In the parts of 2 years that Simms has played, has anyone seen anything to indicate that teams don't respect him and are going to crowd the line of scrimmage until he is able to beat them?
I've seen nothing. And definitely nothing to make me think he is worth a $5M base for next year. That is not compete for a job money, that is starter money.
He looked fine in 2005 taking the Bucs into the playoffs. Not sure what was wrong with him at the start of this year, but as we've seen from the Bucs, it certainly wasnt just Simms.

Is "fine" a synonym for "competent"? Because that's all he was in 2005. He had a decent QB rating but only threw for 185 yards and .9 TDs per game.Project his 2005 stats (as a starter) through 16 games and you get:3145 yards, 16 TDs, 11 INTs.Which makes him a poor man's Mark Brunell.
This signing is a marriage of convienance, no more.
Gruden's been looking for the next Rich Gannon (a QB with mobility and accuracy) and was hoping against hope that Gradkowski was that guy, but he played his way to the bench primarily due to his lack of arm strength. Simms has the arm strength and accuracy, but lacks the mobility, so Gruden chose the lesser of two evils.
The fact is, unless Gruden can get that offensive line together he's done after 2007 anyway.
I don't know if I'd be excited too much about this if I were a Bucs fan. They would have been better off had they retained Griese. How much coin is this kid going to make for being nothing more than mediocre so far in his NFL career?
You may be right about Griese. The thing about Simms is, he has some skills to work with: superior arm strength, decent accuracy, and leadership and moxie skills. He just lacks mobility. It's not unlike building an offense around Drew Bledsoe (before Bledsoe lost his nerve). If you can protect him, he can be very, very good because he'll make you defend the entire field. If you can't keep him upright, the offense will struggle.
He was terrible the first two games, played well against the Panthers before he got hurt, but is without a doubt the best option for 2007. They couldn't go into the season without him.
