Sneaky TE Play this week: Owen Daniels... (1 Viewer)

OK, OK...maybe it's not that sneaky. HOU is playing NO who has a notoriously poor pass defense. But specifically, NO has had difficulty limiting TE production even though they have played the following:

Dallas Clark

Alex Smith

Bo Scaife

Jeff King

Marcus Pollard

Martrez Milner

Vernon Davis

Marcedes Lewis

Randy McMichael

Now, I'm going to take away Clark's numbers because:

1) The Saints played them Game 1 so there was no 2007 film on them yet for coaches to dissect.

2) He's clearly the best TE of this group.

But all in all, this is a fairly non-descript group.

For the year (when not playing NO), they average:

21 receptions, 195 yards yards, 9.28 YPR, .6 TD's

However, against NO, they have combined for

25 receptions, 298 yards, 11.9 YPR, 3 TD's

In other words, their yardage production increases by more than 50% (52.8% to be exact) and their chances of scoring a TD increase five-fold.

Owen Daniels numbers for the year:

39 catches, 468 yards, 0 TD's

While alot of coverage is going to be given to Andre Johnson's return, I could see the Texans finding Daniels' all over the middle of the field as the Saints compensate for Johnson. Since they have trouble keeping marginal TE's from being effective Daniels could have a real solid day. He's probably not a TE1 on anyones roster, but this might not be a bad time to pull a switch.

I don't have Daniels, but this is some great analysis going forward for all TE's vs the Saints.

mmmm... I own Da Clark and Daniels... so I'm very torn. Now that Dallas is expected back; I'm actually thinking of BNing my #4 WR (Engram) and slipping in Daniels... I really like Daniels but he just doesn't get any endzone looks.

I just check points allowed by position in MFL.... in my PPR / 3 pt bonus for 5 recs and 75 yds / 10yds a pt... NOS was #26 for pts allowed; thats not a good match up.

That's odd. According to FBG's, New Orleans is one of the very best matchups for TE's.

When the TE's you play are in the category of Matrez Milner, Bo Scaife, Marcedes Lewis and Jeff King...of course the standing is going to look like bad match-up. The point is, the Saints have allowed bad TE's to actually perform quite capably. When they run up against a solid TE, which Daniels is (sans TD's)...it's an opportunity.

A Smith, TB: 2 catches, 45 yds

Scaife, Tenn: 3 catches, 26 yds, 1 TD

King, Car: 2 catches, 33 yds

Pollard, Sea: 2 catches, 25 yds

Milner/Blakley, Atl: 3 catches, 14 yds

V Davis, SF: 6 catches, 71 yds, 1 TD (score was 31-3 when Davis had 2 catches for 24 yds and the TD)

M Lewis/Wrighster, Jax: 5 catches, 57 yds

McMichael, StL: 4 catches, 41 yds, 1 TD (TD was on a halfback option pass by SJax)

Actually, the Saints aren't a GREAT maqchup.

Saints are 8th in TE receptions allowed: 28

17th in TE yardage allowed - 342 yds.

But they have only allowed two TE TD's all year so that's solid.

Middle of the road defense vs. TE's overall.

I've been starting Daniels over Shockey for most games the last 6 weeks. I don't think I'll do that this week with AJ back.

Isnt Schaub supposed to be back as well as AJ? The return of AJ is actually a good thing it means the Texans will be able to move the ball and have more scoring opportunities. If you remember back early in the season when Schaub and AJ were both playing the Texans had a decent offense.

And Daniels was 1/14 and 5/58. He's been down the last 3 weeks, but prior to that, his worst 2 in PPR were when AJ was playing.

you might be on to something here!last season, Tes vs. Saints were:Cooley 4-80, Winslow 8-63-1td, GB TEs David Martin and Franks combined for 9-62, Crumpler was 6-92 in 2 games, LJ Smith 4-48- 1td while Matt Schobel was 2-41 ( so thats 6-89-1 from the philly TE's in just the one reg season matchup, not counting the post season matchup) , Heap 3-47-1td, Heath Miller 3-30-1, Witten 4-30...This is a different Houston offense with Shaub in town, and with AJ back in the lineup.
