So....Curt Schilling thinks Clemens should return the Cy Young awards (1 Viewer)

On The Rocks

I am not a fan or a hater of Clemens, and I am a fan of Schilling.

...but I have to say what the heck is he thinking? I am not saying he is wrong in what he is saying, but why would an active player come out and put themself on a pedestal and say something like this about another active player?

What kind of backlash would happen if Schilling ever falls into a temptation of doing something that others percieve to be wrong?

Jeeze.....this is pretty stupid.

Schilling calls on Clemens to give up Cy Youngs if Rocket doesn't clear name

Schilling calls on Clemens to give up Cy Youngs if Rocket doesn't clear name

December 19, 2007

BOSTON (AP) -- Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling called on Roger Clemens to give up the four Cy Young Awards he's won since 1997 if he can't clear his name from allegations that he used steroids to prolong and enhance his career.

"If he doesn't do that then there aren't many options as a fan for me other than to believe his career 192 wins and three Cy Youngs he won prior to 1997 were the end," Schilling wrote Wednesday in his blog, 38pitches.com. "From that point on the numbers were attained through using (performance-enhancing drugs). Just like I stated about Jose (Canseco), if that is the case with Roger, the four Cy Youngs should go to the rightful winners, and the numbers should go away if he cannot refute the accusations."

Schilling noted in the 3,200-word posting that he was a fan of the seven-time Cy Young Award winner who owed much of his success to a stern talking-to he received from Clemens when Schilling was a young pitching prospect.

"His `undressing' of me and lecture were a major turning point," Schilling said. "I've always respected his career accomplishments and regarded him as the greatest pitcher to ever play the game."

But, having called on Canseco to give up his 1988 AL MVP award, and noting also the unrefuted evidence against Barry Bonds, Schilling acknowledged he could not avoid questioning Clemens' accomplishments as well.

"Can you separate what Barry is accused of from what Roger is accused of?" Schilling said. "If ... both of these men end up being caught, what does that say about this game, us as athletes and the future of the sport and our place in it? The greatest pitcher and greatest hitter of all time are currently both being implicated, one is being prosecuted, for events surrounding and involving the use of performance enhancing drugs. That (stinks). ... The sport needs fixing."

Clemens was the biggest name in the report by former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell that detailed the widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. Clemens has denied using performance-enhancing substances.

The Rocket's last four Cy Young Awards came in 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2004. Many of the allegations against Clemens in the Mitchell Report came from former trainer Brian McNamee, though none pertain to 1997 or 2004. Mitchell wrote McNamee said he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998 while with the Toronto Blue Jays, and steroids and human growth hormone in 2000 and 2001, while with the New York Yankees.

Schilling commended those who've apologized for using performance-enhancing drugs, and called on everyone accused to prove their innocence or apologize for their mistakes.

"The world is full of good to great people that have made mistakes of this magnitude or worse," Schilling wrote. "These guys made mistakes, and I do mean mistakes. They didn't accidentally do this, this was a conscious decision with far reaching implications and they should be held accountable."

While calling Canseco's "entire career, all of it, is a sham" and saying "he was never in his life a major league player," Schilling also acknowledged that many of Canseco's claims about other steroid users have been corroborated.

"He has broken the flood gates on a topic that went unspoken on for far too long," Schilling said.

The runners-up in Clemens' last four Cy Young-winning years were Randy Johnson (1997 and 2004), Pedro Martinez (1998) and Mark Mulder (2001).

Schilling was among those who testified in March 2005 to a U.S. House committee investigating steroids, along with Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro. The same committee has scheduled hearings for Jan. 15.

Clemens has not been asked to attend, though it's possible that the committee could decide to ask Clemens or other players to appear that day -- or at a future hearing, if there is one.

I'd love to see roid raged Roger put a serious beatdown on that fatass. He's ESPN-like annoying these days.
It's the sense of entitlement the Sawx fans have given him. They hang on his every word. "That Schill is wicked smaht. "
Not even close. Nearly every Sox fan I know thinks the guy is a complete blow-hard. The hate his wife too. However, when one performs like he has in the playoffs, they tend to just roll their eyes and let the guy do what he wants.

How come you weren't outraged when Schilling made stupid comments about Bonds?

This is par for the course with Schilling. At least he is consistent though.

Does Schilling still think that people outside of the Boston area give a crap what he thinks or says? He needs to ####.

Not true. I dont know a single fan, including Sox fans, who like this guy.

I would agree with Schill, but we need an endgame to this.

The number two guy(who would presumably inhereit the award) should also be subject to scrunity.

And it may be more troube than its worth given the structure of bonus clauses. Do you give the 1998 Cy runner up the bonus in his contract 10 years later if you pull Clemens award?

I can't say I disagree with the spirit of things though, but maybe Curt should look at his 2001 World Series ring and wonder if the juice didn't help Luis Gonzalez flick that ball over the infield. It really gets complicated to go down these roads, and it probably won't happen, but imagine the respect Clemens could endear for giving up the hardware. I would think he'd buy instant forgiveness.

Huge Sox fan here and you couldn't be more wrong about this one. This guy is a #####-bag who loves to hear his own voice. Can't argue about him stepping up in big games but can't stand all of the other stuff about him. He's definately not "wicked pissa"

I hope you know that you are dead wrong about this.I can't stand the guy, I know many others that feel the same about him.Schilling is now doing endorsement commercials for John McCain in the Boston area, yeah I am hanging on Schill's every word for sure.

You're kidding right? This is like saying Yankees fans think Kevin Brown was even tempered. I don't think you'll find a single reasonable sox fan who thinks Curt is much more than a blowhard when it comes to the media.

He might want to return his '93 NLCS MVP then since at least half of the Phils were on roids for that season.

Wow, talk about a stretch here. Nice one.
Umm.. how so? Without Dykstra, Daulton, Hollins, Jackson, Chamberlin, etc.. loading up on the roids that year they come nowhere near the playoffs. Therefore if the Phillies don't make the playoffs then Curt doesn't win the award. Stretch? I don't think so.Unless of course you don't think anyone on that team used anything then I'd have to roll my eyes at you.

Someone wrote a letter to the editor at the L.A. Times that was printed in the Sports section in the last day or two. It read, "Hey Curt, put a bloody sock in it." :lmao:

I thought we'd already established that Schilling was an idiot.
He is an idiot. he was the same one spouting off that you can't trust the owners to give the players drug tests because they can't be trusted. he continued that they should have an independent group do the testing and that was the only way...When someone told him that the players union chose what independent company had been doing the testing you didn't hear form him for awhile :ptts: I know this may sound weak, but I know some other things about the person Schilling is...and he is an #####.

Is Schilling an idiot because he has an opinion, speaks his opinion, or just because you disagree with his opinion?

I don't understand all the hate because he thinks if Clemens is guilty he should return his CY Young Awards.

He's an idiot because he lacks the judgment to say to himself, "You know...I have some thoughts on this, but I'm going to keep my mouth shut for a while and see how this plays out."

 Every other pitcher in baseball exhibited the judgement not to run their mouth.

I know a lot of people that run their mouth. I don't think they are idiots for it. I just think its one of those things that make people unique. I guess I don't mind people running their mouth because I can take things with a grain of salt. He's telling a story, if you like it or not, I wouldn't want him censored.
