Nice call on Eric Metcalf circuitsEric Metcalf Jr shouldn't have his feelings hurt that the Saints drafted a RB. Completely different roles and I doubt he'll find a feature job anywhere.

The contract makes sense. Like any underpaid veteran free agent, Thomas gets rewarded for past performance by getting a big bonus and some gauranteed money this year. If Ingram takes over as starter, Thomas is unlikely to reach the bigger incentives in the later part of the contract. If they cut Thomas in 2012, they only lose 840,000. If they cut him in 2013, they dont lose anything. They only really have to pay Thomas starters money this year and its not like they knew Ingram would be sitting there at their draft position. Remember, the Saints had a young Ricky Williams and they drafted McCallister because he was a steal. Drafting Ingram is actually a considerable upgrade over Thomas. The only head scratcher is Bush who has had people scratching heads for years but I wont get into that here.'BigJim® said:Yeah, that extension was a real head scratcher for me, since Pierre was injured all last year, and seemed to be in Payton's dog house. This is the best post I have seen describing the saints RB situation in the aftermath of the draft. Payton/Loomis have made it clear that they want Bush to stay. No such statement has been made about Pierre or Ivory, however. Pierre's contract isn't bad at all and they can afford to keep him with Ingram for a time. I think they will use Pierre and Ingram similar to the way they used Pierre and Bell during the SB run. It's a formula proven successful for the Saints. At the end of the season then they will figure out what to do with Pierre. They'll cut Reggie. They'll put an offer on the table for him to re-sign. He'll be free to shop his services elsewhere. They are just done with overpaying for his services. If he can get a better deal elsewhere then they are not going to stand in his way.The contract makes sense. i think there may be a role in the future for ivory but not for some time. 1. he's coming off lisfranc surgery, which is no joke. it would be pretty remarkable for him to be ready and starting come week 1. prior to ingram, he was a prime candidate for PUP.Why would they suddenly completely bench Ivory when he was a beast last year? He averaged over 5 yards per carry had many long runs and was pretty unstoppable on short yardage, clearly most of you did not watch the Saints games last year. I think it will be a RBBC as usual and the top performer in camp will most likely carry the load or he plays the old "hot hand" card and mixes it up from week to week.
In case you didn't see this one:
So you want to see Ivory start as opposed to seeing the first round, Heisman trophy winning running back they gave up multiple picks for? You might be the ONLY one.Obviously at this point we are all just guessing, but I don't think any coach worth his salary plays a lesser guy because he was a higher pick. I am also basing this on Ivory being healthy at the start of the season which he may not be, although he had the lesser of the lisfranc injuries and my understanding at this point is he has started running. If I were a Saints fan I would want to see Ivory as the early down and short yardage/TD back as he was head and shoulders above everyone else on the team. Hopefully we will all get to see how it turns out when they are playing this year.
Are you kidding? Vereen with 3 other backs is in the best situation? Kendall Hunter, behind Frank Gore, is in the best situation?Yeah it would be nice if we could get back on track. It is worth noting that Bloom has his Post Draft rookie ranking up now. And to answer this question it would probably be Shane Vereen RB PATS or Kendall Hunter RB SF at this point.
A guy who is a proven beast over a guy who has done nothing? Yes please. So you want to see Ivory start as opposed to seeing the first round, Heisman trophy winning running back they gave up multiple picks for? Pierre was almost traded to the Pats last season. He is still very tradable once he proves he is healthy. Bush is gone IMO and it may be a while before Ivory is healthy enough to return. If Ingram puts on a RB clinic then it doesnt matter who is still on the team. He will be the man in New Orleans. To Moderated (the forum thread police) sorry but this is totally related to the OP's topic and why Ingram is landing in the best spot. Are there other RB's to discuss? yes but discussing the Saints situation is not off topic and has NOT ruined this thread as it all pertains to the future of the top running back in the 2011 draft.Yeah, that extension was a real head scratcher for me, since Pierre was injured all last year, and seemed to be in Payton's dog house.
