Sinkhole in my yard (1 Viewer)

I get a call this afternoon from my father-in-law who has been building a play house in my side yard for my kids. He tells me he noticed the ground sinking a bit and has he investigated he uncovered basically a sink hole. He covered it up and I just took a look at it. Basically a round hole the size of a basketball that goes down 16-24 inches but then there is further gaps in the ground that shoot off in different directions. Definitely a bit scary looking down there as I'm starting to question how stable this side lawn might be. My FIL has been driving his truck over there so thinking perhaps that is why it is showing up right now.

My plan is to fill it up with sand, rocks and soil but curious if anyone else has ever dealt with something similar.

Theirs were caused by some old cisterns that had been buried a long time ago and had rusted away so it was just a matter of filling in with gravel, topsoil and reseeding. If yours is caused by water moving through the soil, it could reappear if the water continues to wash out the fines.

Theirs were caused by some old cisterns that had been buried a long time ago and had rusted away so it was just a matter of filling in with gravel, topsoil and reseeding. If yours is caused by water moving through the soil, it could reappear if the water continues to wash out the fines.

Yeah, this is what I'm talking about. My grandmother owned a house that was built in the 1940s. It originally had a cistern that was basically a big wooden box buried in the back yard. Sometime in the 1960s the house was connected to the city sewer. One year after, a big rain, a 5 x 5 section of the back yard started to cave in.

House is only 14 years olds so I don't think it would be a cistern. My lot is just over 5 acres with roughly 3/4 of an acre carved out as yard around the house. There is wetlands on the property in the front (I have a 100 yard driveway) and in the back of the property...not sure if that matters.

Someone buried a big wooden chest of 1804 silver dollars in mint condition. The chest finally rotted away.

Dumped 3 bags of dry concrete and then 3 bags if fine sand down the hole before topping it off with a wheel barrel of soil. Hopefully that does the trick.
