Simms to Denver? (1 Viewer)

Josh McDaniels has claimed that Denver quarterback Jay Cutler isn't on the trading block. But if the Broncos' first-year head coach changes his mind, McDaniels could have another viable option as Cutler's replacement.

Tennessee quarterback Chris Simms is close to finalizing a free-agent contract with the Broncos, a source told FOXSports.com.

Simms, 28, spent last season with the Titans after being cut by Tampa Bay. The release ended a bumpy five-year Buccaneers run. Simms landed in then-coach Jon Gruden's doghouse after being the team's starter for 14 games in 2005 and 2006.

Simms appeared in only one game last season while mired behind Kerry Collins and Vince Young on the Titans bench. With Tennessee re-signing Collins, Simms' best chance for playing time in 2009 was with another team. Patrick Ramsey, who was Denver's backup quarterback the past two seasons, is expected to sign elsewhere as a free agent.

Cutler's future with the Broncos is in question after McDaniels reportedly tried trading him to Tampa Bay as part of a three-way deal that would have netted New England quarterback Matt Cassel. New England instead sent Cassel to Kansas City, leaving McDaniels to deal with an irate Cutler once news of the aborted deal leaked.

:( at trying to sell this as a "viable option as Cutler's replacement".

They needed a backup, he needed a job.

Why is Denver spending so much time adding offensive scrubs as opposed to improving their D?
Excellent question.Denver needs to rebuild their D from the ground up.

They have made seven signings on defense. As far as signing scrubs on offense, the RBs who were in Denver last year may or may not be back so it's probably not a bad idea to add some competition. They added 1 WR who played in McD's system before and I think we can all agree that a backup QB is essential, so I know the easy thing is to kick the Broncos but most of the signings actually make sense.

They are trying to improve both sides of the ball, which any smart team would do.

He is a lot better than Ramsey, and is a decent #2 QB. In today's league with quality QBs being very limited I think the Broncos picked up a solid backup QB.
