Simms & Rattay sent home from NE practice facility (1 Viewer)

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Tim Rattay and Chris Simms were sent back to the airport after arriving at the Patriots' facility Monday.GM Scott Pioli reportedly told the free agents that "sorry, circumstances have changed," and they were no longer wanted. Randy Moss is allegedly pushing for New England to sign old friend Daunte Culpepper, who retired last week. Another option would be to sign Matt Gutierrez off the practice squad.

I think Cassell and O'Connell are better or at least more interesting than those two.

I haven't thought Simms had his father's mental toughness and I don't imagine BB liking him as his QB. Rattay always makes enough mistakes in a couple games to get benched.

Oh boy, and the sour Randy won't be far off now.

I've always wondered just how long he would stay "happy" in N.E. Much like Owens in Dallas, as long as he has a QB that throws to him often and has a big arm, Randy is dandy....

But if N.E. goes with Cassell/Guitierez, I don't think it will be more than a few weeks before we see the Randy Moss of old. (Oakland days that is).

Get ya roll on Pep! :goodposting:

I doubt you will see Oakland randy out there... Oakland was not just a losing team - they were a disaster. From ownership on down. Terrible owner, terrible coaching, terrible players, terrible team.NE has a ton of pride and tradition, and I believe Moss will step up to do w hat he can to help hold things together. He knows that this is not a lost situation... even IF it becomes a lost year. He will have Brady next year and a reason to stay motivated.

I heard this on ESPN earlier today. The whole Culpepper part seemed like pure speculation on Mort's part. I don't think there was anything concrete to back up the claim. At least that is how I perceived it when I heard him talking.

C-pep doesn't fit with New England, they don't turn the ball over, why would they want someone who has at least two turnovers a game.

We'll see I guess

I don't buy this. Never...I mean NEVER, has Mort gone out on a limb, embellished, exaggerated, pontificated or even predicted.

Tradition? Really? They've been a great team for 8 years. Does that qualify as tradition?

Is he even on the Pats' practice squad? As far as I know, he is not and he played fairly well in pre-season. There are only 7 practice squad players listed at the bottom of the roster page. Here ->http://www.patriots.com/team/index.cfm?ac=...s&Print=yesEdited for horrible grammar.

Because...with Moss he was one of the best quarterbacks in the league, from a fantasy perspective and a real life perspective. His individual game may not have been elite, but he showed he could succeed with Moss. They had one of the best offenses in the league in Minnesota, with no running game, and no defense. Which, they'll have both of in New England...I'm all about this.

lol, Randy already started...He calls the hit dirty, when he is 30 yards downfield making the catch. Some vantage point he had I'm sure of that view. You still have a solid team, but don't for a minute think that Randy is going to be a team leader, thats just comical :lmao:ETA: Kevin, you looked good in your first game back last night too. Congrats on the healthy return.

If we ignore the pure speculation part that the Randy moss is allegedly pushing for Culpepper, I don't really understand Simms and Rattay being sent home before they even leave the airport.

I assume that if they came out their agents had contact with the team and there was some interest or else they wouldn't have come. If they were in town, what changed so much that it wasn't even worth working them out? I just don't understand this.

Edit to add: It only makes sense to me to send them home if NE just traded for a QB. If so, that was awfully quick and awfully quick to give up on Cassell.

randy made that observation after watching the tape -- which would be the same vantage point that you, and all the other monday morning qb's, get to fill up this board w/your opinions.just focus on trying to climb over the bills for a wildcard.....

 thanks for the lesson coach, without an unbiased opinion such as yours all us MMQB's would be looking for a team that needs a starter.

The team really pulled together last year around the whole 'issue-that-shall-not-be-named' and held together as a TEAM.This injury is the sort of thing that will probably do the same for them - now can Cassel carry the load, I dunno. But I think Randy bought in to the Pats and I feel like we really won't see him fall apart like in Oaktown.

Perhaps they were sent home from the airport before even being given a chance because one or both of thier agents "leaked" the info that they were headed to NE before the "official" word on the Brady injury was released.

Call me a skeptic on Randy, but the only thing I feel he "bought into" was winning a SuperBowl. Last year left a bad taste in his mouth, and now he loses probably the most complete Pocket QB in the league (even if switz disagrees). I just can't see him staying happy as some to think, and he may try and get through the year with hopes of next year and a return to glory. But knee injuries are pretty damn unpredictable thing to come back from...example CULPEPPER!!!

It is interesting but I don't think it means they gave up on Cassell, maybe they traded for a backup QB? Or maybe they decided on Giuterriz(sp?) But I do wonder, don't they need another QB?

I figured it left a bad taste in everyone's mouth but did Randy do something to make it seem like he was going to implode? I mean, except allegedly push for CPep to get signed which could be a sign of insanity depending upon who you believe. :goodposting:

All that you said is possible, even likely, what just seems strange to me is to fly them in and not even have them work out. What's the harm in looking especially given that they were already in town? If nothing else, suppose that Cassell gets hurt. Why not have recent notes on these guys. Just sounds odd.

I doubt they're giving up on Cassel, they just don't have anyone with real NFL experience on the team anymore. They can't go in with Cassel as #1 and ? as #2. They need to get a veteran QB in there, Cassel will be the man regardless

That's exactly my point and my question. Why send home these two guys with NFL experience without even a look when you had them fly into town? I'm sure there's a good explanation, but given the information we have now, I don't get it.

The famous Pittsburgh Steelers Dynasty also lasted for 8 years. Nice avatar BTW. ;)

Did Matt Gutierrez look good in preseason?
Yes, he clearly outplayed Cassel in preseason and there were some (at least at Rotoworld) who were surprised that he wasn't kept and Cassel cut instead.
Did Matt Gutierrez look good in preseason?
Yes, he did. He looked better than Cassell and there was even media speculation that he could be kept over Cassell.
You don't say? Seriously though, the Rattay and Simms flirtations were clearly a ploy to motivate Tatvm Bell. Bell was just spotted at the Patriots practice facility with an armful of luggage.Looks like the Pats found their man.

Gutierrez = Cassell of year's past

I am willing to give Cassell the benefit of the doubt for this pre-season as he was just as impressive if not more so than Gutierrez in all prior pre-seasons. I think the coaching staff agreed as well. I was listening to WEEI this morning and they actually asked Cassell this question. They asked him if he was nervous that Gutierrez would steal his spot on the roster. The thing that we as spectators sometimes miss is that these guys go into a room with their coaches and analyze every last move they made in the game. They obviously saw enough good in Cassell's performances to annoint him the back up again. Chalk me up as one that will not be surprised to see Cassell do very well in runnning this offense, because of his experience with the system and having the luxury of watching Brady for a few years.

Since he's the QB for all of 2008 probably, as a public service I thought I'd mention that his name is spelled Cassel, not Cassell. It's been posted incorrectly more often than not in this thread.
