NFL market is far from perfect or predictable.

IIRC Ron Stone got one of the biggest G contracts ever like 5 years ago. You'd think it would go up over time. How come Moss or Brady aren't paid ridiculous sums like jordan or shaq- in NBA and countless MLB players? There's limits and those change year to year. It's funky.

I'm saying he'll put his toe in the water. If someone offers him big $ he'll grab it but otherwise he MAY be better served to wait a year. For example, the top paid FA RB wasn't high(relative) this year but if Edge+SA are UFA and not franchised they will each get a truckload. If Shaun gets 7 mil per year, Edge will want 7 too.

No, the theory of supply and demand does not assume unlimited money. It assumes limited money.

Let's say you had 100 dollars to buy steak for your party. You need steak, because...hey, it's a steak party.

Now, in the first scenario, all the butcher has (your only option) is cheap sirloin, and a little bit of okay sirloin.

Since you have 100 dollars to spend only on steak, you'd pay a lot for that okay sirloin, right? Probably much more than it would be worth in other situations...and if you're buying one steak, you'd probably spend 100 dollars on it.

Okay, now assume the same butcher has the okay sirloin, but this time also has fantastic cuts of tenderloin, filet mignon, and the best T-bone you've ever seen.

With that same 100 dollars, would you pay 100 dollars for the okay sirloin now?

I was replying to you and what you stated in theory. You're making it appear quite simple and it's not. Possibly, probably a poorly worded reply. Another attempt:A franchise RB is(or was til last few years...another debate) rare. For example Curtis is possibly the leading rusher in both the Pats and Jets history. The record of those teams when they had a stellar back is pretty sweet. The Giants have been around what 80 years? Amani Toomer may be the first 1000 yard WR in their history. He may even have the most receptions in Giants history. They're "always" contenders in the NFC East, maybe they think it's because they finally have a WR(hang on a sec) Brett Favre, Tom Brady and countless other HOF caliber QBs have made their teams always fun (if not successful) in this entertainment industry.

Some counter points-

Pats-Parcells, HOF coach, one of the best TEs ever in Coates IMO, BB as DC....

Jets-Parcells, a D that adored BB and his theories/tactics, statistically one of the best lines ever for a season there, Mawae.....

G-men-Strahan a HOF Defensive End IMO, Tiki

Now what do those teams truly value most? Is it WR, DE, or RB for the Giants? They'll pay most for what they covet right? How do you determine which position that is?

The market doesn't just involve the FA but also the draft.

The resources aren't only spent on FA but the draft and re-signing their own. One way to acquire funds is to possibly restructure some deals or trade away "dead weight"

Another way to limit fund is to trade a player near the beginning of his contract while he still has a bonus "eating" the cap.

Minnesota's owner, McCombs, and others have been accused of being cheap. If true, the cap doesn't matter because they're not spending that much.

It's not as simple as sirloin, t-bones, rump roasts, and ground beef. IMO The first step is to determine what teams actually view as sirloin. If Wayne isn't viewed as sirloin he will have to wait a year or his agent will attempt to "sell him" at way above market value.

This is a fair argument. Obviously, I still don't agree, but I'm going to drop it, because I have nothing else of substance to say. We've hijacked this thread enough. :)

fair enough. Yeah sorry for the hijack guys.If I may "say" one more thing: I believe you feeling one way, me feeling another about this is very much like NFL GMs/owners do and that's why it's confusing. It'd certainly be easier if there was a definitive pay rate/scale like rookies have.

Interesting - how about the OL and D players?Surprising that the QB and RB crop is so much stronger than the WR one.

Think Pittsburgh will re-sign Randle-El???? I dont think they will... he isnt deserving of a big contract but I think some other team will offer more than Pitt will be willing to offer.

Shaun Aexander AND Maurice Morris are BOTH free agents? Wow. I doubt they bth get signed. I think if the Seahawks sign Alexander, Morris will leave to try find a better gig and more money. From the limited amount of what I've seen, I think he could be a starter and have an impact. I might have to try to pick him up in my keeper league "just in case".

I hope they don't re-sign him. They need a better compliment to Ward who can stretch the field. Guys like Burress are hard to replace, no matter how many people didn't think so.

So, what do people think of Davenport? Can he be the starter in Green Bay or elsewhere next year?

Ah isn't Wayne like the 10th best receiver TODAY???? I'd think he'll make more money this off-season since it's a bad year for college WR's (unless some pretty good Jr's come out). There are a lot of teams who could use a Wayne but why would I as an NFL owner only want to sign him for one year?As for Davenport, I think he'll get minor offers away from Green Bay. He is snake-bitten with these injuries. RB's have to be healthy enough (??) to play hurt so I would think Green leaves the Pack, Davenport get's a modest raise and stays, and the Pack draft a young stud RB on Day 1 in April.

This seems like it should be a part of this thread.Free Agent Terms & DefinitionsThere are five types of free agents, with each type having different abilities when it comes to being able to move around the league. Those five types are as follows:» Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA) - Players with four years or more of NFL experience who can sign with their own team or any other team in the NFL. If they leave their previous team the team that signs them can do so without having to award the previous team compensation. » Restricted Free Agents (RFA) - Players with three years of NFL experience. Like an unrestricted free agent they are free to negotiate with any team however the current team has the right to match any offer and if they do so they retain the rights to the player. Failure to meet the offer means the player is awarded to the new team but the new team must give the old team compensation in the form of draft picks.» Exclusive-Rights Free Agents (ERFA) - Players with two or fewer years of experience who have no outside negotiating power. Their rights belong to their previous club provided they are made a minimum qualifying offer. » Franchise Free Agents (FFA) - Unrestricted free agents who have been designated as the "Franchise" player. Current team has the right to match any offer. If they refuse they are given compensation by the new team the player has signed to play for.» Transitional Free Agents (TFA) - Players who can negotiate with any club but current team retains matching rights.NFL FREE AGENCY QUESTIONS & ANSWERSQ - What are the categories of free agency?A - Players are either "restricted" or "unrestricted" free agents. Within the categories are also "transition" and "franchise" players.Q - What is the time period for free agency signings this year?A - For restricted free agents, from March 3 to April 16; for unrestricted free agents and transition players, from March 3 to July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later); and for franchise players, from March 3 through the 10th week of the season (November 9).Q - What is the difference between a restricted free agent and an unrestricted free agent?A - Players become restricted free agents when they complete three accrued seasons and their contract expires. Unrestricted free agents have completed four or more accrued seasons with an expired contract.Q - What constitutes an "accrued season?"A - Six or more regular-season games on a club's active/inactive, reserved-injured or "physically unable to perform" lists.Q - Other than accrued seasons, what determines a restricted free agent? A - He has received a "qualifying" offer (a salary level predetermined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players) from his old club. He can negotiate with any club through April 16. If the restricted free agent accepts an offer sheet from a new club, his old club can match the offer and retain him because it has the "right of first refusal." If the old club does not match the offer, it can possibly receive draft-choice compensation depending on the amount of its qualifying offer. If an offer sheet is not executed, the player's rights revert to his old club on April 16. Q - What determines an unrestricted free agent?A - A player with four or more accrued seasons whose contract has expired. He is free to sign with any club, with no compensation owed to his old club, through July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later). On July 23, his rights revert to his old club if it made a "tender" offer (110 percent of last year's salary) to him by June 1. His old club then has until the 10th week of the season (November 9) to sign him. If he does not sign by November 9, he must sit out the season. If no tender is offered by June 1, the player can be signed by any club at any time throughout the season. Q - What determines a transition player?A - His club must offer a minimum of the average of the top 10 salaries of last season at the player's position or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation.Q - What determines a franchise player?A - A club can designate one franchise player (or one transition player) in any given year. The salary level offer by a player's old club determines what type of franchise player he is. An "exclusive" franchise player -- not free to sign with another club -- is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of April 16, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. If the player is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries of last season at his position, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, he becomes a "non-exclusive" franchise player and can negotiate with other clubs. His old club can match a new club's offer, or receive two first-round draft choices if it decides not to match. Q - Can a club decide to withdraw its franchise or transition designations on a player? If so, can it then use them on other players? A - A club can withdraw its franchise or transition designations and the player then automatically becomes an unrestricted free agent either immediately or when his contract expires. The club cannot name a new transition player (two allowed in 1993, one in 1994 and one in the final year of the CBA). It can name a new franchise player the next year. A club can, though, designate a transition player in lieu of a franchise player at any time. Q - What determines each team's salary cap? Is it always in effect?A - The salary cap is the maximum each club may spend on player salaries in a capped year. For 2004, that amounts to 64.75 percent of leaguewide "Defined Gross Revenues" (divided by 32 teams), made up of preseason, regular-season and postseason gate receipts and radio and television rights. The cap is in effect 365 days a year. From March 3 to the day before the season begins, a club's top 51 salaried players count towards the cap, plus pro-rated signing bonuses, incentives, etc., but not base salaries of other players on the roster up to 80. Thereafter, all salaries on a club's roster count towards the cap. The maximum salary cap for 2004 is $80,582,000 per club. The minimum club salary is $67,337,000. Player benefits are $12,865,000 per club above the salary cap number.

Excellent info. Does anyone else besides me want to see Kitna in Baltimore next year?
I agree with this. In fact, I mentioned it in a thread a while ago. Kitna will want to go to a place where he can start again. I think he'd be a great fit in Baltimore. Mason's and Heap's value go up if he does.

For all intents and purposes, Owens may as well be on this list. The Eagles won't keep him and certainly no one else will want to trade for him given that he is due a $5 million bonus straight out of the gate.

Cool thread. I feel sorry for Antonio Bryant. He's one guy I thought would have a better season than he's having and it's a contract year. ooops.

Todd Peterson was solid, but the Falcons are going to open the competition in training camp. Peterson wants to be back.

Ryan Longwell’s run as the most prolific place-kicker in Green Bay history may have ended with the Packers’ New Year’s Day victory over Seattle. Longwell, 31, is a free agent after spending his entire nine-year NFL career in Green Bay. While the Bend native says the Packers are his first choice, a chance to kick in a warmer climate could be enough to lure him away from the frozen tundra at Lambeau Field. “I’d love to be back,” says Longwell, who this season made 20 of 27 field goals, including 4 of 5 from 50 yards or more. “I passed 1,000 career points this year, and I would love to get to 2,000 in Green Bay. But they have to want me back, and I haven’t gotten a call from them yet. I took in the sights and sounds a little more against Seattle, just in case it was my last game at Lambeau.”

Longwell, who made $7.5 million over the last five seasons with Green Bay, will draw high interest from such teams as Dallas, Tennessee, Atlanta and Tampa Bay. The latter is the destination of former Green Bay teammate and best friend Josh Bidwell, who made it to the Pro Bowl for the first time this year in his second season with the Buccaneers. “Ryan and I talk on the phone almost every day,” says Bidwell, a Douglas native who winters in Eugene. “We would love to play together. Rumors are rumors, and I don’t want to say anything about that. But it would be a dream to play with my best friend again. Ryan is an elite kicker, and he will get a lot of interest. You see what a warm environment did for me.”

Longwell, his wife, Sarah, and their two young children are at their winter home in Orlando, Fla. — they retain a condo in Bend for their visits to see relatives three to four times a year — waiting to see what happens. “We’re excited about the next chapter, wherever that may take us,” Longwell says. “A lot of teams are looking for an experienced kicker.”

Joe Nedney has to be at the top of that free agent priority list as he was very strong for the 49ers this season. It was he who was the only point getter in the 49ers 15-10 win over the first place Tampa Bay Buccaneers back on October 30th, as he booted five field goals. Nedney was 26 of 28 on field goals this season and has to be brought back into the 49ers camp.

"We would like to lock up some of these guys long term -- all of them if we can,'' Gruden said. That lot would include nose tackle Chris Hovan, placekicker Matt Bryant and perhaps offensive tackle Kenyatta Walker, among others. All three are coming off solid years -- in Hovan's case, a great one -- and will draw interest if they hit the market.

Wayne's gonna have to learn the FA game. That FA WR list isn't so great. If the market's bearing little he's gonna have to resign for a year and do it again when more WRs will drive up the $.
I traded for Wayne this past season so I'm definitely interested in what happens with him. I think the best situation would be to stay in Indy and take over as Manning's main target as Harrison continues to age.But if he were to go somewhere else, what would be good fits? I fear he may go somewhere that will kill his production like Peerless Price did when he went to Atlanta.

Do the Colts want Edge back bad enough to pay the big bucks? Does Edge want to stay in Indy bad enough to not hold them hostage?

What about OLB Will Witherspoon? With this years strong OLB draft class, you may think he is expendable to most teams but it only drives down his $$ value. He, IMHO, is an excellent pickup for a team who missed out of the OLB firesale and is a damn good spot start that may be had for cheap. Especially for teams that need an immediate plugin.

Last I heard the Colts want to resign both of them.
