Kentucky snake handling preacher, reality TV star dead from snake bite

MIDDLESBORO, KY (WATE) - Jamie Coots, a preacher known for snake handling, as well as being the focus of a reality TV show, died Saturday after being bitten by a snake.

According to the Middlesboro Police Department, emergency crews responded to reports of a possible snakebite victim at a church on Evans Drive around 8:30 p.m., but say the victim had already left the scene by the time they arrived.

Police say they found Coots at his home with an apparent snakebite to his hand. Officials say EMS responders explained the dangers of not treating the wound, but that Coots still refused to be transferred.

Police and EMS returned to the scene an hour later to find Coots dead.

Coots was the pastor of Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name church in Middlesboro. He is also the subject of the National Geographic Channel series "Snake Salvation".

Last February 6 News brought you the story of Coots' court date on the charges of being pulled over in Knoxville for the unlawful possession of poisonous snakes.

Coots is commonly recognized as the mentor of Andrew Hamblin. Both are co-stars of the National Geographic Channel's reality TV series, "Snake Salvation."

Probably the least amount of sympathy I've ever had for a death. Guess Jesus was sleeping on the job when he was supposed to be protecting him from that serpent.

After watching on the show how those bozos treated their snakes, I have difficulty mustering up much sympathy.

So the moron could be alive if he just let the EMTs help him?
The whole idea behind snake handling is it is a test of faith:

And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mark 16:17-18)
So to allow EMTs to help him would have been admitting that Jesus wasn't going to save him. And would have been a show of his own lack of faith.

His congregation must be rattled by this news.
:slowclap:

I wonder what actually happens with the congregation. Does another ignoramus step up to lead them? Do many lose their faith based on Jesus's indifference to their leader's death by snake? It seems like this type of event really undermines the core tenets of their faith.

I would guess his congregation just assumes he was committing various and sundry heinous sins and needed killin'.

Well thank goodness that didn't happen. How embarrassing that would have been for him!

I find it odd that the story didn't say what type of snake.

Darwin Award candidate?
Rattlesnakes.

And his son is going to take over the congregation. That should go well.
Actually snake handling as part of a religious service is illegal there. I wonder if cops will get involved? I wonder if that law would stand up to constitutional challenge?
