SEATTLE -- Pitcher Carlos Silva and the Seattle Mariners finalized a $48 million, four-year contract Thursday. The 28-year-old right-hander was 13-14 last season for the Minnesota Twins with a 4.19 ERA -- better than every Mariners starter other than hard-throwing Felix Hernandez.Seattle likes that Silva pitches deep into games, generally stays low in the strike zone with a sharp sinker and walked just 36 batters in 202 innings last season. He joins a Seattle rotation that includes Hernandez, Miguel Batista and Jarrod Washburn."We feel that signing Carlos addresses one of our main needs, adding a quality arm to the starting rotation," general manager Bill Bavasi said. "Our goal heading into the offseason was to identify the best available pitcher on the free agent market and we feel we got the best one."

10 mill a year by the Mariners. Thoughts?
He's pretty damn average...Had a good year 3 years ago (with a ridiculous 9 walks), had al awful year two years ago, had an average year last year...He'll give you close to 200 innings, and the move from the Metrodome to Safeco will probably help his WHIP (only a career 1.36 despite his very good walk rates)...10 per sure seems like it's too much money for that type of production, but in this weak FA pitching market I suppose it's not awful...Carlos Silva is the definition of MEH

Good thing the Mariners didn't overpay for Gil Meche last year
Yeah, I thnk that is a very good point. I've always liked Meche and the Tigers almost had him two years ago, but Meche>>Silva. No doubt about it.

######ed money. If I was a mediocre pitcher in the 80's or 90's say Gil Heredia - the most statistically comparable pitcher to Silva and made 7M for my entire career, I would be pissed. The Mariners signed a friend of mine in the early 90's for about $4,000,000 per year which was also ######ed money at the time. It was a signing I am confident they regret, just as they will regret this one.

After Jason Marquis parlayed a 6.02 ERA in 2006 into a multiyear contract, nothing surprises me anymore about baseball free agent salaries.

Mariners look like idiots for not giving that money to Meche but in this day and age I cant criticize the move that much for a guy who will give them 200 solid innings every year. I wont say its a good signing but its not a horrible signing either.

Considering MLB doesn't exactly have a cap... who gives a #### if they overpaid? Fact is they signed the best pitcher available and it will help their ball club.

They just gave $48 million to a guy who two seasons ago went in the tank because he wants the fans to like him. He took himself out of a start in Tampa Bay in which he was having one of his best starts of the season, because of an upset stomach  , and basically quit on his team. This guy is a head case. This will not end well for the Mariners.

I think Silva will do ok in Seattle. He has solid control, is a ground ball pitcher, and will eat up innings. The fact the defense in Seattle is better than what he had in Minnesota, plus he will be playing on a grass field instead of turf, will only help him and his sinker ball.

The price tag is just the going rate now and I think he will return some value for the M's.
